Description
A HAIR CLIP
The present invention relates to a hair clip.
It is known to provide a hair clip with a plastics body of aesthetic design and metallic gripping members mounted thereto for gripping hair. Such a hair clip requires separate metallic parts and a plastics part to be mounted together.
The present invention seeks to provide a hair clip of much simpler and cheaper construction.
Thus according to a first aspect of the invention there is provided a hair clip which comprises a body, a first gripping member provided on the body, a second gripping member hingedly mounted at one end on the body and co-operable with the first gripping member to grip hair, and releasable fastening means provided for fastening together the other end of the second gripping member and the body, wherein the first gripping member and the body are formed as an integral plastics moulding.
Preferably, the second gripping member is also of plastics material.
Preferably, the body has a pair of ears integral with the body and upstanding therefrom in spaced relationship and the second gripping member is hingedly connected to said ears.
Preferably, the second gripping member is resiliently deformed about and bears against the ears when fastened to the body. More preferably, the second gripping member bears against steps provided on the ears.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a hair clip which comprises a body, a first gripping member on the body, a second gripping member hingedly mounted at one end on the body and co-operable with the first gripping member to grip hair, and releasable fastening means provided for fastening together the other end of the second member and the body, wherein the second gripping member is resiliently deformed about and bears against abutment means provided on the body when fastened to the body.
Preferably, ears are provided integral with the body for hingedly mounting. the second gripping member to the body.
More preferably, the abutment means is in the form of steps integral with the ears.
The invention will now be further described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of a hair clip of the invention in an open condition;
Figure 2 shows one side of the hair clip of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 shows the one side of the hair clip of
Figure 2 in a closed condition.
Referring to the drawings, the hair clip shown therein comprises a body 10 in an aesthetic design, a bowed first gripping member 11 provided pn the body 10, the first gripping member 11 and the body 10 being formed as an integral plastics moulding, and a second plastics gripping member 12. The second gripping member 12 is hingedly mounted by a hinge connection 13 at one end 14 on the body 10 and is co-operable with the first gripping member 11 to grip hair. Releasable fastening means 15 are provided at the other end 16 of the second gripping member 12 for fastening the second gripping member 12 to the body 10.
The hinge connection 13 comprises laterally extending projections 17 at the one end 14 of the second gripping member 12, and a pair of ears 18 integrally moulded on and upstanding from the body 10. The projections 17 are journalled in aligned holes 19 provided in the ears 18.
A longitudinal slot 20 is provided in the second gripping member 12 to receive the first gripping member 11 when the second gripping member 12 is fastened to the body 10. Ridges 21 are provided on cooperating surfaces of the gripping members 11 and 12.
The fastening means 15 comprises a pair of hooks 22 integrally formed on the body 10 and upstanding therefrom, and a formation including two parallel arms 23 provided at the other end 16 of the second gripping member 12. The two hooks 22 face away from each other and cooperate with respective arms 23 when the second gripping member 12 is fastened to the body 10. The fastening means 15 is releasable by pressing the pair of hooks 22 towards each other by applying manual pressure to lateral projections 24 provided on the hooks 22.
Abutment means in the form of steps 26 is provided on the ears 18. To fasten the other end 16 of the second gripping member 12 to the body 10, the second gripping member 12 is pivoted towards the body 10.
The steps 26 bear against the one end 14 of the second gripping member 12 before the fastening means 15 engages completely. This results in the second gripping member 12 being resiliently deformed about the steps 26 when fastened to the body 10 so that when the fastening means 15 is released, the other end 16 of the second gripping member 12 will spring away from the hooks 22.
The closed condition of the hair clip is shown in
Figure 3 where the second gripping member 12 is fastened to the body 10.
In use, the hair clip is opened by releasing the fastening means 15 as aforementioned. The second gripping member 12 is inserted into the hair of a user. The body 10, which carries the first gripping member 11, is then pivoted towards the second gripping member 12 and the fastening means 15 engages.
In the closed condition, the gripping member 11 projects into the slot 20 and this in conjunction with the ridges 21 of the gripping members 11 and 12 results in a good gripping action.
Various modifications will be apparent to those skilled in the art and it is desired to include all such modifications as fall within the scope of the accompanying claims.
