Abstract

There is disclosed a roll (14) of adhesive tape (10) comprising a substrate (11) and adhesive coating (12). The coating is discontinuous to provide bands (17) of uncoated substrate between coated sections (16). Tear lines may be provided across the uncoated bands. <IMAGE>

Description

ADHESIVE TAPE This invention concerns rolls of adhesive tape of the kind (hereinafter termed of the kind referred to) comprising a substrate carrying a contact adhesive on one face thereof.
Examples of adhesive tape of the kind referred to are general purpose tapes such as those marketed under the name Sellotape (Registered Trade Mark) and more specialised tapes such as electrical insulating tape, masking tape and adhesive bandages for securement of wound dressings.
A problem with adhesive tapes of the kind referred to unless drawn for use from purpose made dispensing units is 'loss' of the tape end which becomes adhered to the underlying roll, requiring its location and freeing often accompanied with damage to the tape end from the roll before further tape can be used, both operations which can be notoriously difficult particularly with tapes having thin substrates.
A further problem with adhesive tapes of the kind referred to is the facility to separate the desired length from the roll, squarly and without damage to the tape length or the tape remaining on the reel.
It is an object of the present invention to provides rolls of adhesive tape which overcome the problem aforesaid.
According to the present invention there is provided a roll of adhesive tape of the kind referred to characterised in that the adhesive is discontinuous along the length of the tape to provide sections of substrate coated with adhesive separated by bands of uncoated substrate.
The coated sections may be of equal length.
A tear line defined by perforations may be provided across the tape in each said uncoated band.
The tear line may be closely adjacent the trailing edge of each coated section.
Two tear lines may be provided across the tape in each said uncoated band lying closely adjacent the trailing edge of one coated section and the leading edge of the adjacent coated section respectively.
The tear lines adjacent the trailing edges of the coated sections may be more readily rupturable than those adjacent the leading edges of the coated sections.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to the several figures of the accompanying drawings which show, by way of example only, two embodiments thereof.
Of the drawings : Figure 1 shows a side elevation of a roll of adhesive tape; Figure 2 shows a plan view of the tape from the roll of a first embodiment; and Figure 3 shows a plan view of the tape from the roll of a second embodiment.
Referring now the the drawings it will be seen that adhesive tape 10 comprising a substrate 11 carrying contact adhesive 12 (indicated by cross-hatching in Figure 2 and 3) may be drawn from a supply in the form of a roll 14 wound on a central spool 15 (see Figure 1).
In each of the embodiments the coating of adhesive 12 is discontinuous along the length of the substrate 11 to provide sections 16 coated with adhesive 12 and separated by bands 17 of uncoated substrate.
In the first embodiment (see Figure 2) a tear line 18 defined by perforations extends across the tape in each band 17 and lies adjacent the trailing edge of the section 16 lying on the side of the band nearer the outer end of the tape.
In use whenever a section 16 of tape is torn from the end of the tape 10 the residual tail of the tape termintes with an uncoated band 17 ensuring that the end of the tape cannot be 'lost' by adhesion with the surface of the roll 14.
The second embodiment (see Figure 3) is similar to the first, like parts being numbered with like reference numerals.
In this embodiment, however, an additional tear line 20 is provided across the tape in each band 17 and lies adjacent the leading edge of the section 16 lying on the side of the band nearer the inner end of the tape.
The tear lines 18 are more readily rupturable than those 20 to ensure, as before, that whenever a section 16 is torn from the tape the residual tail terminates with an uncoated band 17.
The tear lines 20 have sufficient strength to ensure that pulling the terminated band 17 will release the next section 16 from the roll. The leading band 17 on each section 16 may be removed by tearing the line 20.
Generally the lengths of the sections 16 will be constant and it is envisaged that users will stock different rolls 14 of differing lengths of section 16 suited for their purposes It will be appreciated that Figures 1, 2, and 3 show the relative patterns and configuarations of the adhesive sections 16, uncoated substrate sections 17 and tear perforations 18 and 20.
In use only leading band 17 will be gripped and pulled and the adhesive section 16 will peel from the roll until perforations 18 are reached whereupon further tension will tear these giving the length of adhesive tape required and an adhesive free tab on the leading edges of the roll.
In the second embodiment this tab 17 may also be removed by tearing once the separate adhesive strip has been firmly placed with position of use.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof.
