Abstract
218,859. Armstrong Siddeley Motors, Ltd., Smith, F. R., and Shilson, B. W. Aug. 7, 1923. Casings; deflectors. -Blades, baffles, or equivalent guiding means are provided in the discharge conduit of an air-brake dynamometer to neutralize the rotational movement of the air as it leaves the fan casing. The side A<2> of the fan casing has attached to it near its peripheral edge A<3> an annular conduit B formed by truncated conical inner and outer walls B<2>, B<3> the larger diameters being towards the casing A. Preferably the outer wall A<4> of the casing A is also coned with the larger diameter towards the conduit B thus providing an ample opening for the passage of air from fan to conduit. Spiral blades Care arranged in the conduit in such manner that the normal cross-sectional area of the passages between them is uniform from end to end. This effect may be obtained by giving the curves an involute form derived from a base circle having the diameter of the small end of the annular conical passage or a diameter somewhat less than this.
