Abstract

A clutch take-up indicator comprises three switches 14, 15,20 which are activated by a rod 16 attached to the gear lever 17 and an adjustable roller 23 attached to the clutch pedel 25. A light 21 comes on when the biting point is reached warning the driver to hold his clutch pedal steady. It enables the driver to ensure whether he has selected first or reverse gear because it will not come on if any other gear is selected. <IMAGE>

Description

SPECIFICATION A biting point indicator for a motor vehicle This invention relates to a biting point indicator for a motor vehicle with a manual transmission.
Anybody learning to drive a motor vehicle with a manual transmission has to put up with the problem of moving off smoothly without stalling the engine or starting up hill without rolling backward. One has difficulty in identifying the biting point. The biting point is the stage when the two plates of the clutch are touching each other and the vehicle is about to move. The driver at this stage has to hold the clutch pedal steady and release it progressively when the vehicle moves off, identifying the biting point becomes easier with practice.
According to the present invention there is provided a light on the dashboard which comes on when the biting point is reached. It comprises of a bulb attached to a wire. The wire is connected to the power supply which is controlled by three switches, depending on the gears layout of the vehicle. In this Figure, three switches are illustrated. Two switches are fixed at the base of the gear lever. They are operated by a rod attached to the base of the gear lever. The rod is shaped and attached in such a way that it only activates a switch when either first or reverse gear is selected. The third switch, the position of which is adjustable, is fitted on a bracket which is fitted to the vehicle's chassis. The switch is fitted in such a way that the top protrudes towards the clutch pedal. On the clutch pedal a roller is mounted, the position of which is adjustable. The roller travels up and down the bracket pressing the switch's top on and off in the process. The roller is fixed at such a point that when it presses on the switch's top, the biting point is reached and the light comes on.
The driver is aware that the biting point is reached and he has to hold the clutch pedal steady and release it progressively, the light also helps him to ensure that he has selected either the first or the reverse gear because it will not come on if any other gear is selected.
With this device the driver can reach the biting point without practice or guessing.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of Example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective the biting point indicator in operation.
Power supply 10 from vehicle to which a Yshape connection 11 is made. Two wires 12 and 13 are connected to the Y-shape connection 11. The wires 12 and 13 are connected to switches 14 and 15. Switches 14 and 15 are activated by the rod 16 attached to the gear lever 17. Same wires 12 and 13 running from switches 14 and 15 are connected to a Y-shape connection 18. The Y-shape connection 18 is joined to a wire 19 which in turn is connected to switch 20 and a light bulb 21 on the dashboard 24. Switch 20 is mounted on a bracket 22 which is fitted to the vehicle's chassis. The top of switch 20 protrudes through bracket 22 towards the clutch pedal 25. Roller 23 is fitted to clutch pedal 25 in such a way that it travels up and down bracket 22, when the clutch pedal 25 is operated, pressing the switch's 20 top in the process.Roller 23 is fitted at such a point on the clutch pedal 25 that when biting point is reached, the roller 23 must be pressing against switch's 20 top and the light 21 on the dashboard 24 is lit up, thus the driver knows when he has reached the biting point.
1. A biting point indicator comprising of a light bulb attached to a vehicle's power supply and operated by three switches, two of which are operated by a rod attached to the gear lever, and the third one operated by a roller attached to the clutch pedal in such a way that the bulb is lit when biting point is reached.
2. A biting point indicator as in claim 1 which enables a driver to move off without stalling or rolling backward when moving up hill.
3. A biting point indicator as in Claim 1 which enables the driver to ensure that he has selected either first or reverse gear because the light will not come on if any other gear is selected.
