Abstract
A paper drive tractor for feeding a paper web through a printer or burster has pins 3 which engage in holes punched along the edges of the paper web and a hinged top 4 for holding the web on the pins. The holes 3 are formed in edge strips of the web, separated from the body of the web by continuous lines of perforations and projections 5 on the lid 4 engages these perforation lines to tear along them thereby separating the edge strips from the remainder of the web. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Design for the removal of perforated edge strip from computer continuous paper
The following description is given by way of example of my invention only and not by way of limitation thereof.
Figures 1 and 2 show the existing arrangement of a typical paper-drive mechanism, fitted to a printer, coupled to a computer. Fig.
1 is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation looking in the direction of the paper travel. Note that only the right hand unit is illustrated. One (or both) of the drive shaft(s) 1, drive(s) a flexible continuous belt 2, on which lugs or sprockets 3 engage with holes in the paper. The hinged top 4, prevents the paper from jumping off these lugs or sprockets 3.
These units which drive the paper through the printer or burster are commonly called tractor drives, mechanisms of different manufacturers differ in detail but are basically similar, as are drive mechanisms of bursters.
After the paper has passed through the printer the perforated edge drive strip is not usually required, and has to be torn off, by hand, a tedious business.
Figures 3 and 4 show the addition of a small blunt or sharp projection 5 underneath the hinged top 4 of the tractor drive mechanism. Thus the perforated paper edge drive strip can be removed automatically at the printer, or the burster. Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation looking in the direction of paper travel.
Fig. 4 is an elevation looking in direction A (shown on Fig. 3). The paper travel is from right to left (on Fig. 4).
This projection 5 is located at the end (in the direction of paper travel) of the flexible belt-drive 2. This projection 5 is located close to (within 1 mum) the edge of the belt-drive carrier 6, in order to exert a "cutting" action, on/at the tear performations, of the perforated edge drive strip of the continuous paper.
In order to accomodate different widths of perforated edge drive strip the belt-drive 2 is adjustable in relation to the edge of the beltdrive carrier 6, or vice versa so that the edge drive strip tear perforations can be lined up with the edge of the belt-drive carrier 6.
The projection is retractable as the perforated edge drive strip may be required to drive the paper through a burster, and/or for use in filing.
I envisage that the projection be produced in "nylon plastic" similar to that used in the existing drive mechanisms.
Note that a similar cutting action may be effected with a sharp (or blunt) knife blade or roller, located in similar position.
1. A paper drive mechanism for a printer, burster or the like adapted to feed paper having perforated edge strip through a printer or burster by engagement with the edge strip, and comprising projection means for engaging the perforated edge strip so that it is severed automatically from the paper after feeding through the printer or burster.
2. A paper drive mechanism substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to
Figs. 3 and 4 of the accompnying drawings.
3. Projection means adapted for use in a mechanism according to claim 1 or claim 2.
