Abstract
A tie for securing an outer skin to a timber framed inner skin comprising a wood-penetrating and gripping means 20, a cavity-spanning portion 12 and a section 14 which can be used to fix the tie to the outer skin. A method of securing a brick or stone outer wall skin 22 to a timber frame 26 in which a hole 34 is drilled through the outer wall and a tie having a wood thread at one end is inserted through the hole from the outside and screwed into the wooden frame, a head end of said tie being thereafter secured to the outer skin. <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN BUILDING STRUCTURES
The present invention relates to the renovation of cavity wall structures comprising a brick or stone outer skin and a wooden framed inner skin, and more particularly to the replacement of ties by means of which such skins are secured to one another.
With a cavity wall structure, it has been the practice to tie a brick outer skin to a wooden framed inner skin by means of steel brackets which are secured by nails or screws to the wooden frame and which are anchored in the mortar of the brickwork.
When rusting of the brackets or ties occurs the exterior wall is disturbed and may bulge. A remedy is to remove the rusted ties and re-secure the outer skin to te timber frame.
It is therefore an object of the present invention to provide a method and a tie which can be used to secure a masonry outer skin to a wooden framed inner skin.
In accordance with the present invention, a tie for securing an outer skin to a timber framed inner skin comprises a wood-penetrating and gripping means, a cavity-spanning portion and a section which can be used to fix the tie to the outer skin.
In one embodiment the last-mentioned end is adapted to be anchored in the outer skin by resin-bonding, the said section being received in a hole into which the resin is introduced.
Preferably the tie is made of stainless steel.
In accordance with a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of securing a brick or stone outer wall skin to a timber frame in which a hole is drilled through the outer wall and a tie having a wood thread at one end is inserted through the hole from the outside and screwed into the wooden frame, and in which a head end of said tie is thereafter secured to the outer skin.
Preferably the head end of the tie is anchored in the hole in the outer skin by resin-bonding.
By way of example only, a specific embodiment of the present invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the tie; and
Fig. 2 is a cross-sectional view of a tie fixed between a brick outer skin and a timer-framed inner skin of a building.
With reference to the drawings, Fig. 1 shows the tie 10 according to the invention. The tie has an elongate cylindrical shank 12. Away from the shank there is a head section 14 which has a kinked portion 16 and a straight portion 18.
At the end distant from the head tie is a screw thread 20 designed to be screwed into wood, the threaded portion providing a means to grip and penetrate the wooden frame.
Fig. 2 shows a cavity wall 22 comprising an outer skin 24 of brickwork and an inner skin 26 which is made up of a frame 28 of 100mm x 50mm timber, to which outer boards of 13mm plywood 30 and inner boards (not shown) of plasterboard are secured. As built, the outer skin 24 is attached to the inner skin 26 by an array of galvanized steel angle brackets (not shown). One shank of each bracket is attached by screws to the frame 28 and the other shank is received in the mortar 32 between the courses of bricks 24.
In time, the brackets rust, particularly those portions in the mortar 38. The rusting causes expansion which leads to distortion of the outer skin 24. The method of the present invention is for the purpose of preventing or stopping such expansion.
In carrying out the method of the invention it is necessary first to locate the existing brackets, e.g., by using a metal detector, and mark the tie locations. The corroded ends of the brackets are then exposed by cleaning out the mortar around them and the corroded ends are then isolated from the brickwork by means of an expansible packing material or by means of a pouch filled with grease, as described in U.K. Patent Specifications Nos. 2179990A and 2145458A. Thereafter the mortar is made good by re-pointing.
Before isolating the corroded ends of the brackets, replacement ties 10 are fitted in a suitable array and at locations spaced from the brackets. To fit a tie 10, a hole 34 of about 13mm diameter is drilled through a brick 24. The tie 10 is then pushed through the hole 34 in the brick and a suitable tool adaptor is placed over to the head region. This enables the tie to be screwed into the wooden frame 28 using a conventional screwdriver, spanner or brace. The adaptor is removed when the tie is in place. When the tie is well embedded in the wooden frame it can be secured to the brick by a suitable fixing means, such as by resin-bonding.
Preferably epoxy or polyester resin is used and the hole grouted to match the brick.
The invention is not limited to the embodiment shown. For example, the means of securing the tie to the brick could involve the use of different cements or expansion bolts. If expansion bolts are used the straight portionl8 requires slight modification in that it is extended and screwthreaded to receive a conventional expanding anchorage of the kind described for example in our copending application of even date.
Claims (7)
1. A tie for securing an outer skin to a timber framed inner skin comprising a wood-penetrating and gripping means, a cavity-spanning portion and a section which can be used to fix the tie to the outer skin.
2. A tie as claimed in claim 1, wherein said section is adapted to be anchored in the outer skin by resin-bonding, the said section being received in a hole into which the resin is intrucd.
3. A tie as claimed in chair 1 or 2, when made integrally of stainless steel.
4. A. method of securing a brick or stone outer wall skin to a timber frame in which a hole is drilled throw the outer wall and a tie having a wood thread at one end is inserted through the hole from the outside and screwed into the wooden frame, head end of said tie being thereafter secured to the outer skin.
5. A method as claimed in claim 4, wherein the head end of the tie is archcrec in the hc e in tbc outer skin by resin-bonding.
6. A tie for securing an outer skin to a timber-framed inner skin, substantially- as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
7. A method of securing a brick or stone outer wall skin to a timber frame, substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
