Abstract

In a method of broadcasting map information a plurality of transmitters located in different regions and broadcasting on a number of different frequencies with adjacent transmitters broadcasting on different frequencies, broadcast map information relating to the particular region in which the transmitter is sited. A multiplicity of portable receivers are provided, each capable of receiving broadcasts from any of the transmitters and being able to automatically or manually to select reception from that transmitter in whose region the receiver is sited at a given time, and each receiver includes means for displaying a map generated from map information broadcast by the transmitter.

Description

SPECIFICATION Broadcasting of map information This invention relates to a method of broadcasting map information, and to a broadcasting system, a transmitter and a receiver suitable for use in such a method.
The traditional method for a motorist to navigate has involved consulting a printed map acquired prior to a journey. It has been proposed to provide various navigation systems in a car and in some of these it has been envisaged that a display should be provided showing a map. If, however, the navigation system is.programmed with map information concerning any area in which the motorist may navigate that will usually involve storing a vast amount of information in the navigation system. Furthermore, the information cannot readily be updated.
The present invention provides a method of broadcasting map information in which a plurality of transmitters, located in different regions and broadcasting on a number of different frequencies with adjacent transmitters broadcasting on different frequencies, broadcast map information relating to the particular region in which the transmitter is sited at least at regular and frequent intervals and in which a multiplicity of portable receivers are provided, each capable of receiving broadcasts from any of the transmitters and being able automatically or manually to select reception of that transmitter in whose region the receiver is sited at a given time, each receiver including means for displaying a map generated from map information broadcast by the transmitter.
Such a method of broadcasting enables a person having a suitable receiver to receive up-o-date information of the locality in which he is sited. Because the transmitter need only broadcast information relating to the region in which it is sited, much more detailed information of that region can be broadcast then would be the case if the same information were broadcast by each transmitter. Similarly, the display requirements of the receiver are reduced because the receiver has only to display a map restricted to one particular region.
The receiver can also readily provide a coarse indication of its location simply by identifying the transmitter from which it is receiving information.
Each transmitter may broadcast other information in addition to map information and that information may or may not be'of a regional nature. The other information could for example comprise details of restaurants or garages in the region.
The map information may be broadcast as part of an already existing broadcasting system. For example, the information may be part of the teletext information and the receiver may be a teletext receiver. Alternatively, the transmitters may be ones used in a portable telephone network.
Each receiver may provide a static display which may be a liquid crystal display and/or print-out from a printer which can print a map of all or part of the region in which the receiver is sited at that time. A print-out would enable a higher resolution to be obtained and therefore more detailed information to be given.
In addition to portable receivers, other fixed receivers may also be provided to receive the broadcast information.
Preferably the portable receivers switch automatically from receiving broadcasts from one transmitter to another adjacent transmitter as the receiver moves from one region to another. An alternative arrangement, however, would be for the receivers to be switchable manually.
The receiver may also be arranged to display its location on the map. In this case it would, of course, be necessary to provide a system to enable the receiver to determine its location. Such a system could be a triangulation system making use of the transmitters broadcasting the map information.
The map information is preferably broadcast continually so that a receiver can always display up-to-date information without any observable delay.
Since at least the main part of such map information is not subject to rapid change, it is possible for the map information to be broadcast using up only a very small part of the available transmission time, by broadcasting only portions of the information and updating information in any one continuous period of transmission. After a number of such periods in which different portions of the map information are broadcast, the receiver will have received and can display all the broadcast information.
The present invention also provides a broadcast system comprising a plurality of transmitters and a multiplicity of portable receivers, the transmitters and receivers being arranged for operation in a method of broadcasting map information as defined above.
By way of example on particular embodiment of the invention will now be described.
A broadcasting system for the United Kingdom includes a number of transmitters in different regions which broadcast a television signal incorporating teletext information. Adjacent transmitters broadcast at different frequencies. A multiplicity of portable receivers are provided in motor vehicles, these receivers being able to receive broadcasts at all the frequencies at which the various transmitters operate and being arranged automatically to tune to the transmission for the region in which the receiver is at that time sited. The receivers are arranged to display transmitted teletext in formation on a liquid crystal display.
The teletext information broadcast from each transmitter includes mapping information relating to the particular region in which the transmitter is cited. The receiver is able to display the mapping information in the form of one or more maps on the liquid crystal display.
A printer is connected to the receiver and is able to provide a print-out in the form of a detailed map of the area.
