The present unit may be employed to sever the strip on a longitudinal line by cutting action in the event that the division line has not been previously weakened, or in the latter event a relatively dull tool may be used for breaking the pre-weakened line.
Referring to the drawing, I is a rotary shaft upon which eith'er a single or a pair of strip feeding and trimming units are mounted for unison rotation and for axial adjustment. Usually the stationery is marginally punched at opposite edges, both of which are to be removed. Hence the necessity for plural trimmers. However, for some purposes the strip material is fed by a single succession of feeding holes, in which case but one such combined unit may be necessary.
The present unit includes a pin wheel 2 having thereon a plurality of radial feeding pins 3 for progressive engagement in marginal holes 4 in the superposed strips 5 of record material for feeding and aligning the strips as they approach writing, imprinting or other operative positions, to maintain registry of superposed data imprinted thereon.
The particular pin wheel illustrated is of the type having reciprocatory feeding pins which aresuccessively projected into engaging relation in the holes 4 of the strips and retracted therefrom as the wheel 2 is rotated. Such automatic operation of the feeding pins is shown and described in Reissue Patent No. 2(l,888, and forms no part, per se, of the present invention. A conventional form of pinwheel h'aving relatively fixed pins may be used withequal facility and results.
The pin wheel 2 is extended laterally inwardly of the plane of the feeding pins 3 forming a cylindrical face 6 having therein-a peripheral groove 1. Mounted upon a shaft 8 in parallel relatively spaced relation with the pin wheel shaft I is an arm 9 capable of oscillatory movement, toward and from the pin wheel. The arm 9 is provided with a hub IU journaled on a trunnion sleeve I I mounted on the shaft 8 and' adapted to be fixedly secured thereto in various positions of axial adjustment. The arm hub I Il is secured on the sleeve II against axial movement by a collar I2, which is transfixed by a set screw I3 threaded in the trunnion sleeve II and engaging the shaft 8 to lock the sleeve thereto. The arm 9 and hub ID are secured in adjusted rotative position about the bearing sleeve by a set screw I4 threaded in the hub IIJ and engageable with th'e trunnion sleeve II. Located beside the arm 9 isa slotted arcuate paper guide or holddown member I5, one end of which is formed into an eye I6 enclosing the shaft 8 and the free end of which is formed with opposite spaced upstanding ears II connected transversely to the extremity of the arm 9 by astud I8. The construction is such that the slotted guide finger I5 is movable to and fro about the shaft 8 in unison with the arm 9 and is held in its adjusted position bylocking the arm. The assembly is further adjustable axially of the shaft 8 and held in adjusted position by the set screw I3.. In its operative, depressed position, the arcuate guide finger I5 extends in concentric spaced relation with the pin wheel 2 in such relation that the 75 vfeeding pins 3 extend through the holes 4 of the superposed strips 5 and thence through the slot. I5 of the guide linger I5. Thus the slotted finger retains the strips 5 in -operative engagement with the feeding pins, preventing their accidental disengagement therefrom, but without imposing any frictional resistance to advancement of the strips by the pin wheel.
Carried also by the arm 9 and extending in transverse elevated relation with the slotted guide finger I5 is stud I9 of relatively large diameter, which is transversely slotted adjacent its extremiity to adjustably receive a cutting blade 2I which may be secured in adjusted position by a set screw 22 in the end of the mounting stud I9.
The cutter blade is disposed in the plane of the periphera1 groove 'I in the face 6 of the pin wheel, into which the lower end of the cutter blade is projected. The cutter blade ZI is preferably, although not necessarily, inclined to the direction of travel of the strips. The upper end of the cutter, above the mounting stud I9, is enclosed in a channel shaped sheath 23 aixed to guide finger- I5 and cutter blade 2I are returned to operative positions as illustrated in Figs. 1, 2 and 3. I The strips 5 are progressively advanced by engagement of successive pinsV 3 in the holes 4 as the pin wheel is rotated. The strips are thus drawn against and past the cutter blade 2 I, which severs the strips upon a longitudinal line parallel with the lateral edge of the strips at the inner side of the succession of feed holes 4, thus removing from the strips narrow continuous marginal areas 24 as is shown in Fig. 6. In Fig. 7 there is shown a modification wherein in lieu of mounting the cutter blade 2| upon the arm 9, th'e cutter is mounted independently thereof upon an arm 25 carried by a shaft 26 and held in adjusted position thereon by a set screw 21. The knife ZI projects from its supporting arm 23 across the path of the strips fed by the pin wheel. In this embodiment the strip path is intermediate two spaced guide plates 28 'having therein registering openings 29 through which the knife 2| extends. Obviously, if the strips have been preweakened along the line of severance, the member 2I need not be sharpened as a knife, but may have `a relatively dull edge which, engaging the strips'coincident with the weakened severance lines, will serve to break the strips therealong without actual cutting action.
