Abstract
A data backup method for a photographic printer is provided in which the data for determining the printing time, etc. is stored in an external auxiliary memory card such as a RAM or ROM card. If the operator should erase the data in the printer by mistake, it can be restored from the memory card. The memory card is inserted through a slot into the printer to connect it to a memory in the computer in the printer to transfer data between the printer and the memory card.
Description
SPECIFICATION
Data backup system for use with photographic printer
The present invention relates to a data backup system for use with a photographic printer, more particularly, to a method for externally secure setup data stored in a computer in a photographic printer.
Conventionally, there is known a backup system used to secure data stored in a computer in a photographic printer, such as data for determining the printing time, by use of an external jig such as a channel data converter.
By backing up the setup data stored in a photographic printer, identical data can be taken out if the operator should erroneously erase the data stored in a photographic printer. This assures that the data is safely kept and assures a stable, safe printing.
Fig. 4 shows a conventional data backup system using a conventional special jig. It was necessary to first remove a CPU (central processing unit) board 31 from the printer and remove a CPU chip from the CPU board and then connect a cable 34 of a channel data converter 33 (as a special jig) to a socket 32 of the CPU board 31 in order that the set-up data can be transferred to a memory in the channel data converter 33 by use of a CPU in this converter. Normally, it was troublesome to transfer data stored in a photographic printer to a special jig incorporating a CPU. It requires the following steps:
1. Turn off the power to the printer.
2. Remove the cover from the electronic circuit unit.
3. Remove the CPU board from the rack.
4. Remove the CPU chip from the CPU board.
Connect a cable of the special jig to a socket of the CPU board from which the CPU chip has been removed.
6. Reinstall the CPU board in the rack.
7. Turn on the power to the printer and the special jig.
8. By operating keys on the special jig, transfer the data stored in a memory of the
CPU board to a memory in the special jig.
9. Turn off the power to the printer and the special jig.
10. Remove the CPU board from the rack.
11. Disconnect the cable of the special jig from the CPU board.
12. Insert the CPU chip in the CPU board.
13. Mount the CPU board in the rack.
14. Finally, mount the cover to the electronic circuit unit.
Futhermore, similar steps are necessary when conversely transferring the data stored in the special jig to the CPU in the printer. As mentioned above, transferring data using a special jig requires a lot of steps. This makes memory means large-sized and increases the cost.
An object of the present invention is to overcome those problems mentioned above and to provide a backup system which permits a simple and quick backup of setup data.
In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method for backing up data for use in a photographic printer having a computer including a central processing unit and a memory, characterised in that an external auxiliary memory card is inserted into the printer to connect the memory card to the central processing unit of the computer, whereby reading and writing data between the memory in the printer and said external auxiliary memory card.
The present invention allows all the data to be securely stored in an external auxiliary memory card by transferring data such as corrective data for determining the printing time.
As a result, if the operator should erroneously erase the data stored in the printer, the lost data can easily be restored by using the data stored in the external auxiliary memory card.
The data can easily be transferred by merely inserting a memory card into a slot of the printer to connect it to the memory of the printer. Furthermore, if a RAM (random access memory) card or a ROM (read only memory) card is used as the external auxiliary memory card, data can easily be transferred by using the CPU of the printer. This makes it possible to simplify the data transferring and allow backup operation at low cost. Also, the memory can be easily stored as backup data for each photographic printer.
In addition, if the memory capacity on the part of the printer is insufficient, the external auxiliary memory card can be used as a submemory. Furthermore, the initial set-up of the printer can easily be done by feeding basic data into the external auxiliary memory card.
Other features and objects of the present invention will become apparent from the following description with reference to the drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a photographic printer with a CPU board housed therein and with an external auxiliary memory card being inserted therein;
Figure 2 is a view showing the external auxiliary memory card being connected to the
CPU board;
Figure 3 is a diagrammatic view showing how data are transferred among the CPU at the printer side, the external auxiliary memory card, and the RAM at the printer side; and
Figure 4 is a perspective view showing a conventional data backup system.
Referring now more particularly to the accompanying drawings, numeral 1 generally designates a photographic printer operated by an operator. A slot 3 is provided in front of a desk 2, while a CPU board 4 forming a part of the computer in the rack (not shown) is installed deep in the slot 3.
An external auxiliary memory card 6 such as a RAM card or ROM card is inserted through the slot 3, so that the connector 7 of this memory card 6 connects to a connector 8 of the CPU board 4 a shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
When the operator operates keys on the printer, the CPU 5 in the CPU board reads the data from the RAM 9 in the CPU board via an address bus 10 and a data bus 11 and writes the data into the RAM in the external auxiliary memory card 6. (Fig. 3).
Conversely, when transferring the data from the external auxiliary memory card 6 into the
RAM of the CPU board in the printer, the CPU 5 in the CPU board reads the data from the
RAM or ROM in the memory card 6 and writes it into RAM in the CPU board. Finally, after receiving the data from RAM 9, the external auxiliary memory card 6 is drawn out of the slot 3 of the printer.
