Abstract

A control circuit 3,5,6 responds to a deceleration sensor 2 to cause an electromechanical relay to interrupt the current flow to brake lights, or any other rear facing light, at a frequency dependent on the rate of vehicle deceleration. The sensor 2 may be a pendulum decelerometer with opto-electronic detector. The control circuit may respond to an abnormal rate of deceleration to cause the lights to continue flashing until the brake actuating mechanism is released. <IMAGE>

Description

A VARIABLE FREQUENCY, BRAKE LIGHT CONTROLLER FOR MOTORISED, ROAD VEHICLES.
Existing motor vehicle brake light systems are based on the principle of a simple on / off switch linked to the brake actuating mechanism. The brake light assembly is activated continuously during the period that the brake mechanism is applied. The brake light is only extinguished when the brake mechanism is released. This type of brake light system communicates to a following vehicle the fact that the leading vehicle is decelerating but does not impart any information concerning the rate of deceleration.
This invention describes a brake light system that switches the brake lights or any other rear facing lights at a frequency that is proportional to the rate of deceleration of the vehicle. Furthermore this invention memorises that excessive deceleration has occurred and continues to flash the rear brake lights after the vehicle has stopped or until the brake actuating mechanism is released, thus giving added protection to any road vehicle that may be required to decelerate rapidly to a standstill on the public highway.
A specific embodiment of this invention will now he described with reference to the attached drawings.
FIGURE .I. details a timing diagram showing the arake light characteristics under increasing rates of deceleration and after the vehicle has come to a standstill.
FIGURE .2. Shows a block diagram indicating the major features of the device. Items I is an enclosure within which items 2 though 6 are contained and mounted on the vehicle such that item 2 is aligned with the longitudinal axis of the vehicle. Item 2 is a pendulum decelerometer with optoelectronic sensors to detect rotational movement. Items 3 and 4 are commercially available integrated circuits. Item 5 is the control and memory logic module and consists of commercially available, small scale, integrated cicuits. Item 6 is the relay switching module and in addition to the relay, consists of commercially available, discrete, active and passive components.
FIGURE .3. illustrates the proposed method by which items 2, 3, 4, and 6 will be mounted on item 5, the printed circuit board.

Claims (1)

  1. I) An electromechanical device to interrupt the flow of electric current between the brake light switch and the brake light assembly of any motorised, road vehicle at a frequency determined by the rate of deceleration of the vehicle, 2) An electromechanical device as claimed in Claim I to interrupt the flow of electric current between the brake light switch and any rear facing light assembly designed for the purpose of signalling motor vehicle deceleration.
    3) An electromechanical device as claimed in Claim I or Claim 2 whereby an abnormal rate of deceleration is latched in an internal memory and signalled via the brake light or any other rear facing light designed for the purpose of signalling deceleration as a flashing light both before and after the vehicle has come to a standstill and reset only when the actuating mechanism is released.
