Abstract

218,240. Compagnie GÚnÚrale de Basalte, C. G. B. June 29, 1923, [Convention date]. Void [Published Sect. 91 of the Act]. Tilting reverberatory furnaces; charging; hearths. - A furnace, particularly intended for melting basalt, is supported on trunnions 2 at its centre of gravity so that it may be easily tipped for running off the molten material. The hearth is divided into three parts, the part 6 adjacent the charging end being forwardly inclined, the oentral part 7 rearwardly inclined, and the part 8 adjacent the tap hole 12 also rearwardly inclined but at a greater angle than that of the part 7. Preferably the parts 7 and 8 are separated by a sill 11 the top of which is slightly below the tap hole when the furnace is in normal position. The furnace is heated by gas or oil burners in the side walls, the burners being staggered so that no flame can play direct on an opposite burner. The charging hopper 9 is connected to the furnace by a shoot 10 pivoted at 30 so that it may be swung out of the way when desired. The waste gases leave the furnace by a conduit 25 provided with an arc shaped shield 26 co-operating with the end of a fixed conduit 27 opening into the hopper so that the material therein is preheated. For treating powdered basalt, heating tubes may be arranged in the hopper to separate the material from the gases.
