Abstract

219,122. Barnard, J. W., and Dawkins, T. C. May 14, 1923. Hair-cutting appliances, barbers' and like; hair curling, crimping, and frizzing appliances.-In an electrical heating device for singeing hair and like purposes wherein current is supplied through a switch and a variable resistance to a heating element held between the forked arms of a holder, the holder is formed from a casting 3, Fig. 1, of aluminium made in two parts with a circular chamber 9 at the junction of the handle 4 and the forked arms 2 between which the heating element' 1 is held. The chamber 9 contains the regulatable resistance which comprises a number of mica plates upon which a resistance wire 11, Fig. 5, is wound, the ends of the wire 11 being connected to contacts 12 and a strip 13 mounted in a block 14 of fibre, vulcanite, &c. A slider 16, provided with a knob 17 projecting through a slot 18 in the chamber 9, works in a groove 15 between the contacts 12 and the strip 13, and is moved to regulate the temperature of the heating element 1.
