Description

O ll.; q 2 2' 0 13 8 8 "A HOLDER FOR AN ANTI-THEFT STEERING LOCK FOR MOTOR
VEHICLW The Invention relates to a holder for an anti-theft steering lock for motor vehicles of the kind comprising a hollow moulded plastics body having a tubular front part adapted to surround the steering column of a vehicle and having a radial aperture for receiving a movable dead bolt adapted to co-operate with an annular locking means rotating integrally with the vehicle steering column and having a series of apertures for engaging the bolt.
In the case of holders of the kind defined hereinbefore, there is a problem of ensuring the required resistance-to torsion which may be transmitted by the bolt if an attempt is made to steal the car by smashing the bolt and forcibly rotating the vehicle steering wheel. For this purpose It Is usually necessary to give the holders a bulky structure or provide reinforcing parts, which. always increases the complexity and cost of manufacturing the holder by moulding.
The object of the invention is to avo id the aforementioned disadvantages and construct a holder of the initially-defined kind which has a relatively simple, light structure but ensures the required strength and resistance to attempts to force open the bolt of the anti-theft steering lock..
To this end, according to the invention, an annular metal frame is attached to the tubular part of the holder and has an aperture for the bolt and parts for securing to the body.
As a result of this feature the tubular part of the holder has extremely high resistance to torsion and in operation can effectively _oppose forces transmitted by the bolt In any attempts to force it open, without the need for special modifications or complications in the manufacture of the holder by moulding.
Preferably, the holder has a number of Integral axial projections which engage In corresponding recesses in the metal frame so as to retain It in rotation, and the metal frame has-axial retaining parts bent Into corresponding re-entrant parts of the body.
The invention will now be described in detail with reference to the ac companyinS drawings, given by way of non-limitative example only, in wh ich:
Fig. 1 is. a diagrammatic view in front elevation of a holder for an antitheft. steering lock for motor vehicles according to the Invention; Fig. 2 is a partial view In section along line II-II in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 Is a larger-scale view in section along line III-III of Fig. 1.
With reference to the drawings, the general reference 1 denotes a holder for an anti-theft steering lock for motor vehicles, comprising a hollow body of moulded plastics, one side of which is adapted in known manner for Installing a Yale lock (not illustrated) for actuating the anti-theft steering lock and the associated ignition key.
Body 1 is conventionally shaped and will therefore not be described In detail. For the purpose of the Invention it is sufficient to explain that the body has a tubular front part 2 adapted coaxially to surround the steering column of a vehicle, diagrammatically indicated by A in F ig. 1. The bottom region of the tubular part 2 has a radial aperture 3 for receiving a dead bolt C movable by the Yale lock between a retracted inoperative position and an extended locking t 11 1 position. In the extended position, bolt C is adapted in known manner to co-operate with an annular locking means B which surrounds the tubular part 2 and rotates integrally with the steering column A. The locking means B is formed in known manner with apertures for engaging the bolt C In the extended position so as to prevent the -steering column A from rotating.
According to the invention, an annular-metal frame 4 Is secured to the tubular part 2 of holder 1 and has an aperture 5 facing the aperture 3 for the bolt C.
Frame 4 Is mechanically secured to holder 1 by fins 6 and side parts. 7 which, as shown In Figs. 2 and 3, are bent against corresponding retaining surfaces 8, 9 on the tubular part 2.
Also, as illustrated in Fig. 2, the tubular part 2 has a number (four In the example illustrated) of axial projections 10 which engage corresponding recesses 11 In the metal frame 4 so as to lock it in rotation.
During operation, In simple and economic manner, the frame 4 ensures the required resistance to torsion or to. pulling off the tubular part 2 of body 1 In attempts to force open the bolt C by forcing the vehicle steering wheel.
