227,519. Rogers, F. H., (Vortex Mfg. Co.). Oct. 16, 1923. Paper and like bags, making.-In a paper-cup forming machine of the type in which blanks are fed to a pair of co-operating forming-dies or rollers, means are provided for applying adhesive to the blanks in succession and one of the dies, preferably the presser die, has a spiral groove on its peripheral surface to engage over the pasted margin of the blank so that excessive pressure on such margin is avoided while the blank is being wound on the other or forming-die and the adhesive will not be squeezed out from between the overlapping portions of the formed cup. The blanks are fed from a magazine to a stationary table and, after being stamped with a film of adhesive near one of its margins, each blank is transferred by a gripping-device to a reciprocating table by which it is advanced between the forming dies. Blank feeding-means. The blanks, of the type shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1, are stacked in a magazine formed by a table 70, upright guide bars 71, 76 and a guide band 75, Figs. 3 and 4, and rest over an opening in the table on bosses 72 at the bases of the bars 71 and upon a pair of arms 79 carried by a rock shaft 78 which may be actuated, through connections from a handle 88 on a pivoted bracket 85, to lift the blanks out of the field of operation of the rotating feed-reel 66, disposed below the opening in the table 70. The feed reel carries friction pads by wich the blanks are fed to rollers 101, 102, the trailing tips of the blank being cut by a supporting pin 74 and guided under an inclined plate 77. The rollers 101, 102 pass the blanks on to a stationary table 33 where the blanks are stamped with a film of adhesive. Adhesive applying-mechanism. A movable plate 35 carrying an electric heater 100 is disposed over the blank on the table 33 which has an opening through which a pad 113, Fig. 6, operates to stamp a portion of the blank with adhesive. The pad 113, which is mounted in vertical guides 120 and reciprocated from a cam on the shaft 147, is supplied with adhesive, when in its lowered position ,by a resilient roller 158 which is carried by blocks 155 reciprocated on guide bars 156. The roller 158, in its forward movement, contacts with a roller 123 rotating in a tank 122 of adhesive and takes up adhesive, which is transferred to the pad 113 in the backward movement of the roller; the roller 158 is rotated during its reciprocation by a roller 159 on the end of its shaft contacting with an angle rail fixed to the machine frame. The roller 123 is provided with a scraper blade 130 adjusted by taper screws 134 which screw through a bearing block 132 and contact with a cam surface 133 on the blade. The blocks 155 and roller 158 are reciprocated by levers 153 and when the handle 88 is moved the plate 35, which is carried by the pivoted bracket 85 is raised and connections between the bracket and the levers 153 shorten the forward throw of the latter so that the roller 158 is not moved far enough to contact with the roller 123; the bracket 85 is carried by a boss 92 which is normally locked by a latch device 99. Blank gripping and transferring device. The blank, with adhesive stamped thereon is transferred from the table 33 to the inclined reciprocating table 31 by gripper jaws 187, 138, Fig. 10, actuated from a crank 173 on a shaft 26, the jaws being first opened and closed to grip the blank on the table 33, then moved downward with the blank held horizontally, and finally opened to lower the blank on to supporting pins 41, 43 and fingers 39 on the table 31 which is then in its retracted position, while spring-controlled arms 191 mounted beneath the table are caused by their spring 193 to project up in front of the table; the blank in its transference to the table 31 is conducted beneath the tips of resilient arms 194, 195, the arm 194 being actuated by a cam to move upwards as the blank is moved beneath it and then to be lowered into frictional engagement with the blank. The table 31, which is reciprocated on guide rods 32 by a lever 30 on the shaft 26, then moves forward with the blank towards the forming and pressing dies 8, 15, the arms 194, 195 pulling the blank backwards against the stops 40, 44 and properly centring it on the table, this action being assisted by the arms 191 which push the blank back and are then lowered by the advancing table; a spring-controlled slidable bar 51 under the table 31 supports the tip of the blank until the bar is arrested by the forming die 8. The gripper jaws 187, 188 are carried by a shaft 185 which is fixed to a toggle link 189 pivoted to a lever 190 on a stud 177 and supports the end of a curved arm 186 also pivoted on the stud 177 ; the jaw 188 is fixed to the shaft 185, and the jaw 187 to a sleeve rotatably mounted thereon and carrying a toothed segment 183 gearing with a curved rack 182 on the long arm 176 of a bell-crank lever mounted on the stud 177 and actuated by a connecting-rod 174 and crank 173 from the shaft 26. Forming-mechanism. The presser die 15, which is formed with the spiral groove 16 to avoid excessive pressure being applied to the pasted margin of the blank, is rotatably mounted in a sleeve 12 pivoted at 13 in the machine frame ; the dies 8, 15 are geared together and driven from the main driving-shaft 3, and the die 15 is raised to separate the die to receive a blank delivered by the table, by a cam engaging a roller carried by the sleeve 12. The presser die is then again brought into contact with the forming die until the formation of the cup is completed when the dies are again separated and the cup ejected from the die 8. Ejecting and stacking mechanism. The completed cup on the die 8 is blown therefrom by a blast of air from a pipe 202 and is guided down a curved shoot 204 into a receiving-tube 205, Fig. 17, containing a cup holder supported on an arm 206 which is guided by a rod 209 and a cylinder 211 containing a counterweight connected to the arm by a cord 212. The cord passes over a wheel 213 which is rotated by a pawl on a pivoted bar 218 actuated from the machine so that as the cups are delivered to the cup holder the latter is progressively lowered. A pivoted shutter 207 may be swung across the shoot when it is desired to remove the cups from the tube 205, the completed cups being meanwhile stacked in the shoot which affords a long path to permit the glue to set before the cups enter the tube 205.
