Description

FRAME MEMBER This invention relates to a frame member for supporting a door and a window.
According to the invention there is provided a frame member for supporting adoor and a.window', the frame member being formed by extrusion with a substantially constant cross-section and comprising a hollow main body portion, a first continuous recess along one side of the main body portion for accommodating a window-carrying frame, and a second continuous recess along the opposite side of the main body portion having a restricted opening for slidably accommodating one leaf of a door hinge.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings', in which: Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of a frame member according to the invention, and Figure 2 is a perspective view of a frame structure incorporating the frame member according to the invention.
Referring now to the drawings, wherein similar numerals have been used to indicate like parts, there is shown therein a frame member generally indicated 'at 10 according to the invention.
The frame member 10, which is formed with a substantially constant cross-section by extrusion from a suitable material such as aluminium or plastics material, comprises a hollow main body portion 11. The main body portion 11 has a continuous recess 12 formed along one side 13 to accommodate a window-carrying frame 14 (Figure 2). Further, the portion 11 has a recess 15 formed on the side 16 opposite to the side 13. The recess 15 is formed by spaced-apart right-angled flanges 18,19 integral with the portion 11 and which face each other to define the recess 15 which thereby has a restricted opening. The flange 19 further has an outwardly extending rebate member 20. The rebate member 20 has a recess 21 formed on its inner face for holding a sealing member as will be described below in relation to Figure 2.Further, the portion 11 has a pair of internal flanges 22 formed integrally with front and rear walls 23,24 of the portion 11 and extending towards one another. The free end 25 of each flange has a substantially semi-circular portion 26 for a purpose to be described below.
In Figure Z, the frame member 10 is shown in use in a construction of door frame 30. The member 10 is fixed at its lower end 31 to a drainage cill 32 which in turn is fixed directly to a masonary structure (not shown) defining a door or window opening. A window or sidelight frame 14 carrying a window 27 is accommodated in the continuous recess 12, preferably as an interference fit.
One leaf of a door hinge 33 is accommodated in the recess 15 and may be selectively positioned anywhere along the length of the recess 15 by sliding. The other leaf of the hinge 33 supports a door 34 which when in the closed position abuts against a sealing member 35 accommodated in the recess 21 formed in the rebate member 20. Further recesses 36 formed in the side 13 adjacent to the recess 12 may also accommodate sealing members (not shown) to seal the window frame 14 on to the member 10.
The upper end 37 of the member 10 is fixed to a cross-piece (not shown) by screws (not shown) which engage in the semi-circular portions 26. The member 10 is fixed to the drainage cill 32 in a similar manner.
If a window 27 is not required in a particular structure, the side 13 of the member 10 may be fixed directly to a sidewall of a masonary structure with the door 34 supported at the opposite side 16.
It is envisaged that the member 10 will be manufactured and sold as a component of kit of parts for assembly into a frame structure as illustrated in Figure 2.

Claims (6)

1. A frame member for supporting a door and a window, the frame member being formed by extrusion with a substantially constant cross-section and comprising a hollow main body portion, a first continuous recess along one side of the main body portion for accommodating a window-carrying frame, and a second continuous recess along the opposite side of the main body portion having a restricted opening for slidably accommodating one leaf of a door hinge.
2. A frame member as claimed in claim 1, wherein the second continuous recess is formed by a pair of spaced-apart generally right-angled flanges facing one another on the said opposite side of the main body portion.
3. A frame member as claimed in claim 2', wherein one of the said flanges carries an outwardly-extending rebate member for a door carried by the hinge.
4. A frame member as claimed in claim 3, wherein the rebate member includes a recess for accommodating a sealing member against which a door may abut in use.
5. A frame member as claimed in any preceding claim, wherein the main body portion has a pair of internal flanges extending towards one another in a direction transverse the side-to-side direction of the main body portion', the free end of each flange having a partially circular cross-section to accommodate a screw or the like for fixing the member to a cross-piece.
6. A construction as claimed in claim 1, substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
6. A frame member as claimed in claim 1, substantially as described herein with reference to the accompanying drawings.
7. A door/window construction comprising a frame member as claimed in any preceding claim, a windowcarrying frame accommodated in the first recess', a hinge having one leaf accommodated in the second recess, and a door carried by the other leaf of the hinge.
Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows CLAIMS 1. A door/window construction comprising a frame member formed by extrusion with a substantially constant cross-section and comprising a hollow main body portion, a first continuous recess along one side of the main body portion, and a second continuous recess along the opposite side of the main body portion having a restricted opening, the construction further comprising a window-carrying frame accommodated in the first recess, a door hinge having one leaf slidably accommodated in the second recess, and a door carried by the other leaf of the hinge.