When severing strips of material. of certain character, it may be found that the material resists a straight thrust cut, but will yield to a draw cut, or that lint may collect upon and clog 1s attached to the side of the pin wheel 2 a.v
notched or serrated ring 30 engaged by a roller 3I carried on the end of the slotted paper guide or hold-down arm I5. As the pin wheel rotates, a vibratory motion incident to the engagement of the roller 3I with the toothed ring 30 transmits wheel, the pins a. vibratory motion to the slotted arm I5 and thence to the cutter blade. This imparts a slight to and fro draw cut of the knife against the advancing strip, which facilitates its division and detaches any adhering particles. 1
The subject matter of the present application is broadly disclosed, but not particularly claimed, in copending application Serial No. 279,341, which is a division of an earlier application Serial No. 116,552, filed December 18, 1936, now matured into Letters Patent No. 2,172,414, and copending application Serial No. 294,199, which is a division of an earlier application Serial No. 115,804, filed December 14, 1936, and now matured into Letters Patent No. 2,177,675, and in copending application Serial No. 277,484, which is a continuation in part in unison with the of an earlier application Serial No. 157,706, filed August 6, 1937, now matured into Letters Patent No. 2,160,916.
From the above description it will be apparent that there is thus provided a device of the character described possessing the particular features of advantage before enumerated as desirable, but which obviously is susceptible of modification in its form, proportions, detail construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the principle involved or sacrificing any of its advantages.
While in order to comply with the statute the invention has been described in language more or less specific as` to structural features, it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the specific features shown, but that the means and construction herein disclosed comprise the preferred form of several modes Kof putting the invention into effect, and the invention is there- 2 fore claimed in any of its forms or modifications within the legitimate and `valid scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described the claimed is:
1. In a strip trimming device, a rotary pin wheel, the pins of which have progressive engagement in a succession of longitudinally spaced holes in a strip of material for advancingthe strip past a severing position, the pin wheel havinvention, what is ing therein a peripheral groove, a cutter knife disposed in the plane of said groove with its terminal end projecting thereinto, an adjustable mounting upon which the knife is carried for movement toward and from the pin wheel, and means for transmitting a vibratory motion to the knife mounting to effect a jogging draw cut action of the knife upon a strip advanced by rotation of the pin wheel to remove from the strip a marginal portion containing said succession of longitudinally spaced holes.
- 2. In-a strip trimming device, a rotary pin ment in a succession of longitudinally-spaced holes in a strip of material for advancing the strip past a severing position, a peripheral groove in the pin wheel in parallel offset relation with the feeding pins, an elongated cutter blade against which the strip is advanced by the pin wheel, .the extremity of which extends into the perlpheral'groove, the progressively remove from the advancing strip a marginal portion thereof containing the succession of longitudinally spaced holes.
3. In a strip trimming device, a pin type strip feeding device, thev pins of which have engagement in a succession of longitudinally spaced holes in a continuous strip of material, a groove in the feeding device in parallel offset reprogressiveV of which have progressive engagecutter'being operative to lation with'the feeding pins, a severing device disposed in the path of the advancing strip coincident with the groove in the feeding device relative to which the strip is advanced by the pin type strip feeding device, and means for transmitting vibratory motion tothe severing device advancement of the strip', said device being operative to remove from the strip a marginal portion thereof containing the succession of longitudinally spaced holes.
4. In a strip trimming device, a pin type strip feeding device, the pins of which have progressive engagement in a succession of longitudinally spaced holes in a having a preweakened division line in parallel offset relation with the succession of longitudinally spaced holes, a severing y path of travel of the strip coincident with the preweakened line thereof, relative to which the strip is ladvanced by the pin type feeding device, and means for transmitting vibratory motion to the severing device in ment of the strip, said device being operative to remove from the strip along, said weakened line a marginal portion thereof containing said longitudinally spaced holes. 5. In a strip trimming apparatus, a strip feeding device having 'progressive engagement with a marginal portion of a continuous strip of material for advancing the strip past a severing position at which a marginal area thereof engaged by the feeding device is progressively removed from the strip, a severing device positioned in the path of advancement of the strip, and offset out of alignment with the strip feeding device, a swinging arm on which the severing device is mounted for swinging adjustment toward and from intersecting relation with the plane of the strip, and mounting" means by which the severing device is adjustable on said arm, and means for securing the arm and the severing device in positions of adjustment.
6. In a strip trimming device, a pin type strip feeding device, the pins 'of which have progressive engagement in a succession of longitudinallyv containing the succession of longitudinally spaced holes. l v
7. In a strip trimmingdevice, a rotary pin wheel, in arm pivotally mounted for movement relative to the pin wheel the axis of which is in parallel offset relation to the axis of the pin wheel, an elongated severing device adjustably secured to the arm and operatively extending within the periphery of the pin wheel, the construction and arrangement being such that by adjustment of the arm the severing device is brought into and out of cooperative relation with 'the pin wheel.
8. In a strip severingdevice, a rotary pin wheel unit, an elongated severing element which when in operative position intersects a plane tangent to the pin wheel unit, a guide element for maintaining the strip to be severed in proximate relation with the pin wheel, upon which the guide and severing elements are supported, the axis of oscillation of said arm being in parallel offset relation to that of the pin wheel unit.
