Description
-T ' 22_ 0 2 13 7 Hair Tonic Applicator and Scalp Patting Instrument This
invention relates to an applicator for applying a hair tonic, and more particularly to an instrument for applying hair tonic to the scalp of a user and patting the scalp as the hair tonic is applied.
A known method for toning the scalp of the user by patting his scalp is to apply a hair tonic to the scalp of the user which is then massaged slightly with the ends of fingers of the user and patted with a scalp-patting brush to stimulate the scalp so as to enhance the blood flow in the veins thereof, whereby hair loss from the scalp is prevented and dandruff and excess sebum are removed from the scalp.
In a known method, the application of hair tonic and patting of the scalp are carried out sequentially by the use of separate instruments, i.e., a hair tonic applicator and a scalp-patting brush, so that the fingers of the user tend to get smudged with the hair tonic when the user massages his scalp after application of the hair tonic. In this conventional method, to prevent a scalp-patting brush from being smudged, it is necessary to carry out scalp patting with the brush after the hair tonic has been removed from the user's fingers. However, this is very cumbersome.
Embodiments of the present invention avoid this cumbersome procedure providing an instrument for applying hair-tonic to the scalp and patting of the scalp in an easy manner.
According to the present invention, there is provided an instrument for applying hair tonic to the scalp and patting the scalp, comprising:
a hair tonic reservoir having an open end portion; a sleeve-like cap located adjacent the open end portion of sai d reservoir and defining a cavity; a valve unit having a valve stem, mounted adjacent the open end portion of the reservoir, a forward portion of said valve stem extending into the cavity of the sleeve-like cap and having a flange-like stopper in its front end, and a weight axially movably mounted on said valve stem and located in the cavity of the cap, wherein the cap includes the cavity in its middle portion, brush means in its forward portion and an engaging means in its rear portion for attaching the cap to the open end portion of the hair tonic reservoir, said brush means being located in a brush location bore of the sleeve-like cap, said brush location hole communicating with the cavity of the sleeve-like cap via a communication hole.
The invention will now be described by way of non-limiting example, reference being made to the accompanying Figure 1 which is a longitudinal sectional view of the instrument for applying hair-tonic to the userls scalp and patting the scalp.
Referring to Figure 1, hair tonic reservoir 1 also serves as the main body of a hair-tonic applicator and scalp-patting instrument. In a front open end portion of the reservoir 1 is mounted a valve unit 6 comprising a valve seat 2, a spring support 3, a valve spring 4 and a valve stem 5. References herein to the front end of the instrument denote the end of the instrument which is presented to the user's scalp, i.e. the lower end of the instrument as viewed in Figure 1.
A sleeve-like front cap 13 is threadably mounted on a front-end portion of.the reservoir 1 and provided with an internal cavity 9.
A front end of the front cap 13 is generally closed and includes brush-implantation holes 11 in which the tufts 12 of a brush are inserted.
The rear end of each brushA mplantation hole 11 communicates with the cavity 9 of the front cap 13 via a respective communciation hole 10 provided in the closed end of the front cap 13.
The valve stem 5 of the valve unit 6 extends into the cavity 9 of the front cap 13, and its front end is connected to a flange-like stopper 7.
A short cylindrical weight 8 is axially movably mounted on the valve stem 5 between the stopper 7 and the spring support 3, and is of shorter length than the distance between the rear surface of the stopper 7 and the front surface of the spring support 3.
h The valve spring 4 of the valve unit 6 is selected to have a stiffness, having regard to the weight 8, so that the valve spring 4 can support the weight 8 without deflecting except when the weight 8 travels at or above a certain velocity.
In the illustrated instrument, patting is carried out by the brush 12 of the instrument. During the patting operation, the instrument is axially reciprocated and this causes the weight 8 to reciprocate on the valve stem 5 between the rear surface of the stopper 7 and the front surface of the spring support 3. When the weight 8 hits the stopper 7, the valve stem 5 is moved forward against a resilient force exerted thereon by the valve spring 4 so that the valve unit 6 is opened to permit hair tonic in the reservoir 1 to flow through the valve unit to be fed to the tufts 12 of the brush of the front cap 13 through the cavity 9 of the front cap 13 and the communication holes 10.
The illustrated instrument makes it possible to apply hair tonic and pat the scalp using a single instrument in an easy and convenient manner. Specifically, in the illustrated instrument, the hair tonic is supplied to the user's scalp when the user pats his scalp with the brush of the instrument, and this makes it possible to carry out hair tonic application and patting of the scalp simultaneously.

Claims (5)
1. An instrument for applying hair tonic to the scalp and patting the scalp, comprising:
hair tonic reservoir having an open end portion; sleeve-like cap located adjacent the open end portion of said reservoir and defining a cavity; a valve unit having a valve stem, mounted adjacent the open end portion of the reservoiri a forward portion of said valve stem extending into the cavity of the sleeve-like cap and having a flange-like stopper in itsfront end, and a weight axially movably mounted on said valve stem and located in the cavity of the cap, wherein the cap includes the cavity in its middle portion, brush means in its forward portion and an engaging means in its rear portion for attaching the cap to the open end portion of the hair tonic reservoir, said brush means being located in a brush location bore of the sleeve- like cap, said brush location hole communicating with the cavity of the sleeve-like cap via a communication hole.
2. An instrument according to claim 1, wherein said valve stem is spring biassed towards a position in which it prevents flow from said reservoir.
3. An instrument according to claim 2, wherein the spring bias is selected such that the equilibrium loading applied by the weight is insufficient to open the valve, but that an impact loading is sufficient to open said valve.
4. An instrument substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as illustrated in, the accompanying figure.
5. All and any novel features and combinations and subcombinations thereof substantially as herein disclosed.
