Abstract

The invention relates to a process for sterilising packing material (in particular packaging containers) by application of a solution of disinfectant in a moist and hot atmosphere with subsequent complete drying. In a typical process, the containers are sprayed with a solution of hydrogen peroxide and subsequently exposed to flowing superheated steam or hot moist air.

Description

PROCESS FOR STERILISING PACKING MATERIAL The invention relates to a process for sterilising packing material, in particular packaging containers, by applying a disinfectant, preferably a hydrogen peroxide solution and suWseque-. dryng.
For aseptic packing of foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals or the like, the packing material must be sterilised before the sterile contents are put in; physical or chemical processes are used for this. With chemical sterilisation, spraying a bactericidal 35% hydrogen peroxide solution onto surfaces to be sterilised has proved an effective method. Hydrogen peroxide is either sprayed on or condensed from an atmosphere containing hydrogen peroxide, and destroys the micro-organIsms present on the surface of the packing material within a matter of seconds, and is finally removed by hot air.
The sterillsing effect of the hydrogen peroxide is caused by non-specific oxidation of the organic substances.
Sterilisation of a pack may for example proceed as follows (Fig. 1).
- pack sprayed with hydrogen peroxide solution or condensation of H202 steam - action time : 1 s - drying time to point where hydrogen peroxide removed without trace : 7 s It may be necessary to improve the sterilisation effect in some circumstances.
Tests have shown that neither an increase in the hydrogen peroxide quantity nor an extension of the action time causes any appreciable improvement of the effect.
The object of the invention is thus to provide a process that increases the sterilisation effect to many times that of the conventional process.
The invention is based on the fact that one of the most important parameters for chemical sterilisation of packing materials is the reaction temperature. As hydronen peroxide prec p tates Ir.
the form of small droplets or as a fine film, its temperature is determined by the state of the ambient atmosphere. A balance is thus very quickly established between the heat supplied by exchange of heat with the gaseous phase and heat removed by the exchange of material with the gaseous phase (vaporisation). The equilibrium temperature, the so-called cold limit temperature, is 18 C at ambient temperature 25 C and absolute humidity 0.1 kg. H20/kg drv air.
Since in the example- described above the packing is in contact with sterile ambient air between its exposure to hydrogen peroxide and drying, the reaction temperature during the action time is 18 C.
A solution to this problem consists in placing the packing material in a hot, moist atmosphere following exposure to hydrogen peroxide.
This makes it possible to increase the reaction temperature to more than 95 C, depending on the temperature and humidity.
The flow and temperature of the steam or moist hot air are regulated so as to ensure that on the one hand no appreciable condensation occurs to dilute the hydrogen peroxide solution and on the other hand that there is no substantial vaporisation of the hydrogen peroxide, since premature drying would reduce the reaction time.
Apart from the hydrogen peroxide droplets, the packing material also becomes hot, which accelerates the subsequent drying process. This makes it possible to reduce the drying time and increase the action time with the same dimensions of the machine and output per hour.
The process according to the invention may be used for the sterilisation process describcA above in the following manner (Fig. 2): - pack strayed with hydrogen peroxide solution or H20 steam condensate.
- application of steam ; 3 s - pack dried to point where hydrogen peroxide solution removed without trace : 5 s Tests have confirmed that the sterilisation effect can be considerably increased by this means, compared with the conventional process.
