Abstract

A method of making pump rods shaped each as a bar (1) with end heads (2) consists in upsetting the end portions (8) of the bar (1) at a temperature excluding the softening of the metal of the bar (1) and thus providing at each of the portions (8) a thickening (9) the width of which in the direction perpendicular to the axis of the bar (1) is equal to or larger than the maximum diameter of the head (2) within the weld joint area and the length of which exceeds the width of the welding heat-affected zone (17), and providing also a transitional section (10) shaped as a body of revolution the cross-section of which smoothly and continuously diminishes in the direction from the thickening (9) to the bar (1). The upsetting is followed by the pressure welding of each end head (2) to the thickening (9) on the end portion (8) of the bar (1) and by the machining of the weld joint area.
