Abstract

The waterfall comprises a trough (1) having a front (3) with an overflow edge (3'). A sheet of material (6) e.g. of glass or plastics depends from the front (3') to a lower pool (7) thereby reducing splashing of the falling liquid. A gas supply (5) to a porous or perforated tube (4) aerates the liquid falling over the edge (3') thereby rendering it more visible and substantially reducing tapering of the falling liquid. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Waterfall The present invention relates to a waterfall.
An object of the invention is to provide a waterfall in which the splash created by liquid falling from one level to another is reduced, without impairing the waterfall effect.
The invention provides a waterfall comprising a trough for holding liquid and having an overflow edge, a sheet of material attachable to the overflow edge to depend therefrom so that liquid overflowing from the trough adheres to the sheet, and means four supplying gas to the overflow edge so that overflowing liquid is rendered more visible.
The sheet reduces splashing and the gas, e.g. air prevents the falling liquid from tapering su bstantially without having to increase the liquid flow unduly.
An embodiment ofthe invention will now be des cribed with reference to the accompanying drawing, wherein: Figure lisa side elevation of a waterfall in accordance with the invention, and Figure2 is a plan view ofthe waterfall of Figure 1.
As can be seen from Figure 1,an uppertrough 1, which may be of wood, metal, stone, simulated stones or any other suitable material, represents an upper level. The through 1 has awater inlet 2 and an outlet in the form of a front 3 having an overflow edge 3'. An aerating supply inside the trough 1 comprises an airstone or other porous plastics or perforated tube 4 connected to an airsupply via atube or pipe 5. The tu be 4is arranged adjacentthefront3 upstream thereof, and below the overflow edge 3'.
Outside the trough 1 and directly belowthe overflow edge 3', a substantially vertical sheet 6 extends from thetrough 1 to a lower liquid level 7 therebelow, so as to reduce splashing of water overflow ingfromthetrough 1.
The sheet 3 may be of glass, plastics or any other suitable material and is preferably transparent. If desired it may be coloured.
During operation, water is fed into the trough 1 via the inlet 2. The water passes around the tube4and is aerated before passing over the overflow edge 3'.
The water adheres to the surfaces of the sheet 6 and passes to the lower level with a reduced amount of splashing. Aeration substantially preventsthefalling waterfromtapering and makes it more visible, thereby enhancing the waterflow effect.
The waterfall described may be used to great effect in a garden, or as an indoor decorative feature.
1. Awaterfall comprising a trough for holding liquid and having an overflow edge, a sheet of material attachable to the overflow edge to depend therefrom so that liquid overflowing from the trough adheres to the sheet, and means for supplying gas to the overflow edge so that overflowing liquid is rendered more visible.
2. Awaterfall as claimed in claim 1, wherein the sheet of material is translucent.
3. Awaterfall as claimed in claim 2, wherein the sheet of material is of glass, plastics, stone or cement.
4. Awaterfall as claimed in any one ofthe preceding claims, wherein the trough is formed of wood, metal or plastics.
5. Awaterfall as claimed in any one of claims 1 to 3, wherein thetrough is formed of stone or simulated stone.
6. Awaterfall as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the means for supplying gas comprises a gas outlet atthe overflow edge in the form of a porous or perforated tube.
7. Awaterfall as claimed in claim 6, wherein the gas outlet tube is arranged adjacent the overflow edge and upstream thereof.
8. Awaterfall as claimed in claim 6, wherein the means for supplying gas comprises a pump.
9. Awaterfall as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, wherein the sheet of material is attached to the overflow edge and extends therefrom to the liquid surface level of a lower containerfor liquid.
10. Awaterfall as claimed in claim 8, wherein the sheet of material extends below the liquid surface level so as to reduce splashing of the liquid.
11. Awaterfall substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
