Abstract
A child's cot 10 is provided with a battery powered lamp 20 which provides illumination to the interior of the cot. The lamp 20 is mounted in an aperture 22 in an end wall 12 of the cot and is provided with a transparent or translucent cover 24 which is flush with the surface 26 of the end wall which faces towards the interior of the cot. In other embodiments the lamp is detachably mounted on the cot by clamp, suction, hook or magnetic means. <IMAGE>
Description
IMPROVEMENTS IN OR RELATING TO CHILDREN'S COTS
This invention relates to improvements in or relating to children's cots.
If a mains powered electric light is switched on in a child's room at night in order to check the child's condition, the intensity of the light, even if it is of low wattage, can cause a child who is asleep in its cot to wake, possibly with a start.
An object of this invention is to reduce the possibility of waking a sleeping child in its cot when checking on its condition at night.
The invention includes a battery powered lamp mounted own or adapted to be mounted on a child's cot to provide illumination to the interior thereof.
The lamp may be provided with clamp means, suction means, hook means, or magnetic means mounting or adapted to mount the lamp on a side wall or an end wall of the cot, and any of these mounting means may include means for adjusting the vertical position and/or the angle of the lamp relative to the cot. The lamp may be mounted or adapted to be mounted on a bracket secured or securable to a side wall or an end wall of the cot.
The invention also includes a child's cot provided with a battery powered lamp fixedly or removably mounted thereon to provide illumination to the interior of the cot.
The lamp may be mounted within a recess or aperture in a side wall or end wall of the cot, and in such a case the lamp may be provided with a transparent or translucent cover which is flush with a surface of said side wall or end wall and which faces towards the interior of the cot.
Advantageously the lamp may be provided with switch means remote from the interior of the cot.
In order that the invention may be well understood, two embodiments thereof, which are given by way of example only, will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a child's cot;
Figure 2 is a cross-section taken along the line II-II of Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a side view of an end wall of another cot showing a lamp mounted thereon.
Refer'ring first to Figures 1 and 2, there is shown a cot 10 having two opposed end walls 12 and 14 with side walls 16 and 18 extending therebetween.
A battery powered lamp 20 is mounted on the child's cot to provide illumination to the interior thereof. As illustrated, the lamp 20 is mounted
#0 in an aperture 22 in the end wall 12 located in an upper portion thereof. The lamp is provided with a transparent or translucent cover 24 which is flush with the surface 26 of the end wall 12 which faces towards the interior of the cot. Thus, advantageously, the lamp does not have any projecting portions which extend into the interior of the cot to form a safety hazard to a child within the cot.
The lamp has a housing 28 which is secured to the other surface 30 of the end wall 12 by bracket and screw fastening means schematically illustrated at 32. The cover 24 closes one end of the housing 28 and is preferably non-releasably secured to the housing. A removable cover 34 closes the other end of the housing and provides access to the batteries and light- source schematically illustrated at 36 within the housing interior to allow their replacement.
Switch means for the lamp are located remote from the interior of the cot and as illustrated comprises a pull switch 38 which depends from the housing 28 adjacent the surface 30 of the side wall 12.
As will be understood, such an arrangement hinders actuation of the lamp by a child in the cot. The batteries are dry cell batteries and the lamp is of a wattage which provides a low intensity of illumination to the interior of the cot.
It will be appreciated that the shape of the cover 24 may be other than the substantially rectangular shape illustrated. For example it may be circular, annular, square, triangular or any other polygonal shape. It may also take the profile of a cartoon character or animal. When the cover is translucent, it may be of any desirable colour.
It will also be understood that the switch means may be other than a pull switch as illustrated and may for example comprise a pull/push switch, a toggle switch, or a rotary switch.
Furthermore, whilst the lamp 20 is illustrated mounted in an aperture in the end wall 12, it may be mounted in a recess therein or in an aperture or recess in one of the side walls 16;18, for example within the top rail 40 of the side wall 16.
Although it is presently preferred to fixedly mount the lamp on the cot so that the lamp forms an integral part of the cot, it is also envisaged that the lamp may be removably mounted on a cot.
In this way, cots not provided with a lamp as original equipment may benefit from the present invention.
Figure 3 illustrates a battery powered lamp 42 which is mounted on -an end wall 44 of a cot by means of a clamp 46 which hooks over the top
#0 of the end wall 44 and is provided with an operating screw 48 which enables the back 50 of the lamp 42 to be brought into clamping engagement with the interior surface 52 of the end wall 44. The clamp thus operates in the same way as a conventional 'G-clamp'. When so clamped in position, a transparent or translucent cover 55 of the lamp faces the interior of the cot to provide illumination of the interior of the cot therethrough.
It is to be understood that the lamp 42 may alternatively be clamped to a side wall of the cot. Furthermore, alternative means may be provided for removably mounting a lamp on a cot to provide illumination to the interior thereof. For example, these means may include suction means comprising one or more suction pads, hook means, which merely hook over a side or end wall of the cot, or magnetic means comprising a magnetic piece and a keeper piece one of which is mounted to the cot and the other to the lamp. Further, the lamp may be adapted to mount on a bracket which itself is secured to a side wall or end wall of the cot.
