Abstract

A friction holdable stand 2 comprising at least one elongate member 4 and at least one support means 6 extending transversely of the elongate member 4, at least one end portion 7 of the elongate member 4 being biased outwardly. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A stand This invention relates two a stand.
More especially, this invention provides a friction holdable stand.
The friction holdable stand may be such that it can be sited where desired in a room. Furthermore, the friction holdable stand may be effective to support articles with a saving of space.
The friction holdable stand may comprise at least one elongate member and at least one support means extending transversely of the elongate member, at least one end portion of the elongate member being biased outwardly.
The friction holdable stand may be such that there are one, two or more of the elongate members in any combination with one, two or more of the support means.
If desired, both end portions of the elongate member may be biased outwardly.
The or each end portion of the elongate member may be biased outwardly by a spring.
The spring is preferably a coil spring positioned inside the elongate member.
The friction holdable stand may include at least one extension member for increasing the length of the elongate member.
The or each extension member may fit between two separable portions of the elongate member.
The elongate member is preferably a cranked elongate member.
The elongate member may have a bottom portion formed by a single leg, or by a pair of legs. The pair of legs is preferably employed in order to give the friction holdable stand good stability.
The support means may be for supporting a television, and/or for supporting other audio and/or video electrical equipment. The support means may be, for example a table, a shelf or a bracket.
The elongate member may include a light positioned above the support means.
The elongate member may be provided at both of its end portions with rubber stop members.
The elongate member may be made of a metal. The support means may also be made of a metal. The elongate member and the support means will usually be made of a tubular metal.
The friction holdable stand can be positioned wherever desired in a room, and it will extend between the floor and the ceiling.
Thus, for example, the friction holdable stand may be positioned in the corner of a lounge or next to an armchair. The friction holdable stand may also be positioned in a bedroom, again in the corner of the bedroom or, for example, next to a bed.
Embodiments of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows a first friction holdable stand; Figure 2 shows a modification for the stand shown in Figure 1; Figure 3 shows a second friction holdable stand; Figure 4 shows a third friction holdable stand; Figure 5 is a front view of part of the friction holdable stand shown in Figure 4; Figure 6 shows a fourth friction holdable stand; Figure 7 is a front view of the stand shown in Figure 6; Figure 8 shows a fifth friction holdable stand; Figure 9 is a side view of the stand shown in Figure 8; Figure 10 shows a sixth friction holdable stand; Figure 11 is a front view of the stand shown in Figure 10; and Figure 12 is a side view of the stand shown in Figure 10.
Referring to Figure 1, there is shown a friction holdable stand 2 comprising an elongate member 4 and support means 6 which extends transversely of the elongate member 4.
As shown, the elongate member 4 is in three portions 7,8, 10. The top portion 7 is provided with biasing means in the form of a coil spring 12 which pushes a part 14 of the top portion 7 outwardly and into contact with a ceiling 16. A stop member 18 which may be of rubber or other material, engages the ceiling 16. A similar stop member 20 engages the floor 22.
It will be seen that the elongate member 4 is cran ed as shown so that the weight of, for example, a television (not shown) on the support means 6 has its centre of gravity positioned along the axis of the elongate member 4.
If the elongate member 4 is not normally long enough to extend between the ceiling 16 and the floor 22, then one or two extension members 24,26 may be employed.
The support means 6 is in the form of a Vshaped bracket as shown and it is bolted by bolts 28 to the centrai portion 8 of the elongate member 4.
The lower portion 10 of the elongate member 4 may also be provided with a spring coil if desired. The lower portion 10 would then normally have a part like the part 14 in the top portion 7.
Figure 2 shows part of an alternative extension member 26 which fits over a smaller diameter tube section 29. The tube section 29 is welded inside the portion 8 of ths elongate member 4 as shown.
Figure 3 shows an arrangement similar to Figure 1 except that the V-shaped support means 6 has been replaced by support means in the form of a table 30. A light 32 hangs from an arm 34. The light 32 is provided with electricity via a plug 36 and a lead 38. As shown, the lead 38 passes through the inside of the elongate member 4 and rubber grom mets (not shown) may be employed at the position where the lead 38 enters and leaves the- elongate member 4.
Figure 4 shows an arrangement similar to Figure 3 except that the arm 34 is curved and the light 32 is differently shaped than in Figure 3.
Figure 5 shows that in Figures 3 and 4 the bottom portion of the elongate member 4 is formed by a pair of legs 40,42. This is in contrast to the single leg employed in the elongate member 4 shown in Figure 1.
In Figures 6 and 7,iifferent legs 40,42 are shown. The use of a pair of legs 40,42 may be better than a single leg in order to stop possible swivelling of the friction holdable stand 2 when it is in use. Figures 6 and 7 also illustrate the use of extension members 43.
In Figures 8 and 9, a pair of elongate members 44,46 and a pair of support members in the form of shelves 48,49 are shown. Each elongate member 44,46 has a top portion 50 which is like the part 14 shown in Figure 1.
The elongate members 44,46 terminate in feet 52. A television 54 is shown on the shelf 48 and other electrical equipment 56 is shown on the shelf 49. The electrical equipment 56 may be video apparatus or a tape/disc player and tuner. The elongate members 44,46 are connected together by the shelves 48,49 and also by upper and lower struts 58,60 respectively. The shelves 48,49 are connected to the elongate members by brackets 62 as shown. The arrangement shown in Figures 8 and 9 thus serves as a double pole friction stand with two support means in the form of the shelves 48,49.
In Figures 10,11 and 12, similar parts as in Figures 8 and 9 have been given the same reference numerals for ease of understanding.
Thus, in Figures 10,11 and 12, a pair of elongate members 44,46 and a shelf 48 are shown. Each elongate member 44, 46 has a top portion 50 and a foot 64. The feet 64 are provided with caps 66. The shelf 48 is supported by two brackets 62. Each bracket 62 has portions 68,70 which are secured as shown to the elongate members 44,46. Each bracket 62 also has a flange 72 on which the shelf 48 is located. The shelf 48 supports three rail holders 74 and these rail holders 74 in turn support a rail 76. The rail 76 can be used as a clothes rail for supporting clothes on hangars. Thus the arrangement shown in Figures 10,11 and 12 serves as a twin pole friction stand for use as shelving and/or clothes hanging.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiments of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings have been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, different types of support means 6 may be employed than have been shown in the drawings. Also, the overall shape of the friction holdable stand 2 may be varied.
If desired, the friction holdable stand may be sold under the trade mark THE DADDY LONG-LEG.
