Abstract
A fishing cast carries clip devices (8) each of which is formed from a body portion (9) having spaced apertures located in lugs (10) through which the line (2) may freely pass. The apertures allow the clip to freely slide along the line at least within the constraints defined by the abutments (7 and 6) in the case of the uppermost clip shown. The clip has a stub portion (11) coextensive with the body and over which a rubber sleeve (12) may be positioned in order to trap the trace line (2) frictionally against the body of the clip at least in the case of the lowermost clip shown. The clip further has a hook portion (13) and as shown this is designed to engage the bait hook (4) so that when the cast line (2) is in tension the clip (8) may be slid down the line so as to pull the trace line (3) into tension at which point the swivel (5) engages the lug (10) and thus abutment (7). The lowermost hook is held in this position by means of the rubber sleeve (12). On impact with water following a cast the bait hooks release through the line becoming slack. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Angler's tackle
This invention relates to angler's tackle and is concerned with a means for retaining the bait hooks in a fixed position during the casting operation. The invention is principally for use in angling from a beach or shore using a sinker weight and plurality of hooks each on individual lines attached to the main cast assembly.
Because of the distance involved in casting it often happens that bait becomes detached during the initial cast due to forces involved during the throw. This invention seeks to provide a means for retaining a bait hook in a fixed position during the cast but which allows release on impact with the water. The invention also provides a cast assembly wherein the or each separate hook may be retained in position during casting.
According to this invention there is provided a means for retaining a bait hook with a trace in position on a cast, the means comprising a clip with an elongate body and apertures therein to receive the line forming the cast, the clip being slidable along the line and engageable therewith, a hook shaped lateral extension projecting from one end of the body. Preferably a stub is provided coextensive with the body and, in use, lying in parallel juxtaposed relationship to the cast line.
The stub preferably includes a cylindrical rubber sleeve to trap the line against the stub to form a frictional connection between the line and clip.
This invention also provides a cast assembly comprising a cast line, one end being adapted to receive a sinker weight, the other end being for connection or connected with the rod line, a trace line carrying a bait hook and slidably engaging the cast line on a section thereof between two spaced abutments, a first clip having a hook on an elongate body with two spaced apertures slidable on the said section of cast line between the apertures, a second clip on the cast line below said section and positionable to engage the hook of the clip with the bait hook, said clip being frictionally engaged with the cast line, and optionally a further trace positioned above the first and of which the bait hook is engagable with the hook of the first clip.
The invention is further explained by reference to the accompanying drawings showing the embodiments by way of example only. In the drawings:
Figure 1 shows a cast assembly incorporating the clip devices of this invention, and
Figures 2 to 5 show
modifications of the clip device.
Referring firstly to Figure 1 this shows the end portion of a fishing cast incorporating a sinker weight 1 a cast line 2 and at least one but preferably more individual trace lines 3 each having a bait hook 4 at one end and a swivel 5 at the other end connecting the trace line to the cast line. The swivel connects with the cast line between two spaced abutments 6 and 7 which are defined by suitable knots or other means secured to the line so that the swivel will only slide therealong over a limited distance.
The cast line also carries clip devices 8 each of which is formed from a body portion 9 having spaced apertures located in lugs 10 through which the line 2 may freely pass. The apertures allow the clip to freely slide along the line at least within the constraints defined by the abutments 7 and 6 in the case of the uppermost clip shown. The clip has a stub portion 11 coextensive with the body and over which a rubber sleeve 12 may be positioned in order to trap the trace line 2 frictionally against the body of the clip at least in the case of the lowermost clip shown. The clip further has a hook portion 13 and as shown this is designed to engage the bait hook 4 so that when the cast line 2 is in tension the clip 8 may be slid down the line so as to pull the trace line 3 into tension at which point the swivel 5 engages the lug 10 and thus abutment 7.The lowermost hook is held in this position by means of the rubber sleeve 12.
The swivel 5 engages between the two lugs 10 of the next hook up in the cascaded arrangement and as may be seen this hook is also pulled firmly down against the abutment 7 by virtue of the swivel 5. This next clip up engages the bait hook 4 of the trace along the cast line and if more bait hooks are provided on further individual traces these will each be associated with a further clip arranged in the manner as illustrated.
As shown in Figure 1 the assembly is ready for casting and during this action the clip 8 positively engage and hold the bait hooks 4 in position so that they do not fly about during the casting action and thereby cause the bait to become detached.
On impact with the water surface the cast line 2 will either become slack so next clip along allows the bait hook 4 to release from the lowermost clip whereupon the uppermost clip is free to move along the section of line between abutments 6 and 7 to thereby release the next hook along. A further release action is obtained by means of the frictional engagement through the sleeve 12 and here again on impact with the water there is a tendency for the lowermost clip to slide along the bottom section of cast line to achieve the same releasing effect.
As may be appreciated from the drawing on impact with the water there is a cascading effect along the section of cast line so that all the traces with their respective bait hooks will release, this being assisted by the fact that the uppermost retaining clips are thereafter free to slide along the section of line between the abutments.
Figure 2 shows a modification wherein a stub portion 20 is provided on the end of the clip 21 which is adjacent the hook 22. Here again a rubber sleeve 23 is provided to trap the stub 20 against the cast line 24 to provide the necessary frictional engagement when used as the lowermost clip retaining element.
In Figure 3 the construction is generally similar but the cast line 2 in this instance passes through a central boring provided down the body 8 of the clip. In this embodiment the actual body 8 of the clip serves to retain the trace swivel 5 and this may be provided as a complete assembly.
Figure 4 shows a different method of achieving frictional engagement at the lowermost clip by wrapping the trace line 2 around the body 8 of the clip one or more times.
The clips may be constructed from a moulded plastics material and both the lowermost clip which frictionally engages the line and the uppermost clips can be of identical construction.
As may be appreciated any number of hooks can be used and once the lowermost hook has been released all the remaining hooks must then slide free.
As shown in Figures 1 and 2 the respective stub parts 11 and 20 may be parallel sided or tapered as shown.
Figure 5 shows a modified device which is made from a one piece plastics moulding. The principle is similar to that of the embodiments described previously and like references have been used.
