Abstract

A device for forming a hair rig where a bait 14 is tied by a length of line 16 to a position adjacent a hook comprises an annular member 10 with an extension projecting radially outwardly. The extension is split along its length to form two legs 11 and includes a notch 12 on each leg for holding a line in position across two holes or depressions 13 formed in the legs which facilitate feeding the hook through the line so that the line may be tied adjacent the hook. <IMAGE>

Description

FISHING RIG This invention relates to a fishing rig known as a hair rig.
A hair rig is a method of presenting a bait to a fish without the obvious presence of a hook. The spherical bait usually used is tied to a length of line which is then tied to the hook, the bait being spaced from the hook. The fish when mouthing the bait does not feel the hook and sucks in the hook with the bait.
At present this rig is tied by hand and this is very time consuming. It is an object of the present invention to obviate this drawback.
According to the present invention there is provided a device consisting of an annular ring with an extension projecting radially outward from the ring and being split along its length to form two legs, means being provided on the two legs for holding a line in position across two holes or depressions formed in the legs which facilitate feeding the hook through the line.
Preferably the device is of unitary construction and is formed of plastics material, Preferably the means for holding the line comprises a notch in that surface of each leg normal to a plane containing the device.
Preferably the notches are at or adjacent the junction of the annular ring and radial legs.
Preferably the holes or depressions are adjacent the notches in a surface of the legs normal to that containing the notches.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing in which : Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2.1 and 2.2 illustrate how the bait is fastened to the line; Fig. 3.1 and 3.2 illustrate how the bait is threaded on to the device ready for attachment of the hook; Fig. 4.1 and 4.2 illustrate how the line and bait are attached to the hook; and Fig. 5 illustrates the finished hair rig.
Referring to the drawings, the device for forming the hair rig comprises a unitary plastics ring 10 of split construction the split being defined by two radially extending legs 11 tapering outwardly from the annular ring 10. Each of these legs 11 on its exterior surface normal to the plane containing the device is notched as indicated at 12, the notches being located at or adjacent the junction of the annular ring 10 and the radially extending legs 11.
One surface of each leg 11, namely the upper surface in use, is, adjacent the notch 12 formed with a recess, depression or hole 13 for the purpose hereinafter referred to.
The ball bait is indicated at 14 and is traversed by a diametral hole 15 through which a closed loop of line 16 is threaded as indicated at Fig. 2.1, one end of the loop of line then being threaded through the other end to provide the ball bait arrangement as shown in Fig. 2.2.
To form the hair rig the line loop 16 is threaded over the legs as shown in Fig. 3.1 so that the loop engages in the notches 16 and also is held between the legs 11 with the ball bait 14 suspended below the legs 11 (see Fig. 3.2).
The looped line thus overlies the recesses, depressions or holes 13 as can again clearly be seen in Fig. 3.2.
A fishing hook 17, already attached to a casting line 18 is passed under one of the loop portions overlying the recesses, depressions or holes 13, the latter facilitating passage of the hook under the loop portion.
The hook is then passed under the other loop portion in the opposite direction as can be seen in Fig. 4.2 to secure the ball bait 14 via the looped line 16 to the hook 17.
The looped line 16 with ball bait 14 is then removed from the device, the axial split between the legs facilitating this and the finished hair rig as indicated in Fig. 5 is ready for use.

Claims (7)

1. A device for forming a hair rig where a bait is tied by a length of line to a position adjacent a hook, the device comprising an elongate body having a projection at one end for insertion through a loop in the line to which the bait is attached, an enlarged portion where the body is split into two legs to receive the tied bait therebetween and means on the two legs for holding the line in a position where the hook can be passed through the line to tie the line and bait adjacent the hook.
2. A device for forming a hair rig comprising an annular ring which an extension projecting radially outward from the ring and being split along its length to form two iegs, means being provided on the two legs for holding a line in position across two holes or depressions formed in the legs which facilitate feeding the hook through the line.
3. A device according to Claim 1 or 2 of unitory eonstructio formed of plastics material.
4. A device according to any of Claims 1 to 3 wherein the means for holding the line comprises a notch in each leg.
5. A device according to Claim 2 wherein the means for holding the line comprises a notch in each leg at or adjacent the junction of the annular ring and the legs.
6. A device according to Claim 5 wherein the holes or depressions are adjacent the notches in a surface of the lgs normal to that containing the notches.
7. A device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
