Abstract

The main purpose of the adjustable holder for plant supports is to provide a tube, to hold a cane or similar effectively within growing medium. The holder comprises a main support tube 10, housing a riser tube 11 and supported by adjustable feet 12. The feet can be moved independently along guides, to give increased support area as well as providing offset position of main support tube. Damage to plant root is eliminated if main support tube is lowered and feet extended to be accommodated by new receptacle base when repotting. By dispensing with collets 13 a larger cane which is usually required can be used. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION An adjustable holder for plant supports This invention relates to an Adjustable Holder for Plant Supports.
Most plants are supported by a cane driven into growing medium, close to the plant stem and through the root system. In the case of a pot plant that grows to a point that will require a larger container, the original cane becomes insubstantial and a larger one is generally required.
When repotting plants or when introducing plants into larger receptacles root damage can occur through two main reasons: Firstly, a larger cane is invariably required, due to the increased height of plant and it's additional foliage. When the new cane is driven into the medium, root damage might occur and also due to it's smaller area, the movement of the cane is inevitable and support is decreased. Secondly, difficulty arises through trying to position the plant within the new pot while also trying to fill around root ball with additional growing medium.
According to the present invention there is provided an adjustable holder for plant supports comprising a main support tube supported by stabilising foot or feet. The purpose is to support a cane or similar support within any container with a minimum four inch/l0 cm. diameter base, or growing bag, trough or directly into the earth.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure 1 shows the telescopic tube arrangement.
Figure 2 illustrates the feet which can be moved independently to give positions offestfrom the plant stem.
Figure 3 shows collets that would stabilise the support within the telescopic tube.
Figure 4 shows the watering tube that lies vertically alongside the telescopic tube to direct water to the root as an optional extra.
Figure 5 illustrates expansion of tube and feet when transferred to a larger recepticle.
Referring to the drawings for an Adjustable Holder for Plant Supports, it consists of a main support tube 10, housing a risertube 11,free standing on foot or adjustable feet 12, for the purpose of supporting a cane or similar support within any container with a min. 10 cm/or minimum four inch diameter base, or growing bag, trough or directly into the earth. When used in a container the adjustable feet 12 section will facilitate drainage.
Collets 13 are provided to stabilise the cane or similar support within the riser tube 11 if the support diameters are considerably smaller than the internal diameter of the riser tube 11.
To position the Adjustable Holder within the confines of a receptacle the adjustable feet 12 can be moved independently. By varying the position of adjustable feet 12 to their full extent requires pushing or pulling the feet diametrically from the centre ofthe main support tube 10 to the required position along the slides. An offset position of the main support tube 10 can be achieved by individually adjusting the adjustable feet 12 to the required position, as shown in Figure 2 and Figure 5.
In orderto set the adjustable risertube 11 at the required height, the riser tube 11 which is located within the main support tube 10 should be lifted to a position just proud of the growing medium. The governing flanges 15 are incorporated at the lower end of the riser tube 11 and the upper end of the main support tube 10. This forms the guide bore and prevents the riser tube 11 being lifted out of the main supporttube 10 as shown in Figure 1.
In order to stabilise the cane or support should it be smaller in section than the bore of the riser tube 11, a pair of collets 13 are provided to reduce the difference as shown in Figure 3. The collets 13 should be loosely fitted around the cane or support above the risertube 11 and slipped down the cane or support and pressed into the riser tube bore.
The watering tube 14 is an optional extra. This, it is suggested, is fitted around the outside of the riser tube 11 by means of the moulded clips on the watering tube 14 with the tube bore uppermost, as shown in Figure 4. The object of the watering tube 14 is to allow water to be given to the plant roots more efficiently.
Figure 5 shows the Adjustable Holder for Plant Supports as it would appear when transferred from one receptacle to a larger receptacle. The adjustable feet 12 have been opened up to expand the diameter which, with the added weight of the extra growing medium, also gives greater stability. The riser tube 11 is also shown extended to appearjust proud of the growing medium.
The Adjustable Holder for Plant Supports should consist of a plastic or synthetic material in moulded form.
1.An Adjustable Holder for Plant Supports comprising a main support tube supported by stabilising foot or feet. The purpose is to support a cane or similar support within any container with a minimum ten centimeter/four inch diameter base, or growing bag, trough or directly into the earth.
2. An Adjustable Holder for Plant Supports as claimed in claim 1 wherein the stabilising feet are fully adjustable enabling them to obtain a larger diameter.
3. An Adjustable Holder for Plant Supports as claimed in claim 2 wherein the adjustable stabilising feet can be extended independantly thereby effecting an offset position for the support tube.
