Fluid-actuated valves for automatic air supply for use in the primary air supply to gas producers and to the the secondary air supply for burning the producer gas in retort settings &c. as described in Specification 18705/12. The shape and position of the counter-balance arm are accurately determined. The vane A is pivoted on a rod B mounted in the flue box D and adjustable by a collar J to vary the angle between the vane and the arm which carries a weight L sliding over a scale N. The flue D<1> leads to a chimney V through dampers T and is provided with an anenometer R window S and vacuum gauge P. After deciding upon certain limits of pressure in the flue D<1> the weight L, is chosen so that with the weight at the extreme end of the arm the regulator is open wide at the lower pressure with a wide angle, say 120‹, between the vane and the arm. The angular position of the arm is now reduced say to 60‹ and the dampers adjusted until first the lower pressure is indicated and then the higher pressure the difference in the reading- of the anemometer being noted. At each angular position a position Z for the weight is found such that the weight ensures the same rate of air flow between the limits of pressure in the flue. These points Z are plotted on a scale (Fig. 4) and the line joining them denotes the curve in which the rod is to be bent and the point a at which it must be attached to the vane.
