Description
TRIM
This invention relates to trim.
According to a first aspect of the invention there is provided trim adapted to be secured to an article, wherein said trim is flexible so that it can be secured to and follow the shape of a part of the article having a curved configuration.
Advantageously the trim comprises a first member adapted to be secured to an article, and a second member, the first and second members being adapted to be secured to one another.
The first member can be secured to the article by, for example, staples or adhesive. The first member can be provided with a guide channel to assist with stapling the first member to the article.
Preferably cooperating formations are provided on the first and second members to enable them to be secured to one another. It is also preferable that the cooperating formations comprise a projection provided on the first member and a recess provided in the second member.
In one embodiment the formations are arranged such that there is a snap-fit between them.
In another embodiment the formations are arranged such that there is a sliding fit between them. In this embodiment the first and second members can be arranged such that the projection at one end of the first member is aligned with the recess at one end of the second member; the projection can then be slid into the recess by sliding the second member relative to the first member.
Desirably the trim, the projection and the recess are elongate. The projection and recess can be arranged so that they slide relative to one another in a direction substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the trim.
It is preferred that the trim is formed by extrusion. The trim is conveniently a plastics material, such as PVC.
The trim may be decorative, and it is preferred that the second member is provided with a decorative appearance. Thus, the first member can act as a securing member and the second member can act as a decorative member.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided trim comprising a first member adapted to be secured to an article, and a second member, wherein said first and second members are adapted to be secured to one another.
Advantageously, the second member is adapted to provide a decorative effect.
The trim according to the second aspect of the invention may be provided with one or more of the features of the trim according to the first aspect of the invention.
According to a third aspect of the invention there is provided a method of applying to an article trim comprising -first and second members, said method comprising securing the first member to the article and securing the second member to the first member.
Advantageously the first member is secured to the article before the second member is secured to the first member.
Preferably the second member is secured to the first member by aligning cooperating formations on the first and second members, then sliding said cooperating formations into engagement with one another.
The first member may be secured to the second member by, for example, staples or adhesive.
The trim according to the third aspect of the invention may be provided with one or more of the features of the trim according to the first or second aspects of the invention.
The trim may be used for any desired article, for example, walls or doors. However, the trim is especially useful as furniture trim for furniture articles.
The flexible nature of the trim enables it to be secured to articles which have curved portions. This is particularly useful because previously furniture trim had to be moulded to the desired shape when the shape included a curved portion. This precluded the possibility of extruding the trim and therefore increased production expenses.
Reference is now made to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of one embodiment of trim according to the invention; and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of a second embodiment of trim according to the invention.
Referring to Figure 1, decorative trim generally designated 10 comprises a first elongate member 12 and a second elongate member 14.
The first member 12 has a bottom surface 16 which can engage the surface of- an article (not shown) to enable the first member to be secured to the article.
The first and second members 12 and 14 have cooperating formations in the form of a projection 18 and a recess 20. The first and second members 12 and 14 are secured together by means of the projection 18 and the recess 20. The projection 18 is provided with an abutment surface 22 which engages an inner abutment surface of the recess 20, whereby the projection 18 is retained in the recess 20.
A rib 24 is provided along the edges of the first member 12 and is received in a corresponding recess 26 on the second member. The ribs 24 together with the projection 18 define guide channels 28 which assist with stapling the first member 12 to the article.
The first member 12 and the second member 14 are slidable with respect to one another so that they can be secured to one another. Furthermore, the first member 12 and the second member 14 are flexible so that the trim 10 can be secured to and can follow the shape of a part of the article having a curved configuration.
One way of securing the trim 10 to the article is as follows. The first member 12 is disposed on the article in the correct position in such a manner that it follows any curves on the article. A staple is then moved along the guide channels 28 and staples are injected at intervals through the first member 12 and into the article. This serves to secure the first member 12 to the article.
One end of the recess 20 is then aligned with one end of the projection 18; the first member 12 and second member- 14 are then moved relative to one another so that the projection 18 slides into the recess 20. This secures the second member 14 to the first member 12.
The second member 14 is as long as or longer than the first member 12, so that the entire first member 12 is covered by the second member 14.
An outer surface 30 of the second member 14 is provided with a decorative appearance.
The embodiment shown in Figure 2 is similar to the embodiment shown in Figure 1 and like parts have been designated with like reference numerals. The difference is that the second member 12 in Figure 2 is provided with an outer surface 32 which is different from the outer surface 30. Thus, the surface 32 provides a different decorative appearance.
