Abstract

There is disclosed a fifth wheel trailer coupling comprising a saddle having a coupling plate 1, in which wearing members 4 are arranged on the coupling plate at least at surface regions thereof which are greatly exposed to abrasion in service. These wearing members increase the service life of the coupling plate by strengthening the regions which are exposed to considerable wear, as a result of continuous friction with the usual steel supporting plate, particularly in the vicinity of bearing pockets on the outer marginal region of the coupling plate. The wearing members are introduced into the most highly stressed regions in the top of the coupling plate, and may be cast into the coupling plate or mechanically joined thereto. The service life of the coupling plate is therefore extended, with consequent economies. <IMAGE>

Description

SADDLE COUPLING WITH A COUPLING PLATE This invention relates to a fifth wheel trailer coupling comprising a coupling plate.
In the case of a saddle coupling of a fifth wheel trailer coupling, a saddle support with counterplate is located on the coupling plate, which is in constant frictional contact with a counterplate. When travelling and as a function of the field of use, dust and dirt penetrate between the counterplate and the coupling plate and lead to abrasion of the coupling plate surface. As the generally steel support plate is rigid, it runs along the outer marginal region edge during turning. This leads to a very considerable surface pressure and in certain circumstances the coupling plate can be frictionally stressed to such an extent that holes occur therein in the vicinity of the bearing pockets. It is then necessary to replace the coupling plate. It is obvious that abrasion or wear to the coupling plate surface must not be allowed to continue until strength of the plate is prejudiced.
The present invention therefore seeks to provide an arrangement which greatly absorbs and reduces abrasive wear, and is intended to be constructionally uncomplicated and inexpensive, whilst increasing the life of the complete coupling.
According to the invention there is provided a fifth wheel trailer coupling comprising a saddle having a coupling plate, in which wearing members are arranged on the coupling plate at least at surface regions thereof which are greatly exposed to abrasion in service.
A preferred embodiment of fifth wheel trailer coupling according to the invention is described hereinafter relative to the accompanying drawing which is diagrammatic plan view.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a coupling plate 1, of a saddle of a fifth wheel trailer coupling which is provided on its bottom surface with recesses 2 for receiving bearing blocks (not shown). As high friction is to be expected in the vicinity of the bearing pockets, i.e.
recesses 2, a respective wearing plate members 4 is provided at each high abrasion region of the upper surface of the coupling plate 1. The latter is preferably made from steel and can be cast into the plate material. The plate material is generally a GGG casting, steel casting or of sheet steel. The wearing plates can also be fixed with the aid of screws. A screw coupling naturally has the advantage of replaceability, which is necessary if the plate has become worn-through.
The wearing plate and coupling plate surfaces do not have to be in the same plane. An arrangement can be provided having a height difference between the two surfaces, the coupling plate surface being higher than the wearing plate surface, so that they only become level after considerable abrasive wear.
The proposed solution contributes of mitigating wear problems in fifth wheel couplings is achieved by ensuring that the life of the coupling plate is greatly extended.
As a function of the normal use, coupling plates of existing "saddles" normally have to be periodically replaced. A significant saving can be obtained through the use of the described arrangement.
The wearing plates or members 4 can be made from different materials, such as cast materials, steel and plastics.
It is also possible to use composites. It is also possible to provide fillers made from especially wearresistant materials in the wearing member, e.g. chill castings, such as granulated metal or plates can be cast into a GGG matrix.
