Abstract

A louvred panel is made by moulding a panel blank (11) with louvre slats (12) and webs of waste material (13) between said slats and subsequently cutting away (13a, 13b) said waste material by means of a cutting wheel (14) mounted for guided, relative movement with said panel blank along and between the said slats thereof while said blank is on a table (17) in respect to which the said tool is mounted at an angle. Indexing means may be provided positioning the blank and wheel for successive waste cutting operations. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Method for making a louvred panel This invention relates to louvred panels.
Louvred panels can be made relatively inexpensively from durable reinforced plastics material such as glass reinforced plastic (GRP) by moulding a panel blankwith louvre slats and then cutting away the waste material from between the slats. This cutting is done with a hand tool. Thetime required to cut a panel, and thus the labour cost, is unduly high on account of the toughness of the material and the intricate nature of the job, although the finish is never entirely satisfactory and can in many cases- especially with a tired workman - be downright poor.
The present invention provides a means for improved louvre panel production - involving far less time and thus lower labour cost than the conventional hand cutting method, and producing a consistently good finish.
The invention comprises a method for making a louvred panel comprising moulding a panel blank with louvre slats and webs of waste material between said members and substantially cutting away said waste material by means of a cutting wheel mounted for guided, relative movement with said panel blank along and between the said slats thereof while said blank is on a table in respectto which the said tool is mounted at an angle.
The method may be practised using a single cutting wheel cutting between each pair of slats in turn. The panel blank may be formed so thatthe cutting wheel cuts out a strip by making simultaneous parallel cuts along two lines bounding each web of waste material.
Spaced guide means may facilitate relative movement of said wheel and said panel blank along a succession of tracks spaced appropriately to the louvres. Said guide means may comprise an array of guide rails spaced correspondingly to the slats and fixed on the table so thatthe panel blank can be passed overthe cutting wheel to cutout individual webs of waste material, the panel blank being indexed on the rails between successive cuts to present a new web for cutting.
When said panel blank is moulded from GRP a cutting wheel tipped with a high-hardness abrasive material such as diamond may be used.
Methods for making a louvred panel according to the invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa sectional side elevation of part of a set up for cutting the webs, and Figure2 is a plan view of the set up of Figure 1.
The drawings illustrate the making of a louvred panel from a moulded panel blank 11 having louvre slats 12 joined by waste material webs 13 by cutting away the waste material.
The cutting is effected with a diamond or like abrasive material tipped cutting wheel 14which is mounted on an angled shaft 150fa motor16 mounted beneath a table 17 on which the panel blank 11 can beguided by running italong rails 18spaced correspondingly to the slats 12 of the panel blank 11.
The panel blank 11 is indexed over the rails 1 8to make successive cuts.
The blank 11 is so formed that the cutting wheel 14 cuts out a strip by making simultaneous parallel cuts as shown at 13a, 13b along two lines bounding the web of waste material.
Each web of waste is cut away, in a single pass, in turn, the panel blank 11 being indexed over the rails 18 after each cut.
1. A method for making a louvred panel comprising moulding a panel blankwith louvre slats and webs of waste material between said slats and subsequently cutting away said wast material by means of a cutting wheel mounted for guided, relative movement with said panel blank along and between the said slats thereof while said blank is on a table in respect to which the said tool is mounted at an angle.
2. A method according to claim 1, using a single cutting wheel cutting between each pair of slats in turn.
3. A method according to claim 2, using spaced guide means facilitating relative movement of said wheel and said panel blank along a succession of tracks spaced appropriately to the louvres.
4. A method according to any one of claims 1 to 3 in which said panel blank is moulded from reinforced plastics material and said cutting wheel is diamond-tipped.
5. Amethod substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
