Description
A TOOL.
The present invention relates to a tool and particularly but not exclusively to a gardening tool which can be used by both the amateur and professional gardener for removing tweeds and replacing with grass the area from lrSlich the feeds have been removed.
According to the present invention there is provided a tool comprising a tubular member having a lover portion adapted to penetrate the ground, an upper portion provided with an opening in the wall thereof for ejection of matter received in the lower portion fron penetration of the ground, and a handle mounted to the tubular member.
The upper portion of the tubular member may have its longitudinal axis coincident with the longitudinal axis of the lower portion and have a greater external diameter.
rne opening in the wall of the upper portion may extend along a major part of the length of the upper portion.
The upper portion may have an upper end provided with a flange which provides an annular lip around the upper portion.
The tool may comprise a transversely projecting extension fixed to the upper portion, the outer end of the extension comprising a hollolf part which receives a lower end of the handle.
The present invention trill now be described by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shorts a side view of an embodiment of a tool according to tie present invention, and
Figure 2 shows a vie of the tool taken along line X in Figure 1.
The gardening tool showy in the drawing comprises a tubular member 1 having a lower portion 2 adapted to penetrate the ground and an upper portion 3 provided with an opening 4 in its wall. The upper portion 3 has its longitudinal asis coincident 4th the longitudinal axis of the leer portion 2 and has an external diameter D which is greater titan the external diameter d of the loser portion.
The upper end of the upper portion 3 is provided with a flange 5 providing an annular lip 5 around the upper portion 3.
Fixed to the upper portion 3 by for example spot welding is an extension 7 which projects transversely from the tubular member 1. The outer end of the extension 7 is formed into a tube 8 and the lower end of a handle 9 in the form of for example a timber pole or thin walled tube is received within the tube 8.
In order to remove weeds from a lawn and replace the deweeded area with grass the lower portion 2 of the tubular member 1 is placed over a weed to be removed and downward pressure from the operator's foot is exerted on the flange 5 whilst the upper end (not shown) of the handle is being held until the lower portion has penetrated the ground to the level of the lower end of the upper portion 3 at which time the increased resistance will be felt as a result of the greater external diameter of the upper portion 3.
The lower portion 2 is then pulled out of the ground together with the weed which is now inside the lower portion 2 and the penetration and withdrawal operations repeated.
As weeds are removed from the ground the preceding plug of soil containing the weed passes upwardly into the upper portion 3 and falls through opening 4. After the required number of weeds have been removed the lower portion 2 of the tubular member is made to penetrate an area of weed-free grass and then withdralrn together with the plug of weed-free grass. This operation is repeated in the same manner as described above in respect the removing weeds. The plugs of grass which fall through the opening 4 are then inserted in the hole left by the weeds and light pressure with the operator's foot provides an almost invisible repair to the lawn.
The above described embodiment enables deep rooted weeds to be removed from a lawn without causing significant damage to the lawn and a slightly damaged lawn to be repaired quickly. Also, since the tool is operated by the foot it can be used with ease by persons of small o light stature or persons lacking any special gardening experience.
Claims (5)
1. A tool comprising a tubular member having a lower portion
adapted to penetrate the ground, an upper portion provided
with an opening in the wall thereof for ejection of matter
received in the lower portion from penetration of the
ground, and a handle mounted to the tubular member.
2. A tool according to Claim 1, wherein the upper portion of
the tubular member has its longitudinal axis coincident
with longitudinal axis of the lower portion and has a
greater external diameter.
3. A tool according to Claim 1 or Claim 2, wherein the opening
in the wall of the upper portion extends along a major part
of the length of the upper portion.
4. A tool according to any one of the preceding claims,
wherein the upper portion has an upper end provided with a
flange which provides an annular lip around the upper
portion.
5. A tool according to any one of the preceding claims,
wherein there is provided a transversely extending
projecting extension fixed to the upper portion the outer
end of the extension comprising a hollow part which
receives a lower end of the handle.
