Abstract
In a speed limiter consisting of an electronic control circuit (2) and an electromechanical positioning assembly (4) which, through a coupling device (9, 10), regulates the fuel metering device (located in the fuel metering pump 35) of a motor vehicle, as the device for displaying the desired values to which the speed of the motor vehicle is to be limited, it is proposed to mount a further maximum speed pointer 21 coaxially with the speed pointer (20) of a speedometer or a journey recorder (11), which further pointer 21 is in geared connection 15 with a servo unit (12) which can be controlled by the manually settable 33 reference voltage transmitter (3) of the speed limiter, When the speed set by transmitter 3 is equalled by the actual speed measured by rotary transmitter 19, which also supplies the speed pointer 21, control circuit 2 controls the positioning assembly 4 which alters the fuel metering device to limit rise in vehicle speed, in an alternative arrangement the maximum speed pointer may be used selectively to indicate engine speed or to indicate the maximum set speed of the vehicle. A digital speed display may be mounted externally of on the vehicle. <IMAGE>
Description
SPECIFICATION
Speed limiter
The invention relates to a speed limiter with a positioning assembly in which there are essentially a positioning member which independently of an actuation of a pedal, acts on the fuel metering device of a mqtor vehicle, and a positioning motor which drives the positioning member, and with an electronic control circuit which permits of travel-dependent actuation of the positioning motor, and with a reference voltage transmitter associated with the electronic control circuit and operable from the dashboard of the motor vehicle and with a display device provided with a pointer.
A speed limiting system can be so conceived that the reference voltage transmitter, for example a potentiometer, not readily accessible directly or from outside, is associated with an electronic control circuit the purpose of which is to compute against a measured value, for example a voltage value, corresponding to the particular vehicle speed at the time, a reference voltage value corresponding to the limit speed, then delivering a signal for forward or reverse movement of the positioning motor when the calculated value exceeds or falls short of a fixed comparative value.
For such a concept which, to limit the speed of a motor vehicle, provides only one single desired limit value prescribed by law, for example, there is not per se any need to indicate this desired value. In general, though, this basic concept is expanded in that it for instance provides a switch disposed preferably in the dashboard of the relevant motor vehicle and by means of which a desired limit value, adjustable by a further potentiometer, can be selected. It is also possible to provide a plurality of switches by means of which, through an appropriate network of resistors, the relevant reference voltages can be applied to the comparator position of the electronic control circuit or a potentiometer may be provided in the dashboard and be adjustable to preferred speed values which are below the legally prescribed maximum desired limit value.Another known solution provides for a counter which can be advanced by an oscillator to be associated with the network of resistors. In this case, when the speed to which the motor vehicle is to be limited is reached, the oscillator is started by actuation of a switch and, once the relevant reference voltage determined by the resistance network has been selected by the counter, it is stopped when a limit signal appears.
In all these cases in which one or a plurality of additional limit speeds are selectable, then regardless of how selection takes place, it is not only advantageous but absolutely necessary for this important information, i.e. whichever desired value has been selected for the onset of any limiting of the motor vehicle speed, to be displayed. As DE-OS 28 36 342 shows, such a display can be effected by associating illuminating elements with the selectable desired limit speed values or by using suitable instruments to provide an analogue or digital display.
Having regard to practical operating conditions, preference must be given to the analogue display because due to the movement of a pointer, it is much easier for the driver to be made aware on the one hand of the fact that the motor vehicle has to be limited to a specific speed and on the other have his attention drawn to any variation in the desired limit value than if he were to refer to a constant or suddenly carying digital display. Having his attention drawn to a preset desired limit value is advantageous, for example, when starting a journey, particularly when there has been a change of driver, during display of a variation in desired limit value and regardless of the selection thereof, for example in a kickdown situation in which there is automatically a switch over to the maximum desired limit value and after some time a drop down to the lower adjusted desired value.Furthermore, the movement of the pointer constitutes an understandable and easily recognisable monitoring of the function of the speed limiter, at least with regard to the setting of the desired limit value.
However, apart from the fact that a separate pointer-type instrument would be relatively -expensive for the intended purpose and would additionally and adversely affect the acceptance of a speed limiter, the instrumentation of a motor vehicle is on the one hand already sufficiently extensive and on the other the instruments on the dashboard of a utility motor vehicle are substantially harmonious in their location in respect of one another so that subsequent additions are generally impossible.
In addition, there is the fact that the driver's attention should be on what is happening in the road traffic and should not be adversely affected by a plurality of individual displays which can only be scanned with difficulty while the vehicle is moving.
The problem on which the present invention is based was therefore to provide for the speed limiter a display device which comprises a pointer, which is in the field of view of the driver and which can be fitted with a minimum of cost and bother.
The solution of this problem provides basically for a pointer mounted coaxially of the speed indicator of the speed measuring instrument and to co-operate with the speed scale of a speed measuring instrument associated with the motor vehicle, the pointer being operatively connected by a gear transmission to a servo unit which can be controlled by the reference voltage transmitter.
The preferred embodiment of the invention is characterised in that means provided for displaying the engine speeds in a travel recorder serve as the display device.
The invention which provides a pointer adapted to be moved by a servo unit and which in co-operation with a speed scale indicates the desired value at which the speed is to be limited resolves the problem posed in a surprisingly simple way and in that the special construction as a display instrument for the desired limit values, a travel recorder which it is compulsory in any case to fit in specific motor vehicles, offers the additional advantage that the engine speed display means provided in travel recorders are either used exclusively for the intended purpose or assume a dual function.
