Abstract

Ground rolling apparatus comprises a roller 2 which is rotatably connected beneath a roller frame 3, a main frame 5 to which the roller frame is pivotally connected, carriage means 12 for the main frame and means for selectively moving the carriage means relative to the main frame between the ground engaging position in which the main frame is supported by a carriage means and a raised position in which the carriage means is raised out of contact with the ground. When the carriage means is raised the roller engages the ground for use in ground rolling, and with the carriage means in a ground engaging position the roller is raised out of contact with the ground, whereby the apparatus may travel without ground rolling action of the roller means. The apparatus avoids the need for loading a roller onto a trailer when transporting the roller from one site to another. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Improvements in or relating to apparatus for ground rolling This invention relates to apparatus for use in ground rolling and in particular but no exclusively to a towed vehicle for use in rolling grass.
It is known for ground rolling apparatus to comprise a roller which is towed in use behind a towing vehicle. A disadvantage of such rollers is that in order to convey the roller from one site to another the roller must be loaded on to a trailer or other suitable vehicle and must then be unloaded at the new site and connected to the towing vehicle ready for use.
According to the present invention there is disclosed apparatus for use in ground rolling in which the ground is selectively engageable either by roller means for use in ground rolling or by carriage means faciiitating travel of the apparatus without ground contact of the roller means.
Preferably such apparatus comprises roller means, a roller frame to which the roller means is rotatably connected for rolling action, a main frame to which the roller frame is connected, carriage means for the main frame and means for selectively moving the carriage means relative to the main frame between a ground engaging position in which the main frame is supported by the carriage means and a raised position in which the carriage means is raised out of contact with the ground, the arrangement being such that with the carriage means raised the roller means engages the ground for use in ground rolling and with the carriage means in the ground engaging position the roller means is raised out of contact with the ground whereby the apparatus may travel without ground rolling action of the roller means.
Conveniently the roller frame is connected to the main frame by pivotal connection means whereby the roller means is selectively pivotal between a rolling position in which the roller means extends transversely to a preferred direction of movement of the apparatus so as to provide ground rolling action in the preferred direction and a stowed position in which the roller means extends generally parallel to the preferred direction of movement of the apparatus for use in travel of the apparatus without ground rolling action.
An advantage of such an arrangement is that whilst travelling from one site to another the apparatus may have minimal width whilst during roller action the width of the roller means may be fully deployed.
Preferably such apparatus further comprises means operable between the roller frame and the main frame for selectively urging the rolling means from one position to another. Conveniently the urging means comprises ram means.
Preferably the apparatus further comprises a second ram means operable between the carriage means and the main frame for urging the carriage means from one position to the other.
An advantage of such an arrangement is that an operator may then rapidly and effortlessly adapt the apparatus for rolling or travel as required.
Conveniently the apparatus is a towed vehicle, the main frame having a leading end having means for coupling to a towing vehicle and a trailing end selectively supportable by the carriage means, the arrangement being such that the roller frame is connected to the main frame intermediate the leading end and the carriage means.
Preferably the main frame comprises a beam extending generally parallel to the preferred direction of motion of the apparatus and the carriage means comprises a pair of wheels and a cooperating pair of support legs for the wheels, the support legs being pivotally connected to and deployed on opposite sides of the beam.
Conveniently the support legs are rotatable between the ground engaging position and raised position by action of a single ram.
According to a further aspect of the present invention there is disclosed a method of transporting roller means using apparatus as hereinbefore disclosed and including the steps of lowering the carriage means into the ground engaging position at a first location of the apparatus to thereby lift the roller means clear of the ground, rotating the roller means from a rolling position into a stowed position, driving the apparatus from the first location to a second location, rotating the roller means from the stowed position to the rowing position and raising the carriage means from the ground engaging position to the raised position so that the roller means is in contact with the ground and the apparatus is again ready for ground rolling.
Specific embodiments of the present invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings of which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of ground rolling apparatus having roller means in the ground engaging position, Figure 2 is a side view of the apparatus of Figure 1 being towed by a tractor, Figure 3 is a perspective view of the apparatus of Figures 1 and 2 with the roller raised in the stowed position and Figure 4 is a side view of the apparatus of Figure 3 being towed by a tractor during travel of the apparatus between one site and another.
The apparatus 1 of Figure 1 comprises a roller means comprising a cylindrical roller 2 which is rotatably supported on a roller frame 3 for rolling action.
The roller frame 3 is supported beneath a beam 4 of a main frame 5 by means of a pivotal connection 6. The main frame 5 extends longitudinally from a leading end 7 to a trailing end 8 and has a vehicle coupling 9 at its leading end suitable for attachment to a tractor.
A first hydraulic ram 11 is connected between the beam 4 and the roller frame 3 such that by extension or retraction of the ram the roller frame and hence the roller 2 may be rotated between a transverse and a longitudinal orientation with respect to the longitudinally extending beam 4.
-At the trailing end 8 of the beam 4 there is provided a carriage means 10 comprising wheels 12 which are rotatably mounted at the ends of support legs 13. Transverse members 14 extend on either side of and tranversely with respect to the beam 4 adjacent the trailing end 8 and are journalled to receive an axle 15 connected to the support legs 13. A central portion 16 of the axle 15 is exposed in line with the beam 4 and lugs 17 projecting from the axle are engaged by a second hydraulic ram 18 which is connected between the lugs and the beam 4. Fxtension or retraction of the second hydraylic ram 18 thereby rotates the axle 15 so as to swing the support legs 13 into or out of engagement with the ground respectively.
Figures 2 and 4 show the apparatus of Figures 1 and 3 in use with a towing vehicle 19 which is shown as a tractor. In Figures 1 and 2 the second hydraulic ram is retracted such that the wheels 12 are supported clear of the ground by the support legs 14 and the ground is engaged by the roller 2 which extends transversely to the beam 4. In this configuration the apparatus may be towed to provide rolling action for use for example in rolling turf.
The apparatus as shown in Figures 3 and 4 is in the alternative configuration in which the second hydraulic ram 18 is extended such that the wheels 12 engage the ground and the roller 2 is supported clear of the ground. In this condition the first hydraulic ram 11 is retracted such that the roller 2 extends parallel to the beam 4 so that the apparatus may be towed without ground rolling action and with minimal width.
The first and second hydraulic rams 11, 18 may conveniently be powered by the towing vehicle so that the controls for raising and lowering the support legs 13 and for pivoting the roller 2 may be operated by the driver of the tractor 19. The tractor driver may therefore adapt the towed apparatus between the rolling configuration and the stowed configuration as required without leaving his driving position in the tractor. The use of such apparatus thereby provides savings in operator time and obviates the need for a trailer vehicle to be attached in place of the apparatus in preparation for towing and for the roller to be loaded upon the trailer vehicle. A quicker turn round is therefore possible when the apparatus is to be used for ground rolling at a number of separate sites.
Alternative embodiments of the present invention are possible in which the roller means comprises a plurality of rollers which are deployed in formation and attached separtely to the roller frame. The carriage means may alternatively comprise more than one pair of wheels and may be located both for and aft with respect to the roller means. The ram means may alternatively be pneumatically or electrically powered and may be powered either by the towing vehicle or by a separate power unit mounted on the apparatus. Geared mechanisms may alternatively be used in place of rams so that articulation is derived from rotation of a motor or a power take off from the towing vehicle. The roller or rollers may be heavy cylinders or may be hollow cylinders adapted for on site filling with heavy matter such as water.
