Abstract

Apparatus for cleaning the interior of a cask comprises a rotatable support 12 for the cask and a rotary brush 6 mounted on a vertically displaceable shaft 2 for cleaning the inside of the cask. The support 12 may be a turntable or rollers. The shaft 2 may be pneumatically actuated by air from cylinder 3. The cask cleaning equipment may be housed in a cabinet and dust produced during cleaning may be removed via a suction hose. <IMAGE>

Description

"Cask Cleansing Apparatus" This invention relates to cask cleaning apparatus for use in cleaning the inside of casks.
The wooden casks which are used in the distilling industry are required to have charring removed from the inside surface.
According to the present invention there is provided cask cleaning apparatus comprising a support for rotatably supporting casks to be cleaned, a cleaning head movable relative to said support and a cleaning brush on said head for cleaning the inside of casks.
Preferably a drive motor is provided to drive the cleaning brush in a rotary manner.
Preferably also the cleaning head is mounted on a support for movement along the length of a cask to be cleaned.
Preferably also hydraulic drive means are provided for moving the cleaning head.
Most preferably said hydraulic drive means is an air cylinder.
Preferably also an air tight enclosure is provided for the apparatus.
Preferably also dust extraction means are provided for the enclosure.
Most preferably the dust extraction means comprise a suction hose arrangement.
Embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Fig.l is a front elevation of one embodiment of cask cleaning apparatus with the outer cabinet omitted for clarity; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the apparatus of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the apparatus of Fig.l; Fig. 4 is a top plan view corresponding to Fig. 3 with the outer cabinet included; Fig. 5 is a front elevation corresponding to Fig. 1 with the outer cabinet included; and Fig. 6 is a side elevation corresponding to Fig. 2 with the outer cabinet included.
Referring to the drawings one embodiment of cask cleaning apparatus comprises a support frame 7 on which a cask support turntable 12 is mounted through a bearing support plate 13. A turntable drive motor 10 is mounted on a bracket 11 on the support frame 7 and drives the turntable 12 through a pulley and belt arrangement 14. An upper clamp 16 and a lower clamp 17 are provided on the turntable 12 for retaining casks in position.
A drive motor 5 is provided with a cleaning brush 6 and is attached to a support shaft 2 by a bracket 4. The shaft 2 is slidably mounted on a mounting plate 8 through sliding bushes 15. The mounting plate 8 is mounted on the support frame 7 and is provided with an adjuster 18.
An air cylinder 3 is also mounted on the mounting bracket 8 and operates the support shaft 2 through a connector 1.
This basic arrangement of the apparatus is shown in Figs 1 to 3 in which, for clarity; the outer cover of the machine has been omitted.
Referring now to Figs 4 to 6 the apparatus is shown with the outer cover in position. The cover comprises a generally cuboidal cabinet 19 which has a pair of access doors 20 to allow loading of casks. A further, smaller cabinet 21 covers the drive motor 10. A control panel 22 is mounted on the side of the cabinet 19 and a viewing panel 23 allows the interior of the cabinet 19 to be viewed from outside. A pair of outlet pipes 24, on the side of the cabinet 19 provide a connection point for 'dust extraction apparatus, not shown, and an inlet pipe 25 on the top of the cabinet 19 allows air to enter the cabinet 19 to replace air being extracted through the pipes 24.
The apparatus is used to remove the internal charring from casks which are used in the distilling industry and can handle a range of different cask sizes.
In use a cask to be cleaned is inserted in the cabinet 19 and placed on the turntable 12 where it is clamped in position by the upper and lower clamps 16 & 17. The doors 20 of the cabinet 19 are then closed and the apparatus is brought into operation. The drive motor 10 operates, to rotate the turntable 12; and the cleaning brush 6, driven by the motor 5, is fed drown the inside of the cask by operation of the air cylinder 3 which moves the support shaft 2. The cleaning brush 6 maintains a constant pressure against the cask wall under the influence of a small air cylinder, (not illustrated) fitted within the bracket 4. The cleaning brush 6 gradually moves down the cask as it rotates to clean the whole internal surface of the cask. When the cleaning operation is completed the cleaning brush 6 is automatically returned to the start position and the apparatus then switches off automatically. The doors 20 which are fitted with a time delay switch are then opened and the cask may be removed.
A retractable suction hose is provided fitted as near as possible to the cleaning brush 6 and the suction pipes 24 are used to draw off the dust produced in the cleaning operation.
The position of the drive motor 5 and cleaning brush 6 can be adjusted to suit different cask sizes.
Modifications and improvements may be incorporated without departing from the scope of the invention.
For example the method of supporting and driving the cask can be altered. The casX may be free running on rollers instead of on a driven turntable and the rotation of the casK may then be produced by an external drive.
