Abstract

Mechanical handling apparatus (1) which has a main channel section or housing (2) of extruded aluminium within which there is a steel U-section roller track (3) housing rollers (4), the whole being closed by a top plate (5) which has holes (6) through which respective rollers (4) protrude when an air bag (7) in the main housing (2) under the U-channel (3) is inflated.

Description

SPECIFICATION Mechanical handling apparatus The invention relates to mechanical handling apparatus, particularlythat which incorporates an inflatable device such as an air bag, which raises and lowers a conveyor device such as atracksontaining rollers so that the rollers "rise" and "sink" with reference to a support surface which has through holes aligned with the rollers so that the rollers can rise through them to be proud of the surface when the bag is inflated, so that a load can be moved on the rollers over the support surface. When the bag is deflated the rollers sink beneath the surface and deposits the load on the support surface.
The roller track is usually housed in a main channel which is secured to a substrate orfoundation which is usually parallel to the support surface. It is necessary that such main channels are firmly secured to the substrate.
Accordingly, the invention provides a mechanical handling apparatus comprising a main housing and a securing means therefor, the securing means and housing having complementary surfaces which engage in use securely to hold the apparatus in position on a substrate.
The securing means may secure two substantially parallel mechanical handling apparatus in position on the substrate, in spaced apart relationship.
The main housing may comprise an aluminium extrusion.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings.
In the drawings there is shown mechanical handling apparatus 1 which has a main channel section or housing 2 of extruded aluminium within which there is a steel U-section rollertrack 3 housing rollers 4, the whole being closed by a top plate 5 which has holes 6 through which respective rollers 4 protrude when an air bag 7 in the main housing 2 underthe U-channel 3 is inflated.
The housing 2 has a thickened "foot" or lateral longitudinally extending flange 8 at each side, and theflange is of wedge shape in transverse cross-section as shown. At spaced apart intervals there are slots 9 through which a securing device such as a screw 10 can be inserted after it is inserted through a complementary shaped securing means in the form of a clip or shoe 11 which has a surface 12 of complementary shape to that of the foot on the external (upper in use) surface 13 of the foot. The facing surfaces 12 and 1 3 of the foot and shoe may be serrated, say longitudinally, to improve grip.
The apparatus 1 is secured in position by applying a series of secu ring devices 10, 11 at spaced intervals along the main channel 2 on each lateral foot 8.
When the respective screws 10 are screwed home into substrate 14, the securing means or shoes 11 bear on the feet 8 and hold the apparatus 1 in position. The complementary bearing surfaces 12 and 13 ensure a firm, even pressure and a positive engagement of the feet and shoes.
Where two main housing members are to be secured side by side, in parallel, adjacent feet of the separate housings can be secured in position by a single, central series of securing means 14, the screws 10 of which can pass through the foot of one housing only, or through both. The securing means has two surfaces of complementary shape to that of the feet of the two housings.
The surfaces may be smooth ratherthan serrated.
The screw 10 may be replaced by a bolt.
A mechanical handling apparatus embodying the invention can have, as shown in the drawings, the following features: (1 ) Extruded aluminium alloy main channel (2) Screw retention bars (3)Slotguideforrollerchannel (4) Divided roller cradle (5) Air bag retention clips (6) Side and centre fasteners to secure track (7) Optional top plates - heavy duty - double width (8) Slot head screws (9) Bottom entry air inlet access.
The invention above described as shown in the drawings may be modified. For example, the wedge shape of the flange may be changed to a flatflange with an external rib. Slots may not be used and the clip being supplied may be a guiderclip.
The clips may not be used and a hole may be drilledthroughtheflangetosecurethemain channel, while retaining the complementary surfaces.
