Abstract

A coving 30 of thin moulded plastics sheet has along its length two preferably mutually perpendicular surfaces 32,34 for adhesion to corresponding surfaces (22,24 Fig.1) of a coving 18 affixed to the joint 12 between ceiling 14 and wall 16. The coving may have an ornate surface feature 36 which could only be formed by moulding. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Covings The present invention relates to covings, particularly to covings applied to the corner between a ceiling and an adjoining wall.
Rather than leave a sharp right-angled joint between a ceiling and the adjoining walls in a room of a house or other building it is often preferred to conceal the jointwith a shaped coving. Such covings are usually provided in convenient lengths for adhesion to a wall and ceiling. Appropriate corner pieces are also provided for corners between two walls and the ceiling.
A coving may be ornately designed having an irregular section along its length or may simply provide a plain concave surface between the ceiling and walls. Between these two extremes there are covings of constant but perhaps intricate cross section.
Where a coving is ornate it is usually moulded individuallyfrom plaster and is accordingly somewhat expensive. However where a coving is of constant cross section then it can be extruded from polystyrene or other suitable material and is thus much cheaper.
However a particularly cheap coving which is commonly employed nowadays has a plain concave surface and is moulded from piaster in a paper envelope, in much the same way as plaster board is manufactured.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a coving which, while it is cheap to manufacture, can nevertheless be provided with an ornate, irregular cross section along its length.
In accordance with the invention there is provided a coving comprising a sheet of plastics material moulded to a desired shape and having two surfaces adjacent each long edge bywhich the coving is fixable, preferably by adhesion, to a plain coving as hereinafter defined.
The term "plain coving" as used herein is hereby defined as a coving which has two surfaces adjacent each long edgethereofto which a coving according to the invention may be affixed.
Thus a plain coving is usually unadorned having only a concave external surface which it is desired to render more attractive but there is no reason why a plain coving should not have some pattern which it is now desired to replace with a different one.
Moreover said cheap and commonly employed covings referred to above are plain covings as defined herein because they have two narrow surfaces adjacent each long edgethereofwhich surfaces are perpendicular both to the concave surface of the coving and to the respective wall or ceiling to which each surface is adjacent when the coving is fixed in place.
Thusinacoving according to the invention the surfaces disposed adjacent each long edgethereof areso dimensioned asto fitthe corresponding surfacesofthe plain coving. Itisthen only a matter of applying an adhesive between said surfaces to adhere the coving in accordance with the present invention to a coving already in place.
Where there is no coving in place or there is coving which is not "plain" as defined herein and it is desired to have an ornate coving then it may be quite feasible to remove any existing coving and put up a plain coving followed by a coving according to the invention.
Thus in another aspect of the invention there is provided a composite coving comprising a plain coving as hereinbefore defined and a coving constructed from a sheet of plastics material moulded to a desired shape and having two surfaces adjacent each long edge by which said coving is fixable, preferably by adhesion, to corresponding surfaces on said plain coving.
It is usually considered easier in this case first to fix covings according to the invention to the plain covings before applying the lattertothejoint between the ceiling and walls.
When in place covings according to the invention are visually indistinguishable from plaster covings and they may be painted with emulsion paints of any desired colour.
The invention is further described hereinafter with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure lisa section through a wall and ceiling joint having disposed between them (on a plain coving) a coving according to the invention; and, Figure 2 is a perspective cutaway view of the covings, ceiling and wall shown in Figure 1.
In the drawings, thejoint 12 between a ceiling 14 and wall 16 is concealed bya coving 18 adhered to the wall and ceiling. The coving 18 is illustrated as having a plain concave exterior surface 20 and two mutually perpendicularflat surfaces 22,24 adjacent each edge ofthe coving.
Applied to the plain coving 18 is a further coving 30 according to the present invention. This coving 30 comprises a sheet of semi-rigid plastics material which has been shaped in a vacuum mould to have flatsurfaces32,34which match and lie against surfaces 22, 24 of the plain coving 18.
Between the flat surfaces 32,34 the coving 30 can have any shape desired but in the drawings is shown as having three distinct regions. Firstly there is a stepped region A leading from the surface 32 to region Bwhich is the main decorative partofthe coving and which has a relief pattern 36 repeating along the region. Finally region C is a smoothly curving plain surface joining region Btothesurface 34. The region B could not of course be formed byan extrusion process because it has an irregular cross section. This if it was desired to use an extrusion process a region such as the region B illustrated wouid have to be omitted.
The coving 30 is retained in position most conveniently by adhesion between adjacent surfaces 22, 32 and 24, 34. It should be noted that the coving 30 abuts the wall 16 and ceiling l4onlyalong its extreme edges and thus could not reliably be held againstthewall and ceiling withoutthe interdisposition ofthecoving 20towhich itis attached.
While the coving 30 is illustrated as having two flat mutually perpendicular surfaces 32, 34for connection with corresponding surfaces 22,24, on coving 20, it should be appreciated that not all covings which one might wish to cover with an alternative coving may have such surfaces 22,24.
It is thus within the scope of the present invention to provide alternative covings 30 which have different surfaces 22, to suit the particular circumstances ofthe covings it is desired to cover.
For instance the surfaces 22,24 of a plain coving already in place on awall may be found to lie at anglesotherthan perpendicular with respecttothe wall 16 or ceiling 12. Moreoverthere may be no apparent junction between the surfaces 22,24 and the main coving surface 20; instead they may blend smoothly into the main surface 20 ofthe coving. In any event a coving according to the present invention can be arranged to match a given type of plain coving.
At each end of the coving 30 a lip 38 is provided shown in dotted lines in Figure 2. This is trimmed off in normal use when covings 30 are overlapped but they can be retained at one end so as to fit overthe end of the coving 20, pa rticularly when adjacent to a corner piece of coving which is usually positioned between covings in a corner between two walls and a ceiling.
