Abstract
A pad of adhesive tape consists of strips of adhesive tape 11 laid layer upon layer on a common inert base layer 10. The adhesive layer 12 is discontinuous along the length of the strip, thus providing an uncoated tab 17 with which to grip and peel-off each adhesive strip as required for use. The pad may comprise a number of strips 16 in-line lying along the length of the tape which can each be peeled from the pad separately. A line of perforations 18, just beyond the adhesive layer, will rupture with the pull and the strip will be set free for use. Also, there will be released another free tab 17 for gripping and removing the next strip 16, when required. Each of the tabs in this multi-strip pad may have perforations 19 adjacent to the adhesive layer which will allow the tab to be removed when the strip has been applied to a surface. The tape removal perforations 18 will be such as to produce a weak rupture line, the tab removal perforations 19 will be such as to produce a strong rupture line. <IMAGE>
Description
ADHESIVE TAPE PAD
This invention concerns pads of adhesive tape of the kind (hereinafter termed of the kind referred to) comprising a substrate carrying a contact adhesive on one face thereof.
A pad as used here is defined as a number of sheets or strips of adhesive tape laid layer upon layer on a common inert base layer.
According to the present invent ion there is provided a pad of adhesive tape of the kind referred lo,characterised in thl the adhesive is discontinuous along the length of the tape to provide a section of substrate coated with adhesive adjacent to a band of uncoated substrate.
Examples of adhesive tape of the kind referred to are usually formed on rolls not pads. The are the general purpose tapes such as those marketed under the name Sellotape (Registered Trade Mark) and more specialised tapes such as electrical insulating tape.plastic insulating tape as used in the gas and water industries, masking tape as used in the car trade and adhesive tape bandages for the securement of wound dressings.
A problem with adhesive tapes of the kind referred to unless drawn for use from purpose made dispensing units is 'loss' of the tape-end which becomes adhered to the underlying roll, requiring its location and freeing often accompanied with damage to the tape end and the roll before further tape can be used, both are operations which can be notoriously difficult particularly with tapes having thin substrates.
A further problem with adhesive tapes of the kind referred to is the facility to separate the desired length from the roll, squarely and without damage to the tape length or the tape remaining on the reel.
It is an object of the present invention to provide pads of adhesive tape which overcome the aforesaid problems.
According to the present invention there is provided a pad of adhesive tape of the kind referred to characterised in that the grip edge or leading edge of each strip on the pad has a short length of substrate which is not coated with adhesive This uncoated base substrate provides an easily grippable tab with which to pull and peel the adhesive tape from the remaining pad.
A tear line defined by perforations may be provided in each uncoated band close to the adhesive band This will facilitate the removal of the tab,if require.
Drawings Figure 1 shows a plan view and a side elevation of one such single strip pad.Fig la without perforations and Fig lb with perforations. Figure la diagrammatically shows a base (10) with a pad of adhesive strips (11) attached to it by the adhesive coating (12).
The adhesive layer does not cover the whole length of the strip, but terminates at (13) leaving a short length of uncoated substrate which we will call a tah (l4! with which to grip, pull and peel an adhesive strip from the pad for use.
Figure lb shows a similar pad.but additionally there is a line of perforations ( (l) in the substrate adjacent to the adhesive layer. In use this 5 line of perforations will not rupture en peeling the strip from the pad but it can be ruptured With a careful shearing force when the strip has been attached to its intended location. This results in a neatly finished product without protrusions when used for example on a parcel,a cable,or a wound.
The pad can consist of an convenient number of layers of adhesive tape. These strips of tape can be any desired length, the free length of tile tape we call the tab can also be of ans convenient length.
Furthermore an adhesive tape pad mas consist of a multiple layer of adhesive strips where each strip consists of a number of adhesive layers and tabs set alternately along the length of the strip Adjacent to the back edge of each adhesive layer and just within the uncoated substrate tab are a line of perforations of an easily ruptureable kind. These perforations rupture when the tab is being pulled and the tape is being peeled from the underlying pad The rupture leaves one with a perfectly cut piece of useab]e adhesive tape of the length desired and a free tab at the leading edge of the tape still on the pad.
Figure 2a shows a plan view and side elevation of one such pad in which there are three removeable strips of adhesive tape (16) per length of the pad.
the rupture perforations are shown at (18).The tabs (l) in this case are not removeable.Figure 2b shows a plan view and side elevation of a similar three strip (16) pad in which widely spaced perforations in the substrate of the tab (19)just before the start of the adhesive layer allow the tab (17) to be removed once the tape has been attached to its location.
These multi-strip pads can be of any convenient length and any number of removeable strips per length.
Single strip and multi-strip pads of adhesive tape of a wide variety of adhesive strip length and tape width will be manufactured and stocked for a wide variety of uses, but in all cases the user can purchase the length and width most efficient and suitable for his o her purpose There should be no waste due to damaged ends of tape, tangled tape scored reels or inconsistant and badly cut lengths Houerertthe ease and convenience of use because of the free uncoated leading edge tab (fixed or removeable) and the.
back edge ruptureable perforations make this an invention which mill be welcomed by all of tic public at large. lndustry and Commerce who use vast quantities of adhesive tapes for work mainly of a repetitive nature will gain in saving time and waste by ordering their pads of adhesive tape specifically to size.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above examples only many such as might occur to one skilled in the art, being possible without departing from the scope thereof.