It is intended hereinafter to explain the invention in greater detail with reference to the attached drawings, in which:
Fig. 1 is a diagrammatic view of a preferred speed limiting system, and
Fig. 2 is a likewise diagrammatically shown alternative embodiment.
According to the diagrammatic view in Fig.
1, the components of the speed limiting system according to the invention are a regulating assembly 1 comprising an electronic control circuit 2 and associated with this a reference voltage transmitter 3, an electromechanical positioning assembly 4 fixed on the vehicle chassis in a suitable manner, a mechanical coupling device incorporated into the throttle linkage 7, 8 which transmits the travel of the accelerator 5 and which is subject to the action of a return spring 6, the coupling device being, for example, an adjusting cylinder 10 operable for example by means of a Bowden cable 9, or a push-pull cable, and a travel recorder 11 which is generally disposed in the field of view of the driver on the dashboard of therelevant motor vehicle.
The journey recorder 11 which serves as a display instrument for the speed limiter is equipped with a servo unit 12 which in per se conventional manner comprises a potentiometer 16 which serves as a position transmitter, a gear mechanism 15 and a control circuit
14 associated with the positioning motor 13.
By means of adjustable resistors 17 and 18 associated with the potentiometer 16 it is possible to adapt the characteristic curve of the display device for the desired limit values to the characteristic curve of the speed measuring system of the journey recorder 11. Expediently, the suitably encapsulated regulating assembly 1 is installed in a protected place in the driver's cab. It is however also conceivable to integrate the control circuit 2 and the reference voltage transmitter 3 in the journey recorder 11 or to dispose them in a shielded part of the positioning assembly 4.
The journey recorder 11 itself, the purpose of which is well known to be that of displaying at least the speed travelled and the total distance covered by the relevant motor vehicle and to record in a visually legible manner both vehicle related data such as speeds, distances and consumptions, and also driver related data, i.e. working time data, has its input side connected to a rotary value transmitter 19 and comprises in addition to the pointer 20 which serves to indicate the speed, a further coaxially mounted pointer 21 which is connected through a gear mechanism to the positioning motor 13 and by which the desired limit values can be indicated in conjunction with the speed scale 22.
For the sake of completeness, it should also be mentioned that reference numeral 23 denotes a distance-travelled counter, 24 and 25 are knobs for adjusting the working time recorder, 26 and 27 are illuminated elements on the one hand for monitoring the recording function and on the other the limiter function while reference numeral 28 designates time display means on the journey recorder 11. A lock 29 serves, as is well known, to lock the cover 30 which is constructed to be opened up for changing the diagram charts used as recording carriers in the journey recorder 11.
Fig. 1 also shows that the electronic control circuit 2, too, which has an input stage for pulse preparation, means of comparing desired and actual values, and a controlling circuit for the positioning motor 31 which is in the positioning assembly 4, is linked to the rotary value transmitter 19. As already mentioned at the outset, the electronic control circuit 2 compares the constantly ascertained speed values with a reference value rigidly adjusted by a potentiometer 32 or preselected by means of a switch 33 located preferably on the instrument panel of the motor vehicle in question, delivering to the positioning motor 31 by not later than when the desired limit value set is exceeded, a signal aimed at throttling the vehicle engine 34 by movement of a fuel metering device located in the injection pump 35 associated with the vehicle engine 34. A further switch 36 is associated with the vehicle clutch and serves for briefly allowing the passage of fuel for the gear shift operation in the case of non-synchromesh gearboxes.
The potentiometer 32 delivers a reference voltage which corresponds to the maximum admissible speed while it is possible to use the switch 33 to set desired limit values which lie between the maximum speed and a minimum speed ascertained from traffic safety considerations. The relevant reference voltages are applied via line connections not designated in greater detail both to the electronic control circuit 2 and also to the control circuit 14 of the servo unit 12. As Fig. 1 shows, they can also be used, via a decoding circuit 37, to control an additionally provided digital display device 38 mounted, for example, at the back of the motor vehicle in question.
Preferably, the display of the desired limit values is so organised that when the motor vehicle is stationary and the engine is switched off whichever was the most recently selected desired limit value remains displayed, renewed starting of the engine automatically resulting in adjustment of the maximum desired limit value which is then indicated so that the driver, particularly after there has been a change of driver, is not from the outset restricted in the configuration of his journey. By moving the pointer 21 which can by means of the gear mechanism 15 be designed for full visual effect, it is possible on the one hand for this operation and on the other, by the driver actuating the switch 33, for example while the vehicle is travelling, to fix a desired limit speed which is below the admissible maximum speed.
In the case of the alternative embodiment shown in Fig. 2, the journey recorder 11 is in addition to the speed measuring system, equipped with a rotary speed measuring system with which a rotary value transmitter 39 is associated. The embodiment shown in Fig.
1 has a pointer 21 provided exclusively for indicating the desired speed limit values but in this alternative embodiment is has a dual function in that, together with a compressed and selected rotary speed scale 40, it serves to indicate the rotary speeds of the engine. For example, if it is intended to display a desired limit value set in the manner described and by means of the switch 33, then a push-button switch 41 is actuated so that the engine speed display is interrupted and the corresponding reference voltage value is passed through a voltage frequency converter 42 to the servo unit of the engine speed measuring system. When the push-button switch 41 is released, the pointer 21 again runs back into the engine display zone.
The engine speed measuring system of a journey recorder can, if it is possible to dispense with engine speed display, naturally also serve to indicate solely the desired speed limit values. It is equally conceivable just to equip a tachometer with the display device according to the invention.
