Abstract

A gas burner 10 consists of a circular section combustion chamber 11 closed at its upstream end 12 and tapering at its downstream end to a discharge orifice 13, an inlet 14 being provided for supplying gaseous fuel, pressurized by a pump 16, tangentially into the combustion chamber 11, an inlet 17 also being provided for supplying air, pressurized by a pump 19, tangentially into the combustion chamber 11, and an ignitor 20 for igniting the fuel/air mixture. Such a burner 10 can be used in a water heater. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Pressurised gas burner This invention relates to a gas burnerand particularly, but not exclusively, to a gas burnerfor use with a water heating apparatus such as a boiler.
According to the present invention there is provided a gas burner comprising a circular section combustion chamberwhich at its outletend has an outlet orifice of less diameter than the remainder of the combustion chamber, meansforfeeding a gaseous fuel under pressure tangentially into the combustion chamber at its downstream end portion, meansforfeeding airunderpressuretangentially into the combustion chamber and an igniterfor igniting the fuel/air mixture.
An embodiment ofthe invention will now be described, by way of an example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure lisa longitudinal section through a gas burner according to the present invention; Figure2 is an end view taken in the direction ofthe arrow 2 indicated on Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a diagrammatic illustration of a gas fired water heater provided with a burner according to the present invention.
The gas burner is generally indicated at 10 and consists of a combustion chamber 11 which is of circular cross-section. The chamber 11 is closed at its upstream end by an end wall 12 and the chamber tapers at its downstream end to a discharge orifice 13. At its upstream end the combustion chamber 11 is provided with an inlet 14which is disposed tangentiallyofthecombustionchamberll andto which is connected a conduit 15 which receives gas under pressure from a pump 16 driven buy a motor 16a.The combustion chamber 11 is also provided with an inlet 17 which is disposed tangentially of the combustion chamber 11 and to which is connected a conduit 18which receives air under pressure from a pump 19 driven by a motor 19a. The combustion chamber 11 is also provided with an igniter 20 which is preferably a conventional spark-plug.
The gas and air swirl and mixwithinthe combustion chamber 11 and the mixture is burned within the combustion chamber 11. The products of combustion are discharged through the orifice 13.
The pressure within the combustion chamber 1 is high.
Figure 3 shows the burner 10 as fitted to a water heaterwhich consists of a heating tube 21 which communicates with a header 22 provided at one end of a watercontainer 23 through which extend a plurality of tubes 24 which communicate with an exhaust gas duct 25.
1. A gas burner comprising an annular combustion chamber closed at its upstream end and having at its downstream end an outlet orifice of less diameterthan the remainder ofthe combustion chamber, meansforsupplying a gaseous fluid under pressuretangentiallyintothecombustionchamber at its upstream end portion, means for supplying air under pressure tangentially into the combustion chambers and an ig n itor for igniting the fuel/air mixture.
2. Agas burner as claimed in claim 1, in which the combustion chamber at its downstream end portion tapers to the outlet orifice.
3. A gays burner as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, in which said means for supplying gaseous fuel includes a motor driven pump and the means for supplying air includes a motor driven pump.
4. A gas burner substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as illustrated intbe accompanying drawings.
5. Awater heating apparatus provided with a gas burner as claimed in any preceding claim.
6. Awater heating apparatus as claimed in claim 5, including a heating tube into which the burner extends.
