Abstract
A reciprocating air compressor adapted to be mounted on and driven by a vehicle engine through a drive mechanism such as a gear train or pair, that normally includes backlash and is connected for driving the compressor crankshaft by a uni-directional transmission, preferably a one-way clutch 26. The clutch frees the engine driven gear train from the necessity to transmit torques of alternating sense and hence eliminates noise due to rattling within the limits of gear backlash. <IMAGE>
Description
ENGINE MOUNTED AIR COMPRESSORS
This invention relates to apparatus for driving a compressor, more particularly a reciprocating air compressor.
On heavy goods road vehicles it is customary for the vehicle air braking system to be supplied with compressed air by a reciprocating compressor mounted on, and driven by, the vehicle's engine. It is also common for the crankshaft of the compressor to be driven from the engines crankshaft through a train, or pair, of gears.
Inherent in the behaviour of a reciprocating air compressor with self-operating valves, is a reversal of rotational reaction torque on the compressor crankshaft as the compressor piston passes upper-deadcentre. As any simple gear drive system will always involve a degree of backlash between mating pairs of gears, this feature of the compressor's behaviour means that the direction of the backlash will be reversed as the compressor piston passes upper-deadcentre and the gears will only resume their previous positions relative to one another as the compressor drive torque again becomes positioned at the start of the compression stroke. Therefore, the drive gears will move relatively to each other within their backlash limit twice per revolution of the compressor.
This relative motion causes a mechanical rattling noise to be emitted from the gear naive train because of he characteristics of the compressor.
An object of the present invention is to prevent or greatly reduce, this noise generation.
According to the present invention we propose the combination of a reciprocating compressor having an input drive shaft, a drive mechanism connected, or for connection to, a source of motive power, and a uni-directional transmission device connected between the drive mechanism and the input shaft.
The transmission device is preferably interposed between the final drive gear to the compressor and the compressor crankshaft, and may comprise a one-way clutch, "sprag" roller bearing or simple ratchet.
One embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing.
The compressor shown in the drawing is a single cylinder reciprocating air compressor and has a housing 10 adapted for mounting on a vehicle engine block (not shown). It has a piston 12 working in a cylinder 14 and connected by a piston rod 16 to the compressor crankshaft 18 mounted in bearings 20 in the compressor housing 10. One end of the shaft 18 protrudes from the housing 10 to provide an input shaft driven by an input drive mechanism 21 which in turn is driven by the engine. The drawing shows only the final drive gear 22 of a gear train or pair from the engine shaft.
The final drive gear 22 is mounted on the input shaft end by means of a bolt 24 and is linked with the shaft by a one-way clutch 26 such as is well known per se to those skilled in the art therefore, it is not described in detail. The clutch 24 is so arranged that in the normal direction of rotation of the compressor crankshaft, the drive is transmitted rigidly and positively to the compressor while the latter is providing a reaction torque in opposition to the drive torque. However, when the piston passes upper-deadcentre and the reaction torque becomes negative (i.e. in a sense to assist normal rotation of the compressor crankshaft) the device then allows the compressor crankshaft to accelerate away from its driven gear without transmitting the reverse torque to that gear.
Later on in the rotation cycle of the compressor crankshaft, its speed eventually falls to that of the driven gear and the device automatically takes up the drive once more from the engine gear train to the compressor. By the use of the one-way cluth 24 of any other uni-directional transmission device, the engine-driven gear train is freed from the necessity to transmit torques of alternating sense and will not, therefore, generate more noise due to rattling within the limit of gear backlash.
The invention is applicable to all situations in which the drive mechanism includes backlash or lost motion and it will therefore be understood that the invention is not restricted to a compressor driven by a gear train as in the illustrated embodiment. The drive meceis may be, for example, a chain and sprocket drive.
Although the illustrated embodiment refers to a single cylinder compressor, it will be understood that the invention is applicable also to compressors having two or more cylinders.
