Description
SPECIFICATION
Improvements in extrusion profiles
The invention relates to extrusion profiles for use in sliding windows and doors, particularly patio doors.
There have been several proposals for patio doors with frames of plastics materials, but these have generally had problems associated with over complicated extrusions or inconsistent functioning.
According to the invention, there is provided a multi-function extrusion for use in a frame of a horizontally sliding window or door, beneath or above the window or door, or in a vertical position, the extrusion comprising a base portion, an edge flange extending from the base portion at or adjacent one longitudinal edge of the base portion, support means adapted to support wheel runner means, which support means has an outwardly facing surface on each longitudinal side thereof, each surface being for cooperation with an elongate seal on the associated door or window, the edge flange supporting, in use, an elongate seal adapted to engage the door or window adjacent the base thereof, where the extrusion lies beneath the door or window, adjacent the top thereof, where the extrusion lies above the door or window, or at a vertical edge thereof, if the extrusion is in a vertical position.
The extrusion may further comprise a second edge flange extending from the base portion at or adjacent the longitudinal edge of the base portion on the side of the support means remote from said one longitudinal edge, the second edge flange supporting, in use, an elongate seal adapted to engage the door or window.
The first edge flange preferably lies inside the window or door relative to a wall or the like around the frame, in use, and the second edge flange preferably lies outside the window or door. The seals on the two edge flanges preferably face one another such that the door or window slides between the two seals.
The profile may be made with or without the second edge flange but using the same extruder simply by cutting off the second edge flange after extrusion.
The support means adapted to support the wheel runner means preferably comprises a channel lying between said outwardly facing surfaces. The channel preferably has ribbed inside side wall surfaces to facilitate frictional engagement of a runner bead in the channel.
The support means may also serve to support a keeper for a lock when the profile is used in a vertical position on the locking side of the frame.
The first edge flange may include means for mounting a seal or bead on the side thereqf remote from the support means for sealing against glass of a fixed window or door panel.
By way of example, one embodiment of a sliding door according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of an extrusion according to the invention;
Figure 2 is a sectional side view of a door threshold; and
Figure 3 is a sectional view of a locking region of the door.
Figure 1 shows in side view a multi-function extrusion for use in a frame of a sliding door or window, in this particular embodiment a sliding patio door. The extrusion, generally indicated at 10 is of polymeric material, for example polyvinyl chloride.
The extrusion 10 includes a base portion 11 from which extends a series of short ribs 12 to support the base portion 11 on or against part of the door frame. From the base portion 11 extend two edge flanges 13, 14 and a central support means in the form of flanges 15 and 16 defining a channel 17 therebetween.
The first edge flange 13 has an inwardly facing slot 18 adapted to support a seal, and an outwardly facing slot 19 also adapted to support a seal.
The second edge flange 14 includes a slot 20 facing inwardly and adapted to support a seal.
Internal surfaces of the flanges 15 and 16 are ribbed to assist frictional engagement with a wheel runner supporting bead which will be described and shown in Figure 2. The flanges 15 and 16 also serve to support a lock keeper which will be described and shown in
Figure 3.
Figure 1 shows the complete extrusion profile 10 but the profile may be formed without the second edge flange 14, simply by cutting off the second edge flange 14 with the edge of the extrusion 10 terminating along the line 21 in Figure 1. It is in this form in which the extrusion 10 is used beneath a door, as shown in Figure 2.
Figure 2 shows a threshold of a door, the threshold being represented by a single plastics extrusion, again conveniently of polyvinyl chloride, 30. The extrusion 30 has a downwardly sloping portion 31 on which the extrusion 10 without the second edge flange 14 is secured. The extrusion 30 is provided with a rigid reinforcement tube, conveniently of a metal such as aluminium, 32 and, in use, the extrusion 30 is supported on a base conveniently of brickwork or concrete. The extrusion 30 has an abutment flange 33 and support channels 34 and 35 adapted to support with a snap fit glazing bead supports 36 and 37 respectively which fit in the channels 34 and 35 with a snap fit. The abutment flange 33 includes a seal or sealing bead support slot 38 which can be used for direct glazing if desired.
The extrusion profile 10 without the edge flange 14 has the features previously described with reference to Figure 1 and in use beneath a sliding window or door supports a wheel runner supporting bead 40, conveniently of stainless steel but possibly of other suitable materials, the bead 40 in turn supporting and locating a wheet runner 41 of a metal such as stainless steel. A wheel 42 is shown in Figure 2 running on the runner 41.
In Figure 2 above the extrusion profile 10 is shown a base extrusion 50 of a sliding door panel itself. The extrusion 50 has mounted on it wheels 42 on which the door runs. A sealed double glazing unit 51 is shown glazed in position using a snap fit element 52 similar to the glazing bead supports 36 and 37 already described for supporting a sealed double glazed unit 53 which is not movable. A metal reinforcement 54 is included in the extrusion 50.
In order to effect a seal between the moving door extrusion 50 and the extrusion profile 10, seals, in this case elongate brush seals 60, 61 and 62 are provided, seals 60 and 61 being optional. The brush seals 60 and 61, if fitted, are mounted in inwardly opening slots in the extrusion 50 of the door and cooperate sealingly with outer surfaces of the flanges 15 and 16 of the extrusion profile 10. Main sealing is effected by the elongate brush seal 62 which is mounted in the slot 18 of the extrusion profile 10 and cooperates with an interior surface of the extrusion 50 of the door. With all three seals used, there are three seals beyond which air must pass if the building interior is to be reached by a draught from outside.
It is envisaged that the fixed double glazed unit 53 might be replaced by a double glazed unit glazed directly between beads supported in the slots 33 in the extrusion 30 and 19 in the extrusion profile 10.
Figure 3 illustrates a locking jamb of the patio door and again utilises the multi-function extrusion profile 10.
As was the case in Figure 2, the sealed double glazed unit 51 of the sliding door is glazed in another section of the extrusion 50 to which are secured handles 70, 71. Beneath the handle 70 can be seen a floor plate 72.
The multi-function extrusion profile 10 is secured to a jamb extrusion 73 and, optionally, elongate brush seals 74 and 75 are mounted in the slots 1#8 and 20 respectively. In this way, the multi-function extrusion profile 10 provides with the brush seals 74 and 75 female seals engaged by the outer surfaces of the extrusion 50. In the same way as described with reference to Figure 2, the extrusion 50 includes inwardly facing brush seals 76 and 77 which seal against outer surfaces of the flanges 15 and 16 respectively. If the optional seals 74 and 75 are included, four seals are provided between the inside and the outside of the door.
The extrusion 50 supports at a convenient height a lock 80 including a movable locking member 81. The locking member 81 is movable by a key, lever or the like into and out of engagement with a keeper 82 secured to the flanges 15 and 16 of the multi-function profile extrusion 10.
The advantages of the embodiment of a multi-function extrusion profile are that both male and female sealing arrangements can be provided and that the profile, in one extrusion, gives the possibility of eliminating the second edge flange. Thus there is a flexibility in the production of the multi-function extrusion profile with a minimum of tooling cost.
This embodiment of a multi-function extrusion profile performs the following functions:
(a) it goes all around the frame, holding both fixed and movable sashes in place
(b) it holds the threshold/jamb closer in place
(c) it holds the track carrier
(d) it provides female sealing at the locking side
(e) it gives a mating surface for internal seals if these are used
(f) it has features enabling the locking of beads in place if fixed glazing is used.
It will be appreciated that the foregoing description has been by way of example only and that modifications and alterations may be made within the scope of the invention.
