Abstract

A method of adapting a heating appliance for fitting to a combustible wall structure comprises removing combustible material from the wall structure in a selected region beyond that concealed by the casing 5, 6 of the application and covering the region with a cover member 8 forming an extension of the casing. The member 8 may be separate from, integrally formed with, or detachably mounted on the casing. <IMAGE>

Description

Heating Appliances This invention relates to heating appliances.
Regulations relating to the fitting of gas fired heating appliances in locations adjacent combustible walls specify maximum wall temperatures to be attained in the area behind and immediately around the appliance.
Where such maximum temperatures are exceeded combustible materials, such as wallpaper, must be removed from the wall to reduce the risk of discolouration. This presents problems in domestic dwellings where removal of wallpaper around the appliance would be aesthetically unacceptable. It is an object of the present invention to obviate or mitigate this difficulty.
According to its wider aspects the invention provides a method of adapting a heating appliance for fitting to a combustible wall structure, comprising removing combustible material from the wall structure in a selected region or regions thereof beyond those concealed by the casing of the appliance and covering said region or regions with a cover member forming an extension of said casing.
Preferably said region or regions are selected by reference to the wall temperature attained when the appliance is. in use, combustible material being removed' from regions where the wall temperature exceeds a predetermined maximum.
The invention also provides a cover member for use in association with a space heating appliance, the member being adapted to overlie an adjacent wall surface and form an extension of the casing of the appliance.
Preferably the cover member is provided with attachment means to enable it to be mounted on said wall surface or on said casing.
The invention also provides a space heating appliance having an outer casing enclosing a heating unit and a cover member forming an extension of the casing and overlying an adjacent region of a wall structure to which the appliance is fitted.
The cover member may be detachably secured to the wall structure or to said casing and preferably comprises a metal plate adapted to extend along the top of the casing where wall temperatures tend to be highest.
Advantageously the cover member is provided with ornamentation to blend with and enhance the visual appearance of the casing.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing which is a fragmentary perspective view of the upper portion of a gas fired space heater incorporating a cover member according to the invention.
Referring to the drawing, the heater is provided with a casing 5 having an upper hood portion 6 incorporating a grille 7 through which heated air is emitted to the room to be heated. In use the heater is fitted in position with the casing flush against a suitable wall surface through which a flue is formed to remove combustion products. When fitted in domestic locations the wall surface will in many instances be wallpapered and the temperature immediately around, and particularly above, the appliance must be controlled to prevent risk of discolouration of the wallpaper.
In order to enable the appliance to be fitted to a combustible wall where the temperature above the casing exceeds that which gives rise to a risk of discolouration, a cover member 8 is detachably fitted above the hood portion 6 of the casing. The cover member comprises an elongated metal plate adapted to butt against the surface of the wall and be secured thereto by screws 9 so as to form an extension of the casing of the appliance with which it is designed to blend aesthetically.
In use of the invention combustible material such as wallpaper is first removed fron the wall surface in the area behind and immediately above the casing and the cover member 8 is secured in position on the wall. The appliance is then fitted so that the cover plate protects above the hood 6 and thus forms an extension of the casing overlying and concealing the area of the wall beyond the casing from which the wallpaper or other combustible material has been removed.
Various modifications may be made without deparating from the invention. For example the shape, size and appearance of the cover member may be altered substantially dependent on the heater to which it is fitted and the area of the adjacent wall surface it is desired to protect. In some cases this could extend around the sides of the casing in addition to or instead of along the top. The cover member may also be more elaborately decorated if desired to enhance the appearance of the appliance. In some instances the cover member may be formed integrally with the casing or may be detachably mounted on the casing instead of being separate from the casing.
Whilst endeavo-uring in the foregoing specification to draw attention to those features of the invention believed to be of particular importance it should be understood that the Applicant claims protection in respect of any patentable feature or combination of features hereinbefore referred to and/or shown in the drawings whether or not particular emphasis has been placed thereon.
