Description

(54) ADHESIVE TAPE STRIPS (71) I, ERKKI PORRAMO, a citizen of Finland, of Kylväjäntie 36, SF-33340 Tampere 34, Finland, do hereby declare the invention, for which I pray that a patent may be granted to me, and the method by which it is to be performed, to be particularly described in and by the following statement: The invention relates to adhesive tape strips and to a method for manufacturing the same, particularly in the form of a set of strips in a series.
Adhesive tape is usually employed in such a way that a strip of required length is cut or torn off a roll of tape and then pressed on to the required place, e.g. for securing packing paper or for some other purpose. There is, however, the disadvantage that it is often difficult to detach a strip that has been stuck in place, because it adheres to the fastening point right to its edges, so that it is impossible to take hold of it. To detach it, a knife or similar tool is often necessary to raise the edge of the strip a little off the fastening point, after which it is possible to grasp the strip with the fingers and tear it off.
To avoid this inconvenience, it is a known practice that, before the strip is stuck in place, one of its ends if folded a short distance against the adhesive coating of the strip and thus, when such a strip is used for fastening, one end of the strip will remain loose from the surface on which it is pressed, it being then easy to tear off the strip, if necessary.
Of course it is possible to think of supplying finished strips of adhesive tape one end of which would be folded back or left without an adhesive coating, but apparently the manufacture of such strips has hitherto proved so difficult and expensive that such strips have not been available. Besides, an additional difficulty has apparently been the form of packing in which such strips of tape would be presented for use.
To fold over the end of a strip of tape, before fastening it, is of course always somewhat inconvenient and people are not usually disposed to do it.
The purpose of the present invention is to eliminate the above-mentioned inconvenience by producing an advantageous form and method for using and manufacturing adhesive tapes.
The present invention provides a set of adhesive tape strips, each tape strip being detachable for use in such a way that on one end of the strip is left a piece of protective cover underlying the layer of adhesive, wherein the set is formed as a band of adhesive-coated material which is covered with a protective cover sheet, the band having transverse incisions across it at distances corresponding to the width of the strips, the incisions extending through the adhesivecoated material but not penetrating the cover sheet except in a marginal tab region at a side of the band and wherein the protective sheet is provided adjacent to the marginal tab region with a continuous longitudinal incision or equivalent line of weakness which penetrates the cover sheet and divided it into two parts.
Some embodiments of the invention are explained in detail in the following description with reference to the accompanying drawings.
In the accompanying drawings: Fig. 1 shows a top view of a strip of adhesive tape in accordance with the invention, Fig. 2 shows section A-A of Fig. 1, magnified, Fig. 3 shows a top view of a set of adhesive tape strips, Fig. 4 shows section B-B of Fig. 3, magnified.
A strip of tape (Figs. 1 and 2) in accordance with the invention consists of strip 1 of adhesive tape known in itself, one side of which has a coating of contact-sensitive adhesive substance, one end of the strip being provided with small protective cover strip 2b of the same width as the tape to prevent the end of the tape from sticking to the counter-surface when being used, thus allowing the tape to be easily removed from the counter-surface, if necessary.
In accordance with the invention, adhesive tape strips have been advantageously made by using a wide band 4 as an initial blank which consists of band 5 coated with a layer of adhesive, and of protective cover sheet 6 on the underside, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
Superposed band 5 is provided with equally spaced transverse incisions 7, which separate tape strips 1 in band 5 from each other, but do not penetrate underlying protective cover sheet 6, except on one side where the incisions penetrate both layers of the blank for a short distance 8 to form a marginal tab region. In addition, protective cover sheet 6 on the underside is provided with a continuous longitudinal incision 9 which runs near the edge of the band in the marginal tab region, dividing the protective cover sheet into two parts 2a and 2b. Thus each tape strip has a marginal tab carrying a protective part 2b which has been separated from adjacent tabs along lines 8 and which has been separated from the main part 2a of the cover sheet.
When a tape strip is needed, the tab end which is in connection with strip 2b and detached from the blank is taken hold of and the tape strip is detached, coming off cover sheet 6 along incisions 7. Part 2b remains attached to the tape strip and when the tape strip is used prevents it from fastening to its counter-surface.
A band consisting of tape strips and similar to the above-described band 4 can be turned into a roll and delivered and used as rolls, e.g.
in suitable holders. To facilitate the removal of the released part of protective cover sheet 6, said holder can be provided with a toothed cutting blade against which the cover sheet is cut off.
It is possible also to form booklets by attaching several equally-long pieces of band 4 together at one edge, thus facilitating the use of the tape strips.
Also an embodiment can be envisaged in which band 4 is essentially wider so that it allows two tape strips 1 to be placed side by side transversely on the band. Tab regions are then arranged on both sides of the band.
Instead of cutting the protective cover sheet mechanically, it is possible to employ a method in which the appropriate portion of the band is treated with a chemical substance, known as such, which causes fragility in the protective cover sheet, and by bending it slightly at this point, the effect is the same as if there were an incision in the band.
It will be apparent from the drawings that the transverse incisions should penetrate the cover sheet for a distance inwardly from the edge of the band which is equal to or slightly greater than the separation of the longitudinal incision from that side of the band.
If required, the tape strips can be provided with suitable printing in the same way is is known with regard to adhesive tapes. The tapes may be of paper, plastic or thin foil.
WHAT I CLAIM IS: 1. A set of adhesive tape strips, each tape strip being detachable for use in such a way that on one end of the strip is left a piece of protective cover underlying the layer of adhesive, wherein the set is formed as a band of adhesive-coated material which is covered with a protective cover sheet, the band having transverse incisions across it at distances corresponding to the width of the strips, the incisions extending through the adhesive-coated material but not penetrating the cover sheet except in a marginal tab region at a side of the band and wherein the protective sheet is provided adjacent to the marginal tab region with a continuous longitudinal incision or equivalent line of weakness which penetrates the cover sheet and divides it into two parts.
2. A set of strips according to Claim 1 wherein the band of adhesive-coated material has a width equal to the length of the strips.
3. A set of strips in accordance with Claim 1 or 2, which is in the form of a roll.
4. Several sets of strips in accordance with Claim 1 or 2, arranged into a booklet consisting of several leaves.
5. A set of strips according to Claim 1 wherein the band of adhesive-coated material has a width equal to the length of two strips and there is a tab region on both sides of the band.
6. A set of adhesive tape strips substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 3 and 4 of the drawings.
7. A method of manufacturing set of adhesive tape strips in accordance with Claim 1 wherein a band of adhesive-coated material covered with a protective sheet is provided with transverse incisions at distances equal to the desired width of the strips, the incisions extending through the adhesivecoated material but not penetrating the cover sheet except in a marginal tab region at a side of the band, and the protective sheet is provided, on the same side of the band as the marginal tab region, with a continuous longitudinal incision which penetrates the protective sheet, dividing it into two parts.
