Making labels.-In a machine for cutting and folding labels the web of material is fed to the cutting and folding devices by a clamp, while an auxiliary clamp simultaneously carries the last folded label from the folders to a packer tube. The webfeeding clamp 21 and the label-delivery clamp 46 are mounted on a cam-operated compound slide so that they are caused to travel in a rectangular path, first from the position shown in full lines in Fig. 10 to the position shown in broken lines, then at right-angles to this direction to carry the end of the web 10 past the cutter 22 to the folders 25 and the last-folded label from the folders to the packer tube 59, and in another two movements to return to the initial position. In this last movement, the closed jaws 21 are opened by a roller 213 which is mounted on the pivoted jaw running beneath a fixed inclined bar 220, Fig. 4, and a spring latch 216 holds the jaws open until they advance to grip the web, when they are released from the latch by a fixed claw 226 and allowed to close. The jaws 46 are opened and closed by a pivoted bar 53, upon which the lower movable jaw always rests, being lowered and raised by a lever 55 operated by a cam 58 on the shaft 45. The web 10 is drawn by the feeder beneath a brake pad 12, and if it has been printed the printed matter can be adjusted with relation to the cutter by adjusting a deflector 19, Fig. 2, by means of a set-screw 20. Pivoted fingers 79, Fig. 8, support the labels deposited above the packer tube 59, and when a plunger 66 is depressed by a lever 68 and a cam 74, Fig. 4, to press a label into the tube the fingers are withdrawn against the action of springs 80 by a toggle 83 actuated by a lever 88 and a cam 90. The tube 59 delivers the labels directly into the packages to be filled, and the pile of labels is supported within the tube and package by a block 91, Fig. 8, formed in two parts hinged together at 92 and pressed apart by a spring 93 so as to grip the tube frictionally. When a package is removed, a spring shutter automatically closes the tube. Tiie machine is stopped automatically after a predetermined number of labels have been delivered by means of an adjustable and screw-operated sliding nut coming into contact with a stop and thereby operating a clutch.
