Description

SPECIFICATION A gate This invention relates to a gate having a surround and at least one openable closure, the gate being suitable, for example, as a security gate within a building such as an apartment block.
According to the invention there is provided a gate having a surround and at least one openable closure, the openable closure comprising a plurality of vertical elongate members slidably mounted in the surround for movement between a contracted condition in which they lie adjacent to one another at one side of the surround and an extended condition in which they are spaced apart from one another within the surround, and a foldable blind connected to the vertical elongate members, the foldable blind comprising a plurality of vertically extending slats and slat connectors for connecting adjoining slats to one another, alternate slat connectors being connected to the vertical elongate members, and the slat connectors each comprising twin hinge portions for co-operation respectively with -complementary hinge portions provided at the edges of two adjoining slats.
Preferred and/or optional features of the gate are set forth in claims 2-11.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a front perspective view of one embodiment of a gate according to the invention, in a fully extended condition, Figure 2 is a view similar to'Fig. 1, in a half extended condition, Figure 3 is a rear view of the gate shown in Fig. 1, Figure 4 is a section take-along the line IV IV of Fig 2 tut showing the closure member of the gate in a fully contracted condition, Figure 5 is a section similar to that shown in Fig. 4, illustrating only two vertical members of the closure and in- an extended- condition, Figure 6 to 8 are views illustrating a mechanism for attaching slats to uprights of the gate of Fig. 1, and Figure 9 is a perspective view showing a plug used in connection with slat connectors at both ends of# the blind as shown in Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings, the gate shown therein comprises a surround 10 and an openable closure .11 mounted ~in the surround 10.
The surround 10 is made up of C-shaped channel members 12 and the openable closure 11 comprises a plurality of vertical elongate members 13, ornate cross-members 14 and a foldable blind 15.
The elongate members 13 are sidably mounted in the upper and lower channel members 12 between a contracted condition (Figure 4) in which they lie adjacent to one another at one side of the surround and an extended condition (Figs. 1 and 3) in which they are spaced apart across the width of-the surround.
Each elongate member 13 comprises two spaced interconnected channel elements 16.
The elongate members 13 at both ends of the closure 11 are mounted captive within C- shaped channel elongate members 13a.
The ornate cross-members 14 extend between the spaced channel elements 16 and are mounted on pivot pins 17a and 17b which extend between the two channel elements 16 of each elongate member 13. Alternate pivot pins 17a are secured to the respective channel elements 16 whereas the other pivot pins 17b, whilst being held captive in the respective channel elements 16, can slide vertically.
The foldable blind 15, as shown, extendsover only part of the vertical extent of the closure 11 and is located midway between the upper and lower ends of the closure 11.
The foldable blind comprises a plurality of slats 18 and slat connectors 19a, 19b and 19c, which are conveniently of metal. The slats 18 are of generally I-shaped cross-section with elongate cylindrical or part cylindrical projections 20 extending along opposite longitudinal edges. The slats may, however, be of thin box section.
The slat connectors 19a, 19b and 1 9c have twin elongate part cylindrical sockets 21, which as shown extend over about 270 , and which receive projections 20 of two adjoining slats 18. Projections 20 are themselves nearly completely cylindrical, a gap 23 being formed down the length of each projection 20.
The projections 20 and sockets 21 constitute complementary hinge portions enabling the slats 18 to pivot relative to the slat connectors 19a, 19b and 19c as the closure -11 is extended and contracted in the surround 10.
Alternate slat connectors 19b are secured to the vertical elongate members# 13 of the closure 11 in a manner to be described hereinafter and each has a channel 22 in that surface facing away from its hinge portions. The surface of each of the other slat connectors 19a facing away from its hinge portions is planar.
Slat connectors 1 9c at both ends of the foldable blind 15 have only a single elongate part cylindrical socket 21. These connectors 19c are secured to the C-shaped channel elongate members 13a by rivets 41.
Referring to Figures 6 to 8, the projections 20 ot the slats 18 are slid axially into thecylindrical sockets 21. The. slats are held in position by elastomeric or plastics plugs 24, 25 and 36 which are a push fit in -the ends of the sockets 21. The projections 20 are cut short of the top and bottom edges of the slats 18, as seen in Figure 8 which is an exploded part side view at the region A of Figure-7. Each plug 25 has a pair of cylindrical projections 26 having a reduced diameter por tion 27which is received in a projection 20, and a larger diameter portion 28 which is a push fit in the respective cylindrical socket 21.
Plugs 25 have a platezportion 29 which has a downwardly projecting- wall 30 which is re ceived in the rear channel portion of connector 19b, and an -upwardly projecting wall portion 31 which has an aperture 32 for attaching the plug 25 to an upright 16 by a screw or rivet.
Identical plugs 25 are provided- at the lower ends of-the connectors 19b.
-Plugs 24 are used to- hold the connectors -19a on the slats 18. Plugs 24 comprise a -plate- portion 34 which covers the end of a connector 19a and a pair of cylindrical projec tions 35 which are a push fit in the respective sockets 21,-ends 36 of projections~35 projecting into the respective cylindrical projec tions 20. Identical plugs 24 are provided at the lower ends of the connectors 19a.
Plugs 37 are used to hold the slats 18 in the connectors 19c. Plugs-37 comprise a plate portion 38 which corresponds to and covers the end of a connector 19c and a single projection 39 together with its end 40 of reduced diameter having --function as Bfore- mentioned. Identical plugs 37 are provided at the lower ends of the connectors 19c.
As also shown in Fi#g. 7, the upright mem bers - 16 are closed at their ends by elastom eric or plastics plugs 33.
The gate may have a conventional latch or lock.
The embodiment described above -is given by way of example only and various modifica tions wily be apparant to persons- skilled in the art-without departing from the scope of the invention. For example, the slat connectors may- have twin hinge portions in the' form of cylindrical or part cylindrical projections for co operation with complementary sockets along the edges of the slats. Moreover, the sur round may have two closures which when contracted lie-adjacent opposite sides of the surround and; which join up when extended.
