Abstract
An open topped chamber 10 is arranged to be connected to the base of a centrifugal submersible pump, e.g. for fish ponds, bilges or basements, which chamber 10 comprises a hose-connecting part 11 extending from the chamber 10. The chamber 10 provides an extension to the inlet of the pump by means of a hose to be connected to the hose-connecting part 11. Preferably, a grill 14 is fixed in the hose-connecting part 11 to prevent objects from entering the chamber 10 or the pump through the host-connecting part. An air vent (13, Figs. 1 and 2). <IMAGE>
Description
SUBMERSIBLE PUMPS
The invention relates to submersible pumps particulary although not exclusively for use in fish ponds and the like.
At present such pumps are provided with an open base, an impeller and an outlet leading from above and usually to the side of the impeller. The open base may and usually is provided with a grill to prevent large objects entering the pump and fouling the impeller which fits onto or is integrally formed with the base.
The pumps may also in a form suitable for bilge pumps or basement water pumps and automatically arranged to start if and whenever the level of water rises above a predetermined height. The pumps can sit on the floor of the bilge or basement so that water enters the open or grilled base and is pumped through the pump while the pump is running.
It is an object of the invention to increase the range of uses of these pumps.
According to one aspect of the invention there is provided an open topped chamber arranged to be connected to the base of a centrafugal submersible pump which chamber has a hose connecting part extending from the chamber.
Preferably, the chamber has a manually operable vent to enable entrapped gas to be vented from the chamber as required.
According to another aspect of the invention there is provided a centrafugal submersible pump having a chamber at its inlet with a hose connecting part integrally formed therewith.
The chamber may be formed of moulded chemically resistive plastics material.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows an isometric view of a chamber for a pump;
Figure 2 shows an underplan view of the chamber; and
Figure 3 shows partly sectioned parts of a pump with the chamber fitted to it.
Referring to the drawings, in Figures 1 and 2 a chamber 10 is formed of moulded plastics material and has a hose connecting part 11 integrally formed therewith. The chamber has a number of webs or stiffening sections 12. A grill 14 fits at the interface between the connecting part 11 and the circumference of the chamber 10 to prevent certain objects entering the pump which might damage the pump impeller.
A spring biassed vent 13 is mounted in the side of the chamber to bleed air from the chamber when the vent plunger is depressed manually. It may be necessary to orientate the pump and chamber so that the vent 13 is uppermost to ensure all the air escapes from the chamber while the vent plunger is depressed.
In Figure 3, a pump and the chamber are fitted as for use. It will be noted tha-t when a hose is fitted to the part 11 its loose end can be positioned anywhere to evacuate water or other liquid from there and via the pump. The loose end of the hose must of course be maintained underwater once the air has been vented by use of the vent 13. The loose end of the hose can be used as an underwater "vacuum cleaner" to clear the bottom of tanks, such as fish tanks.
Claims (6)

2. A chamber as claimed in claim 1, wherein a grill is provided in the hose-connecting part to prevent pump fouling objects from entering the chamber through the hose-connecting part.
3. A chamber as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, wherein a manually operable vent is provided to enable entrapped gas to be vented from the chamber.
4. A chamber as claimed in any one of the preceding claims formed of plastics material.
5. A centrifugal submersible pump incorporating at its inlet a chamber claimed in any one of the preceding claims.
6. A chamber substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to Figures 1 to 3 of the accompanying drawings.
