219,198. Dowell, W. T. Aug. 30, 1923. Trap nests. - The sliding shutter for the entrance of a trap or trap-nest has improved retaining and releasing means. The door hinged at the side in the usual manner comprises battens 1, 2, and has an entrance hole adapted to be closed by a shutter 3 moving in guides 4. A wooden or metal catch 5 is pivoted at 6 to a reinforcing strip 7 fixed to the shutter, if the latter is of three-ply wood, or is pivoted directly to the shutter, if the latter is of thicker wood, this catch 5 cooperating with a wooden or metal projection 8 fixed to the upper part of the door at a point to one side of a vertical line through the pivot 6. In the raised or set position, the upper end of the catch engages over the part 8 and, on the animal entering the trap-nest &c., the shutter is slightly raised, the catch 5 falls away from the part 8 by gravity and the shutter falls to close the entrance. The downward movement of the catch 5 is limited by the member 9 attached thereto as shown, or by a stop on the shutter or on the side batten 1. The size of the entrance may be varied by adjusting the pivot 6 in one of a series of holes 10, and the downward movement of the shutter 3 may be assisted by springs. The downward movement of the shutter is limited by stops 11 in the grooves 4, and ventilating holes 12 may be provided.
