Abstract

A rear engined vehicle (10) for a disabled driver (11) comprises a door (12) and an opening (13) at the front of the vehicle, hand controls (14) upon retractable steering means (15), a driving seat having a squab (17) pivoted on a slidable base (18). Activation of a crank handle (19) moves the seat (16) from the driving position to the entry/exit position and vice versa. Upon releasing catch (21) a compression spring (22) urges the squab (17) upwards assisting the driver (11) into a standing position. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Vehicle for disabled drivers This invention relates to vehicles for disabled drivers and has for its object the provision of means for assisting a driver with weakened legs into and out of a vehicle, without human aid.
According to the present invention, a rear engined vehicle for a disabled driver comprises a driving seat mounted for horizontal movement between a driving position and an entry/exit position in or adjacent a door opening in the front of the vehicle with the seat facing forwardly of the vehicle and being provided with means to assist the driver into a standing position.
Thus to enter the vehicle, a disabled driver stands with his/her back to the seat in the entry/exit position, lowers himself/herself on to the seat, followed by raising ofthefeet, and causes the seat to move to the driving position; while, to leave the vehicle, the disabled driver causes the seat to move from the driving position to the entry/exit position, lowers the feet to the ground, and raises himself/herself to standing position.
The vehicle will have hand controls only, thus leaving the floor clear of pedals liable to obstruct easy movement of the feet across the floor and the hand controls will be on steering means retractable when the door is opened.
The driving seat is preferably provided with releasable means for securing it at ieast in the driving position.
The meansto assistthedriverinto astanding position may have a squab pivoted along its front on a base and be provided with a compression spring between its underside and the base, and a catch may be provided to prevent raising of the squab other than when required, or the squab may be mounted on links on a base and be adapted to be raised upon opening of the door.
Movement ofthe driving seat may be effected by powered means or manually, e.g., by a lever, or by a rack-and-pinion and crank-handle mechanism, which lever or mechanism may serve as or incorporatethereleasable meansforsecuringthe seat in the driving position, and movement ofthe driving seat may be linked to movement of the door, sothatopening ofthedoorfromthe outside bythe disabled driver brings the driving seat to the entry/exit position ready for entry ofthe disabled driver into the vehicle.
The driving seat may be mounted on a straight track or in guides, to and from the entry/exit position, and the door may be side ortop hung.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: Figure lisa diagrammatic vertical longitudinal part-section showing the driving seat in its driving position; and Figure 2 corresponds to Figure 1 butshowsthe seat in its entry/exit position.
In Figure 1 a vehicle 10 fora disabled driver 11 comprises a door 12 in an opening 13 atthe front of the vehicle, hand controls 14 upon retractable steering means 15, a driving seat 16 having a squab 17 pivoted on a slidable base 18. Activation of a crank handle 19 movestheseat16along guides 20from the driving position to the entry/exit position as shown in Figure 2 and vice versa. Upon releasing catch 21 a compression spring 22 urges the squab 17 upwards and forwards assisting the driver 11 into a standing position.
