Abstract

A carpet display system has one or more fibre optic cables A extending through the pile of a carpet F from an adaptor member C passing through the back of the carpet, the adaptor member having means, such as a socket, for receiving a second fibre optic cable D leading to a light source E or sensor. Reflective material, such as lurex strands B, may surround the cables A and enhance the amount of light displayed. Optic cable D may be glued into plastic moulded member C which has a slivered coating causing light to illuminate fibre optic bundle A which is also glued into a rebate of member C. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION Fibre optic display system This invention relates to fi bre optic ca rpets.
Fibre optic carpets normally use an unbroken length of optic cable running from light source to carpet surface.
According to the present invention there is provided a component made offibre optic cables in a housing which penetrates through the carpetpileto allow a fibre optic cable from the light source to plug into it. There may be several optic cables arranged in a tuft held in the housing. There may be a reflective material employed to enhance the amount of light displayed.
Aclip may be used to secure the componenttothe carpet. One or more fibres may be used in the component. The component may be used to transmit ambient and otherlightto a remotesensor.
A specific em bodiment of th is invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which: Figure 1 represents a cross-section ofthe component.
Light fro source E is transmitted along optic cable Dwhich is plugged and glued into plastic mouldedcomponentCwhich has a silvered coating causing lightto illuminate fibre optic bundle Awhich is glued into a rebate in C. B represents an outer arrangement of lurex strands. Frepresentsthe carpet.
1. Acarpetdisplaysystem comprising afirstfibre optic cable extending within the pile of a carpet, and an adaptor member secured to the carpet at one end of said fibre optic cable, the adaptor member having meansforreceiving one end ofasecondfibre optic cable and being capable oftransferring light be tween the first and second fibre optic cables.
2. A carpet display system as claimed in Claim 1, whereinthefirstfibre optic cable is part of a bundle of fibre optic cables which emerge from the adaptor member.
3. Acarpetdisplaysystem as claimed in Claim 2, wherein the bundle of cables form a tuft.
4. Acarpetdisplaysystem as claimed in anyone ofthe preceding Claims, wherein the adaptor member has a socket for receiving the end of the second fibre optic cable.
5. A carpet display system as claimed in anyone ofthe preceding Claims, wherein the adaptor member extends through the back of the carpet.
6. A carpet display system as claimed in anyone of the preceding Claims, wherein the firstfibre optic cable is secured to the adaptor member.
7. Acarpetdisplaysystem as claimed in anyone ofthe preceding Claims, wherein the first fibre optic cable has its free end at the same level as the top of the pile ofthe carpet.
8. A carpet display system as claimed in anyone ofthe preceding Claims, wherein the firstfibre optic cable has around it light-reflective material.
9. A carpet display system as claimed in anyone ofthe preceding Claims, wherein the second fibre optic cable has its free end communicating with a light sensor.
10. A carpet display system as claimed in anyone of Claims 1 to 9, wherein the second fibre optic cable has its free end communicating with a lightsource.
11. A carpet display system substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to and as shown in the accompanying drawing.
