Abstract
A pocket insert closable e.g. by a sliding clasp fastener 34, for a purse, pochette, wallet or the like comprises opposed side walls formed by folding a fabric piece 10, and a gusset 16 linking the side walls at one end thereof so that the side walls can be moved away from each other without causing the side edges to be drawn towards each other. <IMAGE>
Description
PURSE
This invention relates to a purse pochette and more particularly a pocket closable by a zip fastener or the like suitable closure for a purse pochette, wallet or the like.
Closable pockets for example coin pockets, have hitherto been provided on the exterior of purses, that is to say, access to such coin pockets is from the outside of the purse. Attempts have been made to provide a coin pocket having a zip closure which is secured within the purse and also accessible from within the purse but such coin pockets have involved complicated, and hence expensive, production methods. A further problem with zip closed coin pockets is that if they are formed in the manner of a bag from two pieces of fabric joined along the bottom and sides, access to the pocket is only achieved after opening the zip by moving the opposed sides away from each other. That movement normally causes the side edges of the pocket to move towards each other, that is towards the middle of the pocket. However, if the side edges are secured to the purse the aforesaid movement of said side edges is restrained which in turn limits movement of the sides away from each other and hence restricts access to the coin pocket. Difficulty in removing coins from a coin pocket is usually a source of intense frustration and annoyance.
The present invention has been made from a consideration of the above mentioned problems.
According to the invention there is provided a pocket insert closable by a zip or like suitable closure for a purse pochette, wallet or the like wherein said pocket comprises opposed side walls, and gusset means linking said side walls adjacent one end thereof whereby said side walls can move away from each other without causing the side edges of the insert to be drawn towards each other.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Fig.l is a plan view of a blank for making a
pocket insert closable by a zip
fastener;
Fig.2 is a plan view of gusset means:
Fig.3 is a perspective view from one side of the
completed pocket insert; and
Fig.4 is a perspective view of a purse with the
pocket insert of Fig.3 fixed therein.
Referring to Fig.l a blank for a pocket insert comprises a single rectangular piece 10 of fabric, for example of leather, plastics or textile material. A narrow rectangular slot 12 is formed across the centre of piece 10 and. a cut 14 is made which extends from one end of slot 12 and right angles thereto but stops short of the edge of piece 10.
A gusset 16 shown in Fig.2 comprises a single piece of fabric which may be the same or different material as piece 10. The gusset comprises a substantially right angled triangular portion 18 joined along its hypotenuse 20 to a second portion 22 which is substantially wedge shaped.
To form the pocket insert, the free edge 24 of portion 18 of the gusset 16 is secured, as by stitching adjacent the right hand edge of the cut 14 so that the said portion 18 is disposed as indicated by the dotted lines in Fig.l. The gusset is folded along hypotenuse 20 to bring the free edge 26 of portion 22 thereof adjacent the side edge 28 of piece 10. The piece 10 is then folded along the major axis of the slot 12 and the abutting edges 28, 30 and 32 secured together, as by stitching. The gusset edge 26 is secured between the edges 28. The resultant pocket is provided with a zip fastener closure 34 along the slot 12.
The pocket insert can be fitted in a purse, for example as shown in Fig.4. The purse includes side walls 40, 42, which are folded concertina fashion. The side edges 28, 32 of the insert are secured, as by stitching 44 between folds of the said side walls so that the pocket is intermediate the front and rear of the purse.
In the embodiment shown in Fig.4 the pocket is arranged with the gusset 16 opening towards the rear of the purse. If desired the pocket can be constructed and fitted in the purse with the gusset opening towards the front. In addition the pocket does not have to be spaced from the front or rear walls of the purse but can be located adjacent thereto if desired, the gusset being appropriately disposed so that it opens towards the interior of the purse.
The provision of the gusset enables the sides of the coin pocket to be moved away from each other without being restrained by the side edges 28 and 32 of the insert and/or the attachment of the said side edges to the side walls of the purse.
As will be evident from the foregoing the pocket insert is straightforward to manufacture and its installation in a purse can be effected quickly and with economy.
The pocket is particularly intended for holding coins but it is not limited to that use.
The invention is not restricted to the above described embodiment. Many variations and modifications are possible. Although in the embodiment just described reference has been made to a zip closure it is to be understood that other kinds of closures can be used, particularly closures which are flexible or partially flexible. For example the closure may comprise a flap which extends over the slot 12 and which may, if desired, be securable to the exterior of the pocket by suitable means such as a stud orthe like. Other kinds of suitable closure may include closures used in different kinds of purses for example a closure of the type known in so-called "ladies purses" comprising a rigid frame member mounted in the pocket on either side of the slot and which can be releasably fastened such as by a pivotable clip adapted to engage the frame members so as to close the slot 12.
Claims (8)
1. A pocket insert closable by a sliding clasp fastener or like suitable closure, for a purse, pochette, wallet or the like wherein said pocket insert comprises opposed side walls and gusset means linking the side walls adjacent one end thereof whereby said side walls can be moved away from each other without causing the side edges to be drawn towards each other.
2. A pocket insert as claimed in Claim 1, wherein the gusset means is provided at that side of the insert which is the first part to be opened by actuation of the sliding clasp fastener.
3. A pocket insert as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the insert is formed from a blank, said blank having a slot which defines the opening into the insert and a second slot extending away from the first slot, the gussett means being attached to opposite sides of the second slot.
4. A pocket insert as claimed in Claim 1, wherein a frame is provided on either side of the opening into the insert, closure means being engageable with the frame.
5. A pocket insert substantially as described herein with reference to Figs.l to 3 of the accompanying drawings.
6. A purse, pochette, wallet or the like containing a pocket insert as claimed in any preceding claim.
7. A purse, pochette, wallet or the like as claimed in Claim 7, wherein the insert is disposed so that the gusset opens into the interior of the said purse, pochette, wallet or the like.
8. A purse, pochette, wallet or the like substantially as described herein with reference to Fig.4 of the accompanying drawings.
