To all whom it may GOHGGWb-f Be it known that we, ARTHUR RosnNTHAL and MARTIN RosENTHAL, citizens of the United States, residing at Grand Rapids, county of Kent, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Label-Packing Means, of which I the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in label packing means to deliver from a label cutter and folder and to pack the labels into a suitable receptacle or package. This application is a division of application for .patent Serial No. 656,051, filed August 6, 1923, for label cutting and folding machine, and reference is made to that patent for details of the mechanism forcutting and fold- Ing.
The objects of the invention are:
First, to provide means for taking the cut label or patch from the cutter and folder and delivering and packing'the same into a suitable boX or receptacle.
Second, to provide improved means of packing labels into a box automatically.
Objects pertaining to details of construction and operation will appear from the detailed description to follow.
\Ve accomplish the objects of our invention by the devices and means described in the following spec' cation. The invention and pointed out in the claims. A structure which is a preferred embodiment of our invention is'illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application in which:

In the drawings the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines and similar numerals of reference refer to similar parts throughout the several views. The
same numerals of reference have been main- I tained in this application as in the parent application above referred to, for convenience.
Considering the numbered parts of the drawing, 2 is the frame of the machine, preferably a casting, with legs 3. The label is grasped by the automatically controlled feeding jaws the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. VI, where they automatically close and grasp the end label of the patch or label strip. The jaws are then advanced to the shearing knife 22 carried on pivot 23 and held yieldingly in position by spring 24:. This advanced position is indicated by full lines in Fig. VII. The knife 22 cuts off the label.

The label folding means and the label delivery means to and from the folders are described in detail in Patent N 0. 1,262,986, issued April 16, 1918, to Arthur Rosenthal for label and patch cutting and folding machine, where a detailed description of these cutting and folding means will be found.
The carriage 29. for feeding the label carrying means back and forth and reciprocating the same in the line of the label strip is sup orted in suitable ways 30 and is actu ated by suitable cam means not here detailed. The carriage is held yieldingly toward the cam by spring 33 connected to cross arm '34 on the projecting rod 35 secured to saidcarriage.
A cross carriage 36 is in suitable ways 37, 37 carried by sa1d carriage 29 and disposed transversely thereto and is suitably actuated The label carrying and feeding jaws are carried by this carriage 36. The upperfeeding aw 21 is held yleldingly in closed position y the adjustable spring 21. This main jaw 21 is moved and operated in feeding the tape or strip to the cutter and folder. It disengages the label or patch while it is still held securely by the folder.
An auxiliary pair of jaws 46, 47 is provided to'engage the cut off and folded label and feed the same forward to the patch or label containing receptacle. These auxiliary jaws engage the label while'it is still held by the folder. The upper jaw 46 is secured rigidly by arm 461 to the auxiliary carriage 36. The lower jaw 47 is carried on the adjustable screw 48 by upwardly projecting slotted ears 49. The lower jaw 47 is'provided with upwardly-projecting screw shank 50, on which are adjusting lock nuts 51, 52 to adjust the opening of the jaw.

The cut and folded labels are delivered to the top of the packer tube 59 and are forced down into the same by the plunger 65, having a head 66 with longitudinal slots to accommodate the deflectable label supports. The plunger 65 is in the guide 67 and is reciprocate o-r' actuated by the lever 68 contaming slots 69, which lever acts on pin 70 in the side of the plunger. The lever 68 is fulcrumed at 71 on the upwardly extending arm 72. This lever 68 is actuated by connecting rod 73 by eccentric 74 onthe cam shaft 45, which is embraced by the eccentric ring 75. The upper end of the p-itman is'con'nected to lever 68 by adjust-able pivot 76, secured in slot 77 by set screw 78. It is possible to fit the labels so tightly into the tube that they will be supported, but it is far better to provide a frictionallysupported slidable bottom block 91, divided into two parts hinged together byhinge 92 and forced yieldingly apart by spring 93 disposed in arecess 94 within the same. This block yieldingly engages the side of the packer tube and when forced down beyond the packer tube into the receptacle, yieldingly engages its sides so that the labels within the package are all evenly compressed and fed under pressure into the box. This yielding bottom is removed from the bottom of the box before it is sealed up.

The lower end of the packer tube 59 is then closed automatically by the spring shutter 104 carried by the bracket 105, and forced through slot 106 in the side of the packer tube by the spring 107.
The shutter 104 is held out by the side wall,
of the package 62 so that as soon as the package is pulled down sufficiently to uncover the slot 106, the shutter 104 acts automatically and shoots under the labels in the upper part of the packer tube, taking the position indicated by dotted lines in Fig. III. The yielding block 91' is withdrawn from the filled package 62 and inserted into the top of the packer tube 59 against the cut off slide or shutter 104. An empty package 62 is then inserted, the shutter withdrawn, and the upper end of the side wall of the package is inserted beneath it to hold it in open position.
While this invention has been thus described in detail, it will be understood that the shapes of the labels may be varied, and
they maybe labels or patches. The packer is adapted to all machines of this class. It is desired to claim the invention specifically and broadly, as pointed out in the appended claims.
Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
' 1. In a label packer means, the combination of a packer tube, jaws for delivering labels thereto, defiectable supports for the labels, a plunger co-operating with the said packer tube, and an automatic means for deflecting the label supports as the plunger acts, as specified.
2. In a label packer means, the combination of a label packer tube, a plunger for delivering labels therethrough, a yieldable slidable bottom support comprising a divided block hinged together with spring means for expanding the same into engagement with the Walls of the packer tube and package, as specified.
3. In a label packer means, the combination of a label packer tube, a plunger for delivering labels therethrough, a yieldable slidable bottom support adapted to engage frictionally the said packer tube and package, as specified.
4. In a label packer means, the combination of a label packer tube, a plunger for delivering labels therethrough, a slidable bottom support adapted to engage frictionally the said packer tube and package, as specified.
5. In a label-packer means, the combination of a packer tube for receiving the receptacle, a spring-actuated cut-off slide disposed to be automatically forced through the slot in the side of the packer tube, the wall of the package being adapted to be interposed and hold the slide in open position whereby the packer tube is automatically closed when the receptacle is removed.
6. In a label packer means, the, combination of a packer tube for receiving the receptacle, acut-ofl' slide disposed to be automatically forced through the slot in the side of the packer tube, the wall of the package being adapted to be interposed and hold the slide in open position whereby the packer tube is automatically closed when the receptacle is removed.
