Abstract

219,230. Wolf, R. Nov. 16, 1923. Appliances for illuminating cavities. - The outer tube of a cystoscope or similar instrument has, at the end to be introduced into the body, a lateral fenestral opening which is adapted to be closed by means of an inner pipe arranged within the outer tube, the inner pipe receiving another tube containing the lens system together, it may be, with operating instruments. As shown in Fig. 1, the outer tube a has a fenestral opening c and is provided with an inner pipe b having an opening d which may be made to register with the opening c. The pipe b is rotatable within the tube a and carries a head f fitted with bores e. The lens system is fitted within the pipe b and comprises, as shown in Fig. 2, a tube j provided with a mirror j<1>, aperture j<2>, and lenses j<3> - - j<5>. The tube j has a head k provided with pins l which fit into the bores e in the pipe b, thus enabling the pipe b and tube j to be rotated within the tube a from outside. The tube j also carries a lead w and a contact piece v conveying current to the lamp i detachably connected to the tube a. Operating instruments may be combined with the inner tube carrying the optical system. For example, as shown in Fig. 3, the inner tube m, which carries an optical system similar to that carried by the tube and which is similarly fitted within the pipe b, is further provided with a rib o which provides longitudinal grooves for the reception of a pair of catheters, these passing through tubular members t each having a valve t<1> on the outer tube a. The catheters are arranged with their inner ends in front of a grooved arm q which is adapted to be rocked by means of a wire p and crank r<1>. In operation, the tube j, for example, is inserted into the pipe b which is arranged, as shown in Fig. 1, so that the opening c is closed. The instrument is then inserted into the cavity, and the pipe b and tube j rotated so that the openings c, d and the mirror j<1> are in line. To replace the tube j by an operating tube, such as m, the aperture c is closed and the tube j withdrawn, its replacement by the tube m being effected without withdrawing the instrument as a whole.
