220,499. Whitlock, J. G. Oct. 10, 1923. No Patent granted (Scaling fee not paid). Stuffing-boxes, substitutes for; grit, excluding. - In a pump for sandy water in which entrance of grit into the stuffing-box is prevented by supplying clean w a t e r under pressure to a groove 8 below the stuffing-box, the water is supplied by a pipe 9, controlled by a valve 12, having an arm operated by a cross-head 15 on the p u m p plunger. A single clean - water pump may supply the stuffing-boxes of several dredging pumps.
